Just several more days, and countless of people around the world will be celebrating a Hallmark holiday with those special to them. Then again, there will be just as many who will not care or will pretend not to. Whether you make it a habit to celebrate Valentine’s Day or you treat February 14 just like any other day, here is something that would be a perfect gift for chocolate lovers who do not mind not-so-ordinary things. How does a chocolate skull sound? Chocolate Skulls is the baby of Marina Malvada, who got started on the idea of skulls made out of chocolate way back in 1993. As with many Read more »

Philadelphia, Rocky statue yes. Detroit, RoboCop statue no.
RoboCop, one of the sweetest films of my generation, will not be honored with a statue by Detroit in the same way as another film, the meh-inducing Rocky, has been by Philadelphia. Read more »
If I Had an iPhone 4, I’d Use This Case
Oh, iPhone. I honestly love you. I want you. I want you so bad. We could make sweet music together, but that data plan of yours always comes between us. I know you love your monthly data plan more than you love me. I can’t afford it. And that’s why we can’t be together. If we were together, I would wrap you in this custom LEGO case, a handcrafted-to-order item available from Etsy seller RecordWallets. For just $19.50 + $3 U.S. shipping, I could own this clear, hard plastic case to protect my beloved iPhone from the daily wear-and-tear of life, while simultaneously proclaiming my other great love: LEGO. ‘The Darkness II’ Is Coming
By popular demand of pretty much no one, 2k Games is releasing a sequel to The Darkness, based on the Top Cow comic book of the same name. The Darkness II will hit stores this Fall, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows. I never played the first game, did you? Here’s the details. The Darkness II is set two years after the first game (which released four years ago — confused yet?), and is being developed by Digital Extremes, the studio that created the disappointing Dark Sector and had a hand in the development of several bigger titles like Unreal and BioShock. In this new game, anti-hero Jackie Estacado Read more »
Breach, You Disappoint Me
See that? That’s actually 71 minutes of disappointment. It’s one of those times when you should never judge a book by its cover — or judge a game by its YouTube preview. I had been waiting for Breach to finally launch for both the consoles and PC via Steam. It had the makings of a great game, pulling everything we loved from other titles: the destructible environments of Bad Company 2, the 3rd person cover fire of Gears of War and the fast-paced action and leveling system of Modern Warfare. You know when a game feels right when all of the elements come together to create an original experience. Breach Read more »
Google Doodle: Happy Birthday, Jules Verne!
It’s the day to pay homage to one of the greatest minds in science fiction: Jules Vernes. On this day, in 1828, Jules Verne was born in Brittany, France. Countless people owe him their first foray into the wondrous worlds of thousands of leagues under the sea, the center of the Earth, and much more. Even those who do not read books have been exposed to Verne’s creations, thanks to Hollywood. As can be expected, Google has not let an event such as this pass without doing something about it. For those of you who do not visit the Google home page regularly, you might want to spare a few Read more »
RoboEarth. A world wide web for robots, the downfall of humans?
As humans are we inching ever closer to the day envisioned in the superb? film I, Robot, starring Will Smith, where NS-5-type robots controlled by a supercomputer akin to the film’s VIKI, resulting in robots turning on humans and killing us? Read more »
Call of Juarez Jumps to Present Day
The Call of Juarez western shooter franchise is taking a page from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and bringing its next entry into the modern day. So how do you make a shooter modern when it’s so strongly characterized by the Old West? Ubisoft and developer Techland’s answer is to do what FX’s television series Justified did: juxtapose Wild West sensibilities with the realities of today. Call of Juarez: The Cartel takes players on a journey from Los Angeles to Juarez, Mexico, with a story that Ubisoft’s press release describes with words like “immersive,” “mature,” “gritty,” and “relevant.” The publisher is mum on other details about the game, though a Read more »
Introducing the Paper-Like e-Ink NoteSlate
Call it the anti-iPad. Its actual name is the NoteSlate, and it wants to replace all the notepads and paper in your life. Instead of running apps or playing multimedia, it does just one thing: write. You can sketch, you can write, you can draw, and you can save whatever you do on an SD card up to 32GB. It plays MP3s, too, though I don’t really see the need on a device made for simplicity of purpose. Come June, $99 will get you this clever slate/tablet that sports a 13″ display that comes in either white or black, and is just 6mm thick (less than a quarter of an Read more »
