Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty Limited Edition Box is worth your $100

collectors ed starcraft 2 540x574 Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty Limited Edition Box is worth your $100

It’s about twice as expensive as the more engaging limited edition sets. Perhaps the last limited ed box set I bought was that from Warhammer Online, which set me back by around USD $20 more than the regular retail set. The thing with limited edition boxes is that gaming companies have been known to insert nothing more than the wastage of whatever happens in the perimeter of game development — mostly in the form of concept art compiled into a nice bound book. At least Warhammer came with a figurine and a prologue comic series.

Starcraft II Wings of Liberty is expensive. But it will be well worth your while. Ars Technica breaks it down for us:

  • The Art of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, a 176-page book featuring artwork from the game
  • An exclusive 2GB USB flash drive replica of Jim Raynor’s dog tag, which comes preloaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War(R) expansion set
  • A behind-the-scenes DVD containing over an hour of developer interviews, cinematics with director’s commentary, and more
  • The official StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty soundtrack CD, containing 14 epic tracks from the game along with exclusive bonus tracks
  • StarCraft comic book issue #0, a prequel to the comic series
  • A World of Warcraft(R) mini Thor in-game pet that can be applied to all World of Warcraft characters on a single Battle.net account
  • Exclusive Battle.net downloadable content, including special portraits for your Battle.net profile, decals to customize your units in-game, and a visually unique version of the terran Thor unit

You get so much more than just concept art. The extra $50 USD is well spent on a World of Warcraft pet (which you can probably sell to other gamers) and nobody can say no to another thematic 2GB USB drive. If you’ve played the beta, you’ll definitely want the Firefly-inspired soundtrack.

And the box. Just look at it. It is just so beautiful. No preorder date yet, kids.
