If you’ve been to a party, out to a fancy establishment, or been to a store selling wine, no doubt you’ve encountered a “wine snob.” Wine snobs are those who not only consider themselves experts in the world of wine, but aren’t afraid to share their “expertise” with anyone and everyone surrounding them. They’re a “wonderful” lot to spend time with. Read more »

12 Clever Homages to Han-in-Carbonite
It’s one of the most iconic moments in geek history. Han Solo’s horrific fate at the hands of Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett was made all the more bitter because it came due to a betrayal by his friend Lando Calrissian. And then there was the whole goodbye-to-Leia thing… Brutal! Plus, the guy was frozen for like three years. That’s how long the wait was between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. (Okay, in story time it was only six months or so. But for fans forced to wait, it certainly felt like he was in there for three years.) So what do geeks do when we Read more »
Color night vision camera soon available. Paris Hilton sex tape sequel?
Night vision cameras are super devices that have been used in some super situations. A few examples include the Paris Hilton sex tape, Jame Gumb’s creepy use of night vision in Silence of the Lambs, and a funny scene involving night vision from the hilarious movie, Step Brothers. Read more »
Because We’re Not Sick of TRON Yet…
Disney XD has released a first trailer for TRON: Uprising, its upcoming animated series based on TRON: Legacy. Personally, I was surprised to find out that the series — which stars an eclectic voice cast that includes Elijah Wood, Lance Henrikssen, Mandy Moore, Paul Ruebens, and Bruce Boxleitner — takes place before Legacy, and not after it. Uprising follows a resistance leader named Beck, who tries to free his home and friends from CLU. Beck gets his training from Tron, and eventually even takes on the Tron “mantle” to rally the enemies of CLU. (I’m guessing he’s not all that successful, since CLU goes on to be the villain of Read more »
Scribblenauts’ Creators Shake Up Shooter Genre
The company behind Scribblenauts — the Nintendo DS game where you solve puzzles by conjuring up any object you can think of — is known for introducing innovative new ways of playing video games. The next genre on 5th Cell‘s list of innovation domination: the third-person shooter. Hybrid is set after an asteroid has wiped out much of Earth’s population. When society breaks down, two factions — Paladins and Variants — rise in prominence and fight for control of the planet. The game pits players in a persistent online world where you become a member of one of these two factions, and shoot it out in 3-on-3 online battles. These battles aren’t intended Read more »
Gruesome Reading
If your taste for reading tends to the more disturbing in nature, then you need to look at Top Cow’s Echoes, the second issue of which is on the shelves. I recently discussed the pleasant-seeming (but none-the-less serious) lack of mental health of the central character of the Twilight Guardian, also released by Top Cow. Echoes presents a whole new level of tortured soul, one made all the more disconcerting through its realism. The central character is an obvious schizophrenic, struggling hard enough to deal with day-to-day life as it is; losing his father only to discover that his late father was a multiple killer of children, and had kept Read more »
Modern Warfare Live Action Movie Trailer
I’m picking my jaw up off the floor, and after watching this video, you will be too. If Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was ever made into a big-budget movie, it would certainly look exactly like this. And the real kicker: it’s 100% fan made. That’s hard to believe, to say the least, particularly when the quality is this high. We’re talking full special effects, solid actors, location shooting, cinematography, the works. It’s called “Find Makarov,” and it was made as a proof of concept by a Canadian studio calling itself “We Can Pretend.” The company is hoping to gage public response, in the hopes of making a series of Read more »
Trenched! Turn NO Man’s Land into REAL Man’s Land!
Trenched! is an XBOX Live Arcade game that’s essentially Tower Defense combined with some 3rd person shooting. Art directed to look like a campy WWI boot camp with good ‘ol Sarge barking at you from the background adds that welcome flavor that makes you want to really immerse yourselves in it. It’s campy: mechs vs aliens all done in a World War I setting. Of note, the game is published by Microsoft, which means that it is an XBOX Live exclusive. The game itself is created by the same team that brought us the legendary Psychonauts franchise, so we’re guaranteed so much more than a Tower Defense game. And as Read more »
iRun. An athletic geek’s device for running the 2011 Tokyo Marathon [Video]
Sometimes geeks, dweebs, nerds, whatever you want to call those into technology, are pegged as less than athletic. Typing on a computer, playing Wii or Kinect, or reenacting lightsaber duels from Star Wars, while requiring movement, aren’t exactly athletic endeavors. Read more »
iPad 2: It’s All About Gaming, Baby
Lest you have any lingering doubt that Apple’s iOS is a gaming platform to be reckoned with, today’s events hammered the idea home. The iPad 2, just unveiled today by His Steveness, features a graphics processing that’s nine times the speed of the original iPad. That’s some monstrous horsepower, particularly for a device that was already more powerful than all other handheld gaming devices. And don’t forget, the iPad has a bigger screen than any other handheld console, so the fact that it’s now going to be able to power high-def games at 9x the original’s speed, on all that screen real estate, is incredibly impressive. The iPad 2 also Read more »
