Cupcakes of Catan

Cupcakes of Catan

Ever heard of the German board game Settlers of Catan? You know, the game that Wired called the “Monopoly killer,” aka the most perfect board game of all time? It’s a fiendishly clever, deceptively simple game based around the idea of trading natural resources. Hexagonal cardboard tiles are used instead of one set board, so the playing surface changes every time you play. The play area in question is an island, where the story goes that you and your opponents are basically trying to take over, owning more territory, resources, and property than anyone else. The object is to score points, which are based on the number of resources you Read more »

Lego Meets Bugatti Veyron 16.4, Delivers Complex Components

Lego Meets Bugatti Veyron 16.4, Delivers Complex Components

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grandsport is one of the most beautifully designed cars on the market and now you can own your very own for a fraction of the cost! Just beware, it’s made out of Lego and it’s only a 1:8 scale, but at least it does have working parts. The creation features a working sequential gearbox with 7+R speeds, offers a convertible top, and comes equipped with fully functioning progressive brakes, retractile spoiler and flap and a handbrake. All of those features are controlled by a single remote control. The video below shows the Bugatti Lego creation in action, notice the end of the video in which the Read more »

Red Gate: Next Best Thing To Google?

Red Gate: Next Best Thing To Google?

As the general public is not that aware of this tech company, I hardly think that we can compare Red Gate to Google in this aspect. However, Red Gate has come to the forefront with an interesting move to attract talent to their flock: they’re offering people iPad units just for them to show up at interviews. Yes, you read that right – just show up for the interview, and you can take home an iPad for FREE. Co-founder Simon Galbraith justifies this seemingly excessive gesture by emphasizing the fact that there is a “talent” war in Cambridge, where the company is based. He says that the only thing that’s Read more »

Man as Industrial Palace

In 1926 Dr. Fritz Kahn created a poster of the human bodily functions, Man as Industrial Palace, based on mechanics. Dr. Kahn was famous for using mechanics metaphors to explain the workings of the human body. Dr. Fritz Kahn (1888-1968) was a gynecologist in Berlin and a world-famous popular science writer who illustrated the form and function of the human body with spectacular, modern man-machine analogies. In the 1920s, his magnum opus, “Das Leben des Menschen” (The Life of Man) – a five-volume series – was renowned as a German accomplishment of global repute. In the 1930s, his books were banned and burned by the Nazis, then edited by Kahn’s Read more »

The Hoverboard is real, at last

The Hoverboard is real, at last

We’re just five years away from the future, you know. Flying cars, tennis shoes that tie themselves, and hoverboards are just around the corner. That’s what we have to look forward to in 2015, according to Back to the Future Part II. Now, at long last, at least one of those things has become reality. Well, sort of. The Hoverboard has been recreated by a French artist named Nils Guadagnin, who designed this replica for an exhibition of Back to the Future-related art pieces. It really hovers, too, though not at the strength necessary to suspend a human being in mid-air. It uses electromagnets to levitate off the surface of Read more »

The Day Andy Exploded

The Day Andy Exploded

Do you know who Andy is? I am pretty sure you can name a few Andys in your life, but for the true blue Android geek, there is but one Andy: that little green robot. Andy, Google’s Android mascot has become precious to many an Android-loving person. Gary Booth, who I suppose is one of them, just came out with an Exploded Andy shirt, which I think will enthrall a lot of geeks out there. True, the idea of Andy exploding may not seem nice at first, but once you take a look at the shirt, I am pretty sure that you will want to get your hands on one. Read more »

Captain Britain is an Avenger! Finally!

Captain Britain is an Avenger! Finally!

I cannot tell you how happy this makes me. Age Of Heroes #1 this week had a short story starring Captain Britain and M.I.13 (a very much missed title by this Marvelite), with a small but fascinating battle of wills between Pete Wisdom and Captain America. Of course, the Captain won, maybe Pete has softened over the years.  On the spur of the moment during a ceremony recognising relations between the new security administration in the States and the forces of the UK, Steve Rogers suddenly offered Brian Braddock membership of the Avengers. Pete immediately saw the Americans stealing away British talent, but surely, what a coup for Britain! Definitely Read more »
