10 Awesomely Geeky Cakes

10 Awesomely Geeky Cakes

Or geekily awesome. Either way works for me. Now, about cakes…there is something to be said about throwing flour and sugar together and then allowing the heat of the oven to turn the mixture into something that will make your mouth water. Of course, there is more to baking and decorating cakes than that, but you get the idea. Now what if you can get your geek on, have your cake, and eat it too? I just saw an awesome list at Tor’s blog, which features some of the most eye-catching cakes that I have seen in a while. You know what happened next – I had to scour the Read more »

Futurian Nostalgia

Futurian Nostalgia

Now I say nostalgia, but I am actually lying. I’ve never read the original appearance of the Futurians by Dave Cockrum in the Marvel Graphic Novel series from way back when, nor their later series from Lodestone Comics. Now there are three issues released of the four issue Avatar Of The Futurians mini-series. I started reading after the first issue cover you see here, which activated my magpie senses with the splash of colour. Having no idea of the back-story was little hindrance, everything seemed pretty straightforward. Britain, especially London had been devastated in the aftermath of some huge attack or battle, and the central character, very much Lord of Read more »

Business Cards That Aren’t Really Cards

Business Cards That Aren’t Really Cards

A good business card should convey more than just your contact information. It should represent who you are, your personal philosophy, and how well you do what you do. A popular trend in business cards is to use something other than actual cards. No paper, card stock or otherwise. Instead, people are using all sorts of unusual and interesting things to pass out their personal information. Make no mistake: there’s some frickin’ weird stuff here. While these wildly creative pieces definitely set their owners apart from the crowd, I wouldn’t expect most of them to fit in a rolodex. Read more »

The Art of Video Games

The Art of Video Games

Regardless of what Roger Ebert thinks, video games are art. And now there’s proof. The Smithsonian American Art Museum is putting together an exhibition for 2012 called “The Art of Video Games.” And they wouldn’t display something that wasn’t art, right? I mean, it’s the Smithsonian, for crying out loud. They even have their own snooty cable TV network. If the Smithsonian says video games are art, then that’s good enough for me. Speaking of this 2012 exhibit, the world-famous museum is looking for your help in deciding the 80 video games that will be put on display. All you have to do is go to the exhibit’s special website, Read more »

More Binary Goodness

More Binary Goodness

Vi Hart’s Binary Hand Dance just got me thinking about all things binary. We at ForeverGeek seem to have a penchant for 1s and 0s as well. Just check out the archives, and you’ll find entries such as The Binary Ring and Binary Watch for Dad. If you are looking for some cool binary stuff, here are some of the more interesting ones that I found online. Binary Wedding Cake Obviously, this wedding cake was made for a geek couple. If you think those 1s and 0s were placed randomly, think again. The sequence is supposed to be code – a message for each other. Since we can’t really see Read more »

Tour of the id Software Office

Tour of the id Software Office

It wasn’t really what I was expecting but after watching the account of this guy’s tour, I don’t feel like throwing a chair at him. He’s one cool guy, and narrates a step by step of his experience as he enters the confines of the ID software office. Truth: It’s going to be a lot harder getting into a highly competitive gaming company’s inner sanctum. I do find it odd however that a company like ID doesn’t have some sort of touring grounds, perhaps making it look like a simulation into a first person shooter. Read more »

The LikeLight

The LikeLight

You are looking at a Facebook “Like” button made of LEGO bricks. But this is no ordinary MOC. This particular LEGO creation is hardwired to Facebook and has LED lights on the inside. The result is the LikeLight — a device that lights up every time someone clicks on the “Like” link on a particular Facebook page. It can be made to work for any Facebook page; at the time of this writing, it’s apparently wired into Lil Wayne’s page. The device was made by an ad agency called Red Pepper, as a social media experiment, using an Arduino microcontroller, an Ethernet connection, and some simple PHP code. I’m not Read more »

Rebirth of the Commodore 64 PC

Rebirth of the Commodore 64 PC

Commodore has re-booted their 64 PC line, now packing more power than the first release in 1982. Keeping the same, now retro casing, but fully fitted with the most recent technology. Offering 5 price class, from a barebone case of $250 to a fully equipped case, containing amongst other a Blue Ray drive and 1 TB disk for a grand total of $894. That is way pricier than a Mac Mini. I don’t think they will sell a huge amount of it, but there certainly is a niche group of hardcore Commodore fans. The fact that the case is the same as almost 30 years ago and it comes with Read more »

Hate cleaning the bathroom? Tell the robot to do it

Hate cleaning the bathroom? Tell the robot to do it

Anyone with parents intent on providing a little discipline and structure in their children know the dreaded feeling of having to complete chores.  Unfortunately as one grows older it hits you that chores never go away.  Certainly there exist some that you don’t mind doing as much, vacuuming for instance, but there are others that some could do without.  One of those has to be cleaning the bathroom.
