Monday night proved to be a novel – and interesting – experience for me. I had been hearing about GeekFight! Trivia Night here in Manila for some time now, but I hadn’t really had the time to go to a single event till this week.
GeekFight! Trivia Night is all about a group of people with their own personal “obsessions” getting together and slugging it out – using their mental muscles of course. The series of events was founded by Paolo Cruz, who also serves as the quiz master.
When we got there, the event hadn’t started, and the atmosphere was quite laid back. It was a classic case of the world being small, too. My friend and I saw people we hadn’t seen in a while – and they were competing! (I guess that says something about the people in my circle.)
So what happens at GeekFight!? Well, anyone who thinks he can hold his own can form groups of at least four people. On the night itself, the quiz master presents the questions, which are grouped into categories – basically what you will see in most other trivia contests. You need to pay a small joining fee, and if you win, you get some swag. (I hear they’re getting a really cool sponsor soon, so the stakes are going to step up a notch.)
Just imagine a roomful of geeks – of all kinds – enjoying their favorite alcohol and wanting to prove that they know more than everyone else. That’s the kind of night that we were in for. I didn’t dare join the fray, but when the identity of the mitochondrial Eve in BSG was brought up, I had to stop myself from raising my hand and giving the answer (which of course was totally unacceptable). Of course, there was the occasional dispute (or not-so-occasional) when a team didn’t agree with the “correct” answer. These moments were the most interesting parts of the night, in my opinion. Hearing varying points of view and the arguments provided in their defense never fails to perk me up.
If you’re based here, and you find yourself looking for something to do on a Monday night, check out their Facebook page. Heck, why don’t we form a team and have some fun? For our readers from other parts of the world, do you have similar events in your neighborhood? Would you join GeekFight! if you had the chance?
Here’s my piece of trivia for you.

And don’t forget for those geeks based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Geeks VS Geeks provides the same trivia trickery. It’s the US export of GeekFight!
