Life-sized Optimus Prime looms over Beijing

Life-sized Optimus Prime looms over Beijing

More than meets the eye? Well, kinda. Standing forty feet tall and weighing six tons, this facsimile of Optimus Prime as seen in Michael Bay’s recent live-action movies has been built in Beijing‘s Green Dream Park, just outside of the “Bird’s Nest” stadium used in the 2008 Olympics (the stadium can be seen in the picture above, in the haze behind the robot). The construction (it took all my will power just now not to type “constructicon”) stands as a monument to environmentalism and recycling, since it was built out of spare car parts, which took five truckloads to cart to the environmentally-themed park. The park is also reportedly home to Read more »

The Art Of The Brick – 18 Amazing Lego Creations In One Exhibit [Pics]

The Art Of The Brick is an art exhibit by Nathan Sawaya, but it’s not your typical sculpting, painting and pottery type of show, instead Sawaya has made all of his creations using only Lego. From a monopoly board to a man who’s spilling his guts, quite literally, the exhibit offers some of the coolest Lego creations I’ve seen in a while. Click on the Lego creations below to see full sized images of each piece: Read more »

Comic Con looms

Comic Con looms

The biggest event of the year in the comics social calendar is peeking over the horizon. And no that’s not as oxymoronic as it sounds, comics are are cool now, right? Right? The boards are already abuzz with talk of Cosmic/Galactic/Space Avengers, the teaser images of the return of the Black Lanterns (waaaaaaaaaay too soon if you ask me, if that’s even real and not just a Halloween cover) and in the process missing some really cool news. No, not that Mark Waid has been announced as Chief Creative Officer at Boom!, (although that is pretty cool in and of itself), but that the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents are finally making their Read more »

Cap & Thor images straight from Comic-Con

Marvel has released some new imagery from the Thor and Captain America movies in honor of Comic-Con 2010, which is just about to get underway in San Diego. Check out these awesome pieces of concept art, along with a jaw-dropping new still image of Chris Hemsworth as Thor from USA Today (you won’t believe the size of Hemsworth’s arms!). Oh how I hope that the movies can live up to these images… Read more »

What Do You Think of Olivia Munn?

What Do You Think of Olivia Munn?

This “geek goddess” (that’s what Guyism calls her) has been making a lot of noise lately. For sure, you’ve heard about Olivia Munn’s exploits, which have placed her in the limelight more than usual. She rose to fame courtesy of G4’s Attack of the Show but has since then moved on to more lucrative gigs. From being dubbed as Jon Stewart’s “senior Asian correspondent” to roaming Comic Con grounds dressed as Princess Leia to writing and promoting her own personal essays – it looks like Olivia Munn has gained a wide following. She can also be seen regularly on Perfect Couples. But it doesn’t end there – not quite. Read more »

9 Cool Calvin and Hobbes tattoos

9 Cool Calvin and Hobbes tattoos

Calvin and Hobbes is the most anti commercial comic strip that I know of. Its creator Bill Watterson stopped with the strip in 1995 after 10 years of creating a daily comic strip of Calvin and Hobbes. He has withdrawn from public eye and never gives an interview. He has been called the J.D. Salinger of the comic strip world. I don’t know of you but when I started reading the newspaper as a kid I started with the comics section which included syndicated strips of Calvin and Hobbes. I must say that I only cared for Calvin and Hobbes, non of the others, which explains why I don’t remember Read more »

$50 For Your Own Avatar Via FaceTime

$50 For Your Own Avatar Via FaceTime

First thought: no thanks!  Why would I want to pay someone $50 to create a caricature of myself?  Then again, judging from the demand of the service, this thing just might be pretty cool (depending on your definition of cool). David Lanham of Icon Factory has launched a career on the side – thanks to a broken leg.  The story is that he was put out of action for a while so he had to stay at home.  What happened was that he found some idle time on his hands and started playing with his iPhone. The result? A lucrative business on the side. David Lanham is now creating customized Read more »

How can a car dealership seal the deal on more car sales? If your Chevrolet UK you simply provide your salespeople with the roadmap for the “perfect” handshake and then release them on the world. Creation Of A Jedi Masterpiece [Time Lapse Painting]

Creation Of A Jedi Masterpiece [Time Lapse Painting]

Robert Burden has not only painted an amazingly awesome 10-foot tall painting of Luke and his Tauntaun from Star Wars, he’s made a time-lapse video of his creation to show the entire delicate process he used to create the geeky artwork (in the styling of an old tapestry). To gain a full appreciation for his work you really need to watch the video: Read more »
