Star Wars Blu-ray Coming in September

Star Wars Blu-ray Coming in September

I hope you’re ready to shell out more money to George Lucas. Announced today at CES in Las Vegas — by Darth Vader himself, no less — the Star Wars saga on Blu-ray is arriving this September in three flavors: the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, and the complete saga. The first two will run you $70 retail, while the complete saga, which comprises a total of nine discs — six for the movies, three for more than 30 hours of extras — will be sold for $140. Amazon.com already has all three sets available for pre-order at discounted prices of $44.99 and $89.99, respectively. Of course, Lucasfilm is quick Read more »

Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v 12

Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v 12

Welcome to 2011! Does it feel different than twenty-ten? Regardless, some things never change: the first week of the new year’s brought plenty of wins and plenty of fails, and we’re here to recap the best of the best and the worst of the worst for you. Whether it’s urine-activated video games, elaborate medical hoaxes, or Doctor Who‘s regeneration, we’ve got something for everyone this week in geek. WIN: Digital Stoners Rejoice, everyone who’s ever dreamed of recreating laser light Pink Floyd bowling with a Wii, the entire inventory of Spencer’s, and an iPod: the band has finally caved to digital downloads of individual tracks. They have hitherto bitterly fought Read more »

Avatar Kinect Unveiled

Avatar Kinect Unveiled

Man, I hate watching Microsoft keynote addresses. Microsoft always tries so hard to be cool, to capture that ineffable “it” quality that Apple exudes so effortlessly. This one included a demonstration of Windows Phone 7 by a woman who had had way too many energy drinks. But I digress. Microsoft just opened the annual Consumer Electronics Show by showing off some of their big new stuff that’s on the way (Surface 2.0 looks sweet), and among those words were some announcements for Xbox users. Chief among them: a new feature called “Avatar Kinect.” You could call it Xbox’s answer to PlayStation Home, but that wouldn’t be very accurate. It’s a Read more »

Propworx Launches Caprica Memorabilia Auction

Propworx Launches Caprica Memorabilia Auction

Did you know that in Canada, they continued showing the final episodes of Caprica last year? There I was, patiently (trying to be patient actually) waiting for months till US TV picked up the series again, only to find out that they had aired the series anyway. In any case, the information comes too late for me as – here’s even sadder news – SyFy rolled out the last five episodes of Caprica last night. Read more »

XToaster360: Putting That Old Toaster to Good Use

XToaster360: Putting That Old Toaster to Good Use

Got an old toaster or two that is merely collecting dust in the corner? If you are a candidate for that reality TV series The Hoarders, then you might want to put one of those toasters to good use – just like what this guy who calls himself ncarouso11 did. Basically, he got a four-slice toaster, took out its innards, and then replaced (carefully, I bet) them with the stuff that you find inside of an Xbox360. Here’s how it looks. In case you’re wondering how you get the game CD in, here’s the answer. Here’s a video of the toaster slash Xbox360 in action in case you need more Read more »

The Tears of a ‘Bot

The Tears of a ‘Bot

Last week a giant in the world of special effects slipped quietly away with little to-do in the public eye. Grant McCune, the man responsible for R2-D2, died of pancreatic cancer in his California home. He was 67. Usually my posts here are rife with snark and flippancy, but I was compelled to take a moment’s break from my usual modus operandi to properly and somberly address the extraordinary achievements of a man whose life’s work has culminated in some of the most iconic characters and special effects in geek history. Review: Back to the Future: The Game

Review: Back to the Future: The Game

Back to the Future: The Game wields nostalgia with a fun story that never feels forced or trite. Instead, it’s a storyline that seems to grow organically out of everything laid out in the movies. There’s a bit of mumbo-jumbo involving a lightning strike as an explanation for how the DeLorean survived its encounter with a train at the end of the third movie. But I recommend you just go with it, because Marty’s back, Doc’s back, and it’s time to go Back to the Future, baby. Telltale Games clearly saw this game, which is being told in six episodic installments, as a labor of love. Because their attention to Read more »

14 Words That Must Go

14 Words That Must Go

Every year, Lake Superior State University holds a quirky publicity stunt where they announce a list of words and phrases that they believe should be banished from the English language for overuse and misuse. Now you might be wondering why this college is the authority on outdated terms (I know I am), but apparently their claim to fame is that they’ve released this annual “banished words” list 36 times. So basically, history equals power. Hm. In any case, LSSU compiles its annual list based on nominations from the public-at-large (largely submitted at their website), and this year’s nominations — which topped 1,000 words — were whittled down to 12. Tech-heads, Read more »
