Normally it wouldn’t take 14 years for a popular British TV movie to find it’s way stateside, but that’s exactly what happened with the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie on DVD when a rights dispute occurred between BBC, Fox and Universal Pictures, a rights battle that has finally come to an end.

The TV movie stars Paul McGann as the 8th doctor, a performance that is considered decent by even some of the most hardcore Doctor Who fans.

The DVD according to ToplessRobot will arrive in the next 12 months and there is word that it may even contain more “special edition” features than are currently available on the UK version of the TV movie.

In the meantime, I’ve heard some people mention that they still have the VHS copy of the first release, perhaps they can finally part with that old VHS player once they have the movie in all it’s digital glory.

Have you watched the TV movie? If so what do you think about the 8th Doctor? I personally am happy to see this version of the series for the first time in about a decade, I honestly have forgotten what I thought about it and I LOVE the show.

The Doctor is fine but the movie sucks.

The story wasn’t as high as the standard of most Dr Who stories, but the character of the Doctor was spot on. Considering that the last bit of Dr Who we’d seen was seven years earlier, it showed promise at the time, but it’s nowhere near as good as the show’s been since 2005.

Personally, I’d like to see the 8th Doctor come back for a once off, even as a flashback explaining his role in the Time Wars, or for his regeneration scene to Christopher Eccleston’s character.

Agreed with both of you, I was thinking about that when writing this piece. 8th Doctor = Great, Movie = Definitely Made For TV.

  4. Jingles says:

    Agreed. Doctor = Good, Movie = Meh…

The first 4 Doctors were my fav Doc’s. But Tom Baker was the best Doctor there ever was or will be.
