I’m sure you’ve seen those awesome “untooned” images, where some talented digital artist created a photo-realistic version of a famous cartoon character, depicting what they would look like if they existed in real life. Here’s a collection of the very best of the best. Read more »

New Footage of Jurassic Park Game’s Dinos
Holy blessed snot, does this video make me nostalgic for Jurassic Park. That first movie rocked the world in so many ways — showing us realistic dinosaurs for the very first time, and amping up Spielberg’s Jaws-level thrills & spills to terrifying new levels. It was one of the very first times a major Hollywood movie held its spectacle cards close to the vest, refusing to reveal the dinosaurs in any of the trailers or commercials so that the experience would be preserved for those who saw it on the big screen. (That example has been followed by dozens of blockbusters in the years since.) Telltale Games is nearing release on Read more »
M.A.S.K. LEGO
Have you ever heard of M.A.S.K.? No, that was not a typo – it has nothing to do with M*A*S*H. M.A.S.K. stands for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand, and was an animated TV series aired way back in the 80s. It was directed by Japanese studios and produced by a French-American company. M.A.S.K. was influenced by the then popular G.I. Joe and Transformers – or rather, the still popular G.I. Joe and Transformers. To be honest, this is the first time that I have heard of M.A.S.K. but the cartoon seems to be gaining some attention decades later, thanks to LEGO. I stumbled upon a blog featuring LEGO models of M.A.S.K. Read more »
‘Mr. Elastic’ turns feet backwards trying to set two Guinness World Records
The Guinness Book of World Records contains many odd claims to fame. It’s a fascinating book to flip through, discovering the bizarre side of humanity. One man, 49-year-old Moses Lanham Jr., wants to his name add to the book by setting not one, but two, world records. Read more »
The Wonderful World of Amanita Design
If quirky titles like Limbo turn you on, you’re going to want to get to know Amanita Design, a tiny developer from the Czech Republic. They make the kind of games that Tim Burton or Terry Gilliam or Roald Dahl would play: point-and-click surrealist adventures. In 2009, after a series of small, free-to-play-online titles, Amanita captured attention with its first full-length game, a steampunkish adventure called Machinarium that was released for PC and Mac (hot tip: Machinarium is available at half price on the Mac App Store until the end of March). The game got rave reviews from all the major gaming journos, and now, two years after the accolades, Read more »
Presenting GIRP, from the maker of QWOP
I once read through an online FAQ session with the maker of QWOP and how he simplifies all his games by making them sports games. Because that way he doesn’t need to spend extra time explaining the rules. In QWOP, you have to sprint to the end. In GIRP (I guess a play with “GRIP”), you have to climb to the top. I really hate to explain how it works as it pretty much speaks for itself, but again, you are a untethered body that needs to make it to the finish. Keyboard letters represent the rocks you need to climb and pressing shift or control flexes your muscles to Read more »
This Will Melt Your Brain
Some people build amazing things with LEGO bricks. Only a few can transcend the art of “building,” and cull something from the plastic pieces that no living person could have dreamed possible. Read more »
New Song of Ice and Fire Figures!
I’m such a sucker for George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series, and I am definitely one of those waiting eagerly for the April debut of HBO’s TV series based on the book. Normally, I have misgivings about my favorite books being turned into TV series and movies, but with Martin himself being very active in the production, the series should live up to many a fan’s expectations. He’s also been active in promoting derivative works related to his series, including figures from Dark Sword Miniatures. Earlier today, George R.R. Martin published a note on Facebook, leaking images of the newest batch of miniatures from the series. I Read more »
The Body Shop Mix Ups
Fictional mechanical characters are very popular amongst geek. Yes, The General Lee is as much a character in The Dukes of Hazzard as Daisy Duke is. Same goes for Ecto-1 in Ghostbusters and several other movies and cartoons. There is always new fan designs to be found based on popular cars, robots, characters, etc. Artist Brandon Ortwein has a thing for cars. In November I wrote about a design by him, It Would Have Been Cooler As A Van. A poster containing several cars but as a van instead. Brandon got creative again with a couple of cars, planes and robots. He imagined that the cars, planes and robots where Read more »
