Today the World Cup kicked off in South Africa, while writing this Uruguay vs. France is on T.V. and I also caught the second half of South Africa vs. Mexico. A week ago I was mulling over the question of how many Forever Geekers are into soccer? I for one don’t watch soccer unless it’s the Euro Cup or the World Cup.
Well according to Adidas latest commercial there are a lot of geeks into soccer. The video Star Wars Cantina 2010 features Han Solo, C-3PO and R2-D2 among Star Wars characters and some more present day guests like David Beckham, Daft Punk and Snoop Dogg to name a few. They are all in some bar for a world cup match viewing party when things get a bit out of hand.
Star Wars fans are sure to appreciate this remix commercial, I found it very clever done. And Beckham is not the first player not attending the World Cup that I have seen in a recent commercial. Seems like some of them are making some nice cash from an unfortunate situation. Ruud van Nistelrooy the Dutch striker has been passed over for the team selection but L’oreal still thinks he’s the right man for their current commercial.

And for the readers that are really into the World Cup you should check out New York Times “The Evolution of the World Cup Ball”. A photograph essay of all twenty balls used in each World Cup with details of the built and maker of each ball.
