Can anyone really explain why Doctor Who‘s TARDIS time machine is a humble police box on the outside, but a sprawling scifi loft on the inside? I’m an avid fan of the BBC revival, and I do remember mention of some mumbo jumbo about the TARDIS‘ interior being in a different dimension. But on the whole, it seems to be one of those “just go with it” concepts that we viewers are better off not pondering too hard. Here in the real world, it’s impossible to make something bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Which is why crafty LEGO builder “Mr. Xenomurphy” fashioned the interior of Read more »

Uncharted 3: Enter the Villain
You can’t have a great hero without a great villain, or so goes the adage. The hotly-anticipated third entry in the Uncharted series has just unveiled its dastardly mustache-twirler. But in this case, the creative team at Naughty Dog has given hero Nathan Drake a nemesis with two X chromosomes and some refined sophistication. Meet Katherine Marlowe, who’s reportedly the head of a secret society that dates back to the time of Queen Elizabeth I. (That’s four hundred years, for those without a history book handy.) Naughty Dog describes Marlowe as a “coldly calculating” woman that you don’t want to get in the way of. As you can see in Read more »
LEGO Pirates Goodness
Man, I’m such a sucker for the LEGO games. I know they’re totally formulaic and never bring anything new or different to the medium. But doggone it if they don’t reel me in with their addictive, silly fun every single time. A brand new trailer for LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game has been released, along with a handful new screens and some previously unknown details about the game. LEGO Pirates lets players play through the most memorable scenes from the first three movies, along with the new one coming this summer, On Stranger Tides, for a total of more than 20 levels. Disney Interactive boasts that there will Read more »
Looking Forward to Our Geek Future
As we cross over into the second week of the month, I’ve been reflecting on March’s news thus far. Several pieces that point to interesting developments in our collective geek future have caught my eye. Here I’ve whittled them down to digestible bites to give you a quick glance at what we can anticipate, looking forward to this month and beyond. Speaking of digestible bites… …A team of scientists and culinary students produced edible printed objects using pureed foodstuffs instead of printer ink. While I’m not really sure what this means for our foodie future, aside perhaps from edible menus as automatic appetizers (bread baskets are so 2010), they’re printing Read more »
Auto Ink: An Art Machine
Artist Chris Eckert designed and build an ink machine. The main idea was to make it a tattoo machine, but currently it is fitted with a custom ink pen. The idea for the machine is inspired by religion. Chris believes that you are born into your religion, thus being defined by geography. Chris states that religion should unite every one from different religion instead of excluding people, which is what most religion do. It took a year to design, build and program the machine, which I must say is something you might come across hidden in centuries old pyramid or an artifact designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Read more »
iPad 2 Virtual Window
The virtual window has long been a staple of science fiction. According to movies, TV, and novels, in the future we will forego glass portals to the outside world in favor of flatscreen displays that show us any vista we choose. Does your bedroom window offer you a view of your neighbor’s brick wall? No problem — with a virtual window, you can look “out” at anything you want, like maybe the Pyramids of Egypt or Niagara Falls. Clever designer John Leung has figured out a way to make the virtual window a reality, and without breaking the bank. He postulates that if you network four iPad 2s, you’ll have Read more »
Mass Effect 3 Concept Art
Robert Simons’ blog has a few teaser art for the upcoming Mass Effect 3. Although they’re mostly environments, they’re enough to wet fans’ appetites to what apparently is one of the more engaging — but shorter role playing games from Bioware. On another note, fan art for Mass Effect isn’t lacking and we’ve found the best fan art that exists on the Internet. Presenting the works of Garret Art Lair. This isn’t fan art! It could very well pass for a movie poster! Read more »
Angry Birds Migrating to Facebook
There’s no escaping the Angry Birds, or their rivals the green pigs. Even if you don’t have access to one of the eight platforms the game is currently available for — which include iOS, Windows, and PlayStation 3 — anyone with an Internet connection will soon be able to join in the wildly popular puzzler, thanks to a version that’s in the works for Facebook. Angry Birds is no longer just a simple downloadable game. It’s an empire boasting more than 75 million downloads, allowing Rovio to achieve something few downloadable titles ever do: a prominent place in pop culture. More versions of the flagship game are in production, including Read more »
LEGO: You Will Be Assimilated
What if Star Trek‘s Borg had created the LEGO brand? That’s where my mind goes when I look at this striking construction by LEGO builder Lukáš Šógor. (A second pic taken from a different angle is below.) He describes his piece as “Future LEGO,” but to me, it screams Borg. Don’t know about you, but the Borg cliffhanger episode where Captain Picard was assimilated is one of those geek moments that’s etched in my mind forever. I still remember where I was when that cliffhanger, “The Best of Both Worlds,” first aired. I can still hear the dramatic rise in the episode’s music when Commander Riker gave the shocking order to destroy Picard Read more »
Health and Physical Education for 30-Year-Old Men Coming This Spring
Are you a single male aged 30 or over? Do you have a tough time speaking to members of the opposite sex? Are you still looking forward to your first date? Do you watch anime? If you answered yes to all of the above questions, then there’s good news. Starting this Spring, ‘Health and Physical Education for 30-Year-Old Men’ (30-sai no Hoken Taiiku) will begin airing in Japan. What is it, you ask? It is an animated guide on how to approach, date, and make love with women. The anime is advertised as being intended for “pure” men who are in their 30’s. In other words, think of 40-Year-Old Virgin, but Read more »
