Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v 10

Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v 10

Welcome to this, our tenth installment of Wins and Fails This Week in Geek, just in time for the holidays. So happy “ho ho ho” and bowls full of jelly and all that stuff to you & yours in the coming days! It’s been yet another eventful week filled with the wrath of geeks (and just about everyone else), early Christmas presents for the nostalgic among us, and dangerous stunts gone awry. Let’s hurry into the fray. WIN: BYTE For old timers with a love of computing magazines, BYTE was the pinnacle of computer tech publications. It was universally mourned upon its death some dozen years ago, but in what’s Read more »

Harmonix Goes It Alone

Harmonix Goes It Alone

Following reports last month that Viacom was looking to offload Rock Band developer Harmonix, today Harmonix’ PR guy John Drake posted a note on the Rock Band forums announcing the news: instead of being sold to another big publisher like EA or Sony, the Harmonix team has bought the company themselves. Harmonix is now officially an independent, privately-owned studio. An investment company named Columbus Nova provided much of the capitol that Harmonix needed to buy the company from Viacom. As a result, there is now a new company called “Harmonix-SBE Holdings LLC.” What does all this mean for you? If you’re a Rock Band or Dance Central player, fear not. Read more »

World’s Tiniest Periodic Table

World’s Tiniest Periodic Table

Periodic tables always get us all excited. Never mind all those deals for Christmas (well, not really) – what else can you want for the holidays if you have the world’s teeniest periodic table? Nanoscientists – not your regular-sized scientists – have decided to play around with a strand of human hair and etched the entire period table of elements on it. Impossible? Of course not! Watch the video, which they have created, for proof. (Now you didn’t think that these great minds would have overlooked the evidence, did you?) Read more »

How Do You Geek?

How Do You Geek?

These days it seems people never shut up about “geek chic” (thank you, hipsters) and just what it is about geeks that makes us what we are, versus those who merely emulate our “style”. I myself am guilty of discussing this a couple weeks ago right here, but as an offshoot, while writing that post, I began to formulate a question. Multiple sources that discuss the difference between hipsters and geeks refer to geeks as merely people who are passionate about something. So, that’s the apparent definition these days. You’re not a geek if you wear a pocket protector and belong to the Chess Club. You’re a geek if you’re Read more »

Marvel’s 2011 Event: ‘Fear Itself’

Marvel’s 2011 Event: ‘Fear Itself’

Marvel Comics is no stranger to hyperbole, and what happened today at a special press conference at Midtown Comics in New York City is a perfect example. Marvel’s Joe Quesada, Tom Brevoort, and Axel Alonso unveiled the company’s crossover event of 2011, entitled Fear Itself, labeling it with terms like “an extinction-level event,” “as ambitious as Civil War,” and “the biggest story we’ve ever told.” Details about Fear Itself‘s story are few. It’s inspired by the fear-based climate we all live in (think: terrorism, economy, unemployment, etc.), and it involves the God of Fear — who gets stronger the more that people feel fear — attacking the Marvel Universe. Tron and Tron: Legacy Posters

Tron and Tron: Legacy Posters

I have to confess that I never saw Tron and was not aware of its existence until the buzz about Tron: Legacy started. Now that Twitter is filled with comments by people who saw Tron Legacy, my interest has been piqued. Meanwhile a lot of video clips and fan art are showing up making it clear that this movie is to be seen on the big screen. Last month Robin posted every Tron: Legacy images available then. With the movie currently showing and people talking about it, it has become a must see and get to know cult movie for me. Can you say Tron is a cult movie? I’m Read more »

Get Your Hands on These Iron-On Star Wars Decals

Get Your Hands on These Iron-On Star Wars Decals

Children of the 80s will probably remember the days when DIY was the thing. There were no stores – online or otherwise – that sold ready made shirts with cool designs. These days, you simply have to visit your favorite online store and pick shirts: The Big Bang Theory, Star Trek, Star Wars – name it, you’ve got it! While there is that convenience factor, there is something to be said about creating things for yourself. That’s where iron-on t-shirt decals come into the picture. Read more »
