Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v 8

Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v 8

What do you get when you take away a caps lock key and put a death ray there instead? You get a technologically-advanced wine vending machine with robust DNS service. No, the preceding were not sentences spat out by blog spam bots. They’re just part of the wacky wild fun that’s been this week in geek. Read on… WIN: Superpowers With the apparently unceremonious departure of Charles “Chic” Eglee from the creative team at The Walking Dead last week came a boon for fans of Brian Michael Bendis’ cop tale Powers. Word has it this week that Eglee has been pondering making Powers into a television series for months. As Read more »

Doorways

Doorways

This week into it’s second issue, Doorways from IDW is a story of a failed TV show from George R.R. Martin. Now, that may sound terribly unfair, but in the first issue the esteemed Mr Martin delivered a potted history of this story, derived from simply the first line of another story : – ‘There is a girl who goes between the worlds’. This was for a pitch back in 1985, a TV show telling the tale of a girl fleeing previous captors from alternate Earth to alternate Earth. Of course, nowadays this is not a new idea, but back then this was pre-Exiles, even pre-Sliders (but of course we Read more »

Sony Unveils Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Sony Unveils Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Long known to be in the pipeline but under intense secrecy until today, Sony has finally taken the wraps off of the third Uncharted game, which finds Nathan Drake on an adventure in the desert. The title? Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. And it’s coming late next year. As the title implies, deception is the game’s theme, so look for lots of double-crosses and even some kind of deception involving hero Nathan Drake’s identity. The story brings finds Nathan teaming up with his mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan to search the globe for a real-life legendary lost city called Iram of the Pillars (aka “Atlantis of the Sands”), leading them to the Arabian Read more »

Bacon Lovers Will Want No Other Nativity Scene This Christmas

Bacon Lovers Will Want No Other Nativity Scene This Christmas

Bacon lovers, your Christmas can’t get any better! I just saw this image at Picasa, and it was love at first sight! (Actually, it more like “I want some bacon, NOW!”) Call it crazy, weird, even borderline sacrilegious, but I think that many of you will agree that SayUncle – the guy who originally shared the photo – is a genius for having come up with this set up. Geek Jewelry Christmas Present Ideas [Hint!]

Geek Jewelry Christmas Present Ideas [Hint!]

A comment notification in my Inbox led me to an old post that I might have otherwise forgotten: the Caffeine Molecule Necklace. Thanks to Kaya, I discovered an online jewelry shop that kicks butt; and trust me, it is not your ordinary jewelry store! Christmas is only a couple of weeks away, and here are some items that just might find their way to your shopping list – or maybe your wish list! Read more »

New Ghostbusters Game is Download-Only

New Ghostbusters Game is Download-Only

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime is the name of the next entry in the Ghostbusters video game franchise. Ghostbusters: The Video Game (man, I still need to play that one sometime…) was enough of a hit that Atari and Sony are planning a pseudo-sequel. It’s not a traditional sequel, because where the first game was an off-the-shelf third-person adventure, Sanctum of Slime takes a top-down view (similar to Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light), and it’s not selling in stores. Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and Atari.com will be selling the game for consoles and PC. As developed by creative studio Behavior Studios, this new game finds you taking on Read more »

Mata Hari

Mata Hari

Times like this, I remember what it is about the comics medium that so enthralled me, even before I ever discovered the worlds of spandex on offer. Rich Wilkes, creator of the xXx franchise has a penned a graphic novel about the infamous Mata Hari due to be released next year. However in a sound move, last month Radical Comics released a $1 preview issue, which a friend was kind enough to lend me, and I am hooked. Now we all know what A Mata Hari is, but how much do we know about THE Mata Hari? Myself, I have realised very little after reading this excellent introduction to her Read more »

When Rubik’s Cube Waxes Poetic

When Rubik’s Cube Waxes Poetic

What comes to mind when someone says “Rubik’s Cube”? People of my generation will almost always think of that classic image of the a cube with six faces and just as many colors – white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow. Embarrassing as it is, I cannot claim that I have solved the puzzle more than five times (MAX); and even then, each time took me an excruciatingly long time. Today, I just take a look at the variations of the cube and enjoy them for aesthetic purposes. Read more »

Tomb Raider Getting Gritty Reboot

Tomb Raider Getting Gritty Reboot

How many times has a new creative director taken the reins of the Tomb Raider franchise and promised to “rescue the franchise with a bold new take”? Square Enix-powered studio Crystal Dynamics (which is responsible for the last four Tomb Raider games, including the acclaimed downloadable title Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light) is the latest to try their hand at crafting a definitive, new Lara Croft experience. But for this reboot, it looks like the promise of “whole new thing” might actually be fitting. Titled simply Tomb Raider, this latest incarnation of the iconic video game franchise is essentially a reinvention of Lara Croft herself. Crystal Dynamics’ Darrell Read more »

How Hipsters Stole the Geek Mojo

"You went full hipster, man. Never go full hipster."

(Or, how “geek chic” has somehow become mainstream.) Geeks are, by definition, an obsessive lot, seizing onto one or more hobbies, television shows, movies, etc. with a frightening passion. If you’re reading this blog, chances are you have at least one geek obsession. In fact, I’d wager you have several. Geeks of old were the opposite of socially conscious; pocket protectors & calculator watches were the name of the game no matter how many Revenge of the Nerds movies they spawned. Geeks of today are a bit more aware of what others think, though a true geek may wear his “Live Long and Prosper” t-shirt come hell or high water. Read more »
