Fantasy TV Series To Look Out For

I have always been a fan of fantasy novels. Some say that these stories are for children, but as the great C.S. Lewis said, “A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.” Today, “children’s stories” and fantasy novels have reached such a state that they are being made into movies and TV series. In the past months, I have been watching almost nothing but these shows.

It saddens me that there seems to be a dearth of fantasy TV series. We had the Legend of the Seeker, which isn’t really a favorite of mine; but it was still something! You’ve probably heard of the cancellation of the series by now – a real disappointment to Terry Goodkind fans out there.

Still, there are a couple of series to look out for. I have just finished watching the second season of Merlin, and yes, I have been Merlinized. Never mind that the plot is quite different on many points from the popular version of the legend. The TV show itself is something to behold. The third season should start sometime soon.

Here’s the clincher: The Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin are being made into TV shows as well! The news is that the first book, The Game of Thrones, is already being filmed for HBO. While initial reports say that the pilot would be aired in March of this year, more recent updates tell us that it will not be till 2011. No matter, at least there is something to look forward to.

Any other fantasy TV shows you can recommend?

    Try some of these:
Warehouse 13 it’s kind of hoaky but i gets addicting and it’s funny!
Fringe is pretty amazing. A little on the conspiracy side of things.
Doctor Who is a definite must. Start with the 2005 revival.
Haven starts out kind of hoaky but it gets good. Give it a couple episodes before judging.
Supernatural is pretty good if you like having the pants scared off you every once in a while, most of the episodes are just dang funny though.
Vampire Diaries If you like vampires and you like lots of drama soap opera-y-ness it’s good if you don’t like either one of those things I wouldn’t suggest trying this one.
Sanctuary This show is my ultimate favorite. The first season is a bit tedious but after that it’s just awesome! I’m telling you people if you like fantasy at all this show will BLOW YOUR MIND! Yes in case you’re wondering I am a huge geek when it comes to fantasy or sci-fi.

Camelot will be coming to Starz in 2011. Also, does anyone remember the short lived series Roar? It starred Heath Ledger and only lasted one season in 1997.

Game of Thrones is out and it sticks quite closely to its novel’s story. It’s already got a second season and I would definitely recommend it!
