Of Eyeglasses, Geeks, and Nerds

glasses Of Eyeglasses, Geeks, and Nerds“When it comes to eyeglasses, it’s cool to look like a nerd.”

What say you? I have had to wear glasses since I was in third grade, so I don’t really know about glasses looking cool. (Yeah, talk about looking cool to a 9-year-old who had to wear humongous pink glasses. Oh, and yes, I hated pink.)

If we are going to go with the stereotype, though, eyeglasses are indeed usually associated with the nerdy type. For some reason, eyeglasses seem to be the “in” thing. It follows that looking like a nerd is cool now?

Before fashionistas start hating on me, let me clarify – the frames have to be of a certain style. They have to be big – no, oversized – plastic frames. Don’t take my word for it – I only know about functional eyeglasses and not fashionable ones. An article at Chron is to blame for this post – read how it says that nerd glasses make you look cool.

It got me thinking about whether or not nerds and geeks who wear eyeglasses put a lot of thought into these accessories. I know for one that I would rather get LASIK, but I have to settle for contact lenses. I wouldn’t mind wearing a pair of silver-framed glasses much like the one a 6 wore in BSG (the one who set off a nuke in Cloud Nine).

So here are my questions:

  1. If you wear eyeglasses and you consider yourself a geek/nerd, do you gravitate towards the chunky librarian-type styles?
  2. If you don’t consider yourself a geek/nerd but wear glasses anyway, do the geek-styled glasses catch your attention?
  3. Do certain frame styles really make one look like a nerd?
  4. Does it really matter???

  1. I have multiple pictures of me as a kid wearing NHS chunky-style glasses. And I despair every time I see hipster-types around me wearing chunky ones. Total victims of fashion, and nothing else.

  2. I started wearing glasses at 14 and was allowed to choose my own frames. Never liked the ‘old-fashioned’ metal frames with the rubber nose holder. When full ‘plastic’ glasses became popular I got a cool red one and since then only wear ‘plastic’ frames.

I have had two red, one green, one purple and now my favorite one since the first red glasses a black one with some chrome on the sides. they are not chunky, just your regular light black frames.

Although I must say I do give in in getting brand glasses, Gucci, Fendi and now Dior. But on the other hand I wear the same glasses every day for more then a year.

I also wore glasses as a kid, with the large, plastic and in my case, pink and blue frames. Yuck. I don’t see why anyone would want to wear those.

I went through a long period of wearing the half-frame ones, with them getting smaller each time I got a new pair.

Then, at my husband’s suggestion, I looked into the cat eye frames, only in a lighter color than black because black looks awful on me. I love my current frames, cat eye shaped, but not to pointed at the outer ends, dark red in front and light blue near my face.

I think you need to feel good in your glasses or you will not feel good in general, and that everyone looks different in different styles. My geek husband continues to wear half-frame glasses and looks great. I feel like there are very few people that oversized frames look good on.

If you are wearing glasses as a trend, or a certain style due to trends, I think that’s a bit nuts. If you are a real geek, you most certainly don’t follow trends though (isn’t that part of the definition, we do things that are out of style!), so it shouldn’t matter.

funny how this was to show up while i was pondering the inclusion of glasses on the main in bayonetta. Not that i think anything other then surgical attachment would hold them in place during the moves she performs.

I don’t dig fashion or wearing glasses to be fashionable, I wear what I like not what is in fashion. I also wear glasses because I have to, I’m short sighted, anything more than a few meters away starts getting bury.

I’m also a geek (I’m an IT technician) so I guess I fit into the stereo type. But simply because you wear glasses doesn’t make you smarter or a nerd/geek, tho it makes you look smarter, if you are dumb then keep your mouth shut ;) I know some people that look super hot in glasses and they are not the stereotypical geek/nerd.

I like the look of glasses, I have black Dolce & Gabbana glasses that my sister say makes me look like a sleek geek. They are not the big chunky style. Kinda like Gordon Freeman’s glasses. They look good and I like them and best of all they help me see things further away!
