Ezio Auditore, the assassin introduced in Assassin’s Creed II and whose life story continued in last year’s Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, is about to come full circle in the fourth game in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.
And along with the announcement of this new game, Ubisoft’s master plan comes more sharply into focus.
According to Game Informer, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations will be split into three separate-yet-congruent storylines: Ezio’s, his ancestor Altair’s, and modern-day descendant Desmond Miles. Ezio’s story will come to its conclusion, as the game depicts Ezio older than we’ve ever seen him. Altair’s story will be continued, no doubt showing how aspects of his and Ezio’s lives tie together. And Desmond’s tale will pick right back up after the cliffhanger at the end of Brotherhood. But you can expect Ezio to get the biggest portion of playtime, since this is his swan song.
Game Informer‘s cover art depicts Ezio and Altair back-to-back, a symbolic image showing how the two of them will work together across time in the game. The GI website says that Ezio’s journey will take him to Constantinople “at the height of the Ottoman Empire,” where he’ll gain a weapon that’s new to the franchise, as well as a tool that will “change the way you’ll fight and traverse the world.” Multiplayer will be expanded to an even bigger role this time, with more customization options.
One thing nobody is outright saying, but can be inferred I think, is that with Revelation‘s announcement, we now have a clear picture of just why Brotherhood wasn’t Assassin’s Creed III, and Revelations isn’t IV. Clearly, each new numbered entry in the franchise will introduce a new playable character — a different ancestor of Desmond’s — and these two latest games were needed to first tell the entirety of Ezio’s story. AC3 will undoubtedly come next, with who knows how many additional installments after that to continue that new character’s story.
