When I was a kid, my brother and I used to watch Voltron: Defender of the Universe every day. There was something that oozed cool about it. Maybe it was because it had a bit of anime-inspired sophistication to it; it didn’t talk down to kids the way other cartoons did. Or it could have been those big honkin’ lion robots. Yeah, it was probably the robots. In conjunction with the upcoming Voltron revival, Voltron Force, which will be airing on Nicktoons in 2012, THQ has secured the rights to create video games based on the property. Despite the enduring popularity of the brand, only one video game has ever Read more »

Affetto. The super Japanese robot baby
We’ve profiled robots as toys controlled by iOS devices and robots getting their own social network, but the creepy images above have to take the cake in terms of robots’ eventually taking over the world. Read more »
Felicia Day in Dragon Age Web Series
BioWare has teamed up with delightful social media maven Felicia Day to produce an exclusive web series in support of Dragon Age II. Entitled Dragon Age: Redemption, the six-part series stars and was created by Day, best known for her work on the web series The Guild. Set Dragon Age II‘s timeframe, the series follows an Elven assassin named Tallis (Day) who’s hired by the Qunari to capture a renegade mage planning to unleash havoc on the world of Ferelden, the fantasy world where the games are set. Her quest requires that she join forces with other companions whose motives and goals don’t always match up with her’s, but they Read more »
Angry Zombie Birds
There is no end yet in sight for the Angry Birds popularity. What started as an iPhone app has evolved into a huge brand franchise. Toys, board games, games for all consoles, phones and fan art. Tomasz Kaczkowski combined Angry Birds with another popular thing, zombies. Tomasz drew some awesome illustrations of the birds and pig as zombie figures. I must seek out a zombie fan to find out what the fascination is about. I just saw the promo for ‘The Walking Dead’ and no way I’ll be watching those late at night. The Zombie birds are pretty scary for a cartoon illustration, the art work is excellent and worthy Read more »
Mythological Characters Deconstructed
I have always been fascinated by mythology and fantasy. Greek, Roman, Norse, Filipino, etc. – various stories and character held me captive as a child. Even as an adult (supposed to be one, at least), I still find the magic that mythology offers irresistible. Now deconstruction may not be the best thing that you can do with mythological characters, but Roberto Osti’s work is perhaps the most interesting thing I have seen this month. Osti’s work spans illustrations, paintings, drawings, and more. It seems that he has studied art all his life, and he also got a degree in Anatomical/Surgical Drawing. (Who knew that such a degree program existed?) This Read more »
More than pigs stealing eggs, Angry Birds plush toys are being stolen at Mobile World Congress ’11
Apparently it isn’t just the pigs that are stealing the eggs. Humans are responsible for stealing… the birds! At Mobile World Congress, we caught sight of the ROVIO booth featuring everybody’s favorite time waster, Angry Birds. It appears that the humble booth has been unwillingly stripped down because of hardcore fans stealing the display plush toys. The only thing that’s keeping this guy’s hoodie from being stolen is the fact that he’s wearing it. Read more »
A Transformers Game That Won’t Suck?
As a rule, movie tie-in video games are abysmal. Made with too little time and not enough polish, they exist primarily to fleece more money out of the movie-going public, to experience the movie’s story a second time. (Toy Story 3 stands as an exception to this rule, as its game was, by all accounts, rather fantastic.) The first two Transformers games based on Michael Bay’s movies were just awful. But there may be cause to hope over the tie-in for the Transformers: Dark of the Moon game (I’m still hating that title). What’s the cause for this sudden optimism? Unlike the first two games, which were made by TT Read more »
Have a Bacon-y Valentine’s Day!
In my part of the world, this commercialized “holiday” is over for most people. To be honest, I was overwhelmed by the degree of enthusiasm I observed tonight. People in this city really do take Valentine’s Day seriously! I don’t know if you do celebrate this “Hallmark holiday”, but here is something I discovered over the weekend. I got the best Valentine’s gift ever – a web site about everyone’s favorite food: BACON! Dubbed Republic of Bacon, this site is all that bacon lovers need, really. I have to warn you though – do not visit if you will have problems getting your hand on some bacon. The moment I Read more »
