I would be remiss in my duty as a comics fan and indeed a human being if I failed to celebrate the return of Canada’s premier super-team – Alpha Flight! What is even more of a pleasure is that it is written by the esteemed Greg Pak, creator of such sagas such as World War Hulk. Right, that’s the fanboy stuff over. But seriously folks, this first, erm, point one’th (point first?) issue is promising, containing all the hooks that a new reader needs. Even better, all the ingredients for life long readers are present. When the original Alpha Flight series began, its major strength was always the power of Read more »

MacRecipes: How to Be Like MacGyver
Children of the 80s – how many times have you imagined yourself to be the MacGyver of your world, dashing into a volatile situation that seems hopelessly lost, only to save the day with your ingenuity? How many times have you sat there for seemingly endless hours thinking of ways to use duct tape and some coat hangers to solve a problem? Or maybe you’re more into using combinations of chemicals to create an impressive explosion? I find it sad that children and teens of today mostly have no clue as to who MacGyver is. Or if they do, they don’t really grasp just how amazing that unassuming guy was Read more »
LEGO Harry Potter 2 Coming This Year
TT Games is set to work their LEGO magic once again by the end of this year, with LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7. The game is set to release by this Christmas, on every game system known to man — including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, Sony’s new handheld the NGP (will that be out by Christmas? did I miss a press release?), Nintendo DS, 3DS, and PC. One can only assume an iPad version will be in the offing at some point as well, since Years 1-4 was translated into an iPad game late last year. The new game will send you to the likes of Grimmauld Place, the Read more »
Duke Nudem: NSFW Strip Tease for Duke Nukem Forever
The Witcher II has nudity. So does Duke Nukem. And they’re going all out with the ESRB ratings. Duke Nudem is a frustrating target practice game vs a couple of women. If you win, they strip down naked. Yes. That’s why you won’t find this on YouTube. The game is frustratingly hard (obviously part of the rules) as you’re playing using accelerated mouse movements. Must-See-TV From ‘The Dark Knight’ Writer
It’s been a long time since I’ve wanted to watch anything on CBS, aka the “procedurals and comedies network.” I’m not knockin’ either one, they just don’t do anything for me (yes, even The Big Bang Theory, an admittedly geek-centric show). CBS hasn’t much luck with genre television in the last few decades, but that’s about to change. Because if there was ever a winning combination, it’s the two powerhouses behind this Fall’s Person of Interest. The first is Jonathan Nolan. You know him as the screenwriter of the best (and highest-grossing) superhero movie of all time: The Dark Knight. He’s also the younger brother of celebrated director Christopher Nolan (also Read more »
Vostok 4 Pines Stout Goes Boldly Where No Beer Has Gone Before
The Land Down Under may not be the first place you think of when talking about the best beer in the world, but them Aussies surely have got something with this innovative beer. Vostok 4 Pines Stout does have a ring to it, but it does more than get you all tipsy. It is the first ever beer that has been brewed for zero gravity environments! You know, just in case you find yourself in outer space in the near future… What with space tourism seemingly just around the corner, I think the brewers are simply exhibiting foresight. Now, drinking beer may be the last thing on the mind of Read more »
4 Teasers for Modern Warfare 3
After the big Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 data leak last week, Activision has responded with a measure of grace by turning the unexpected leak into an opportunity. Activision quickly confirmed the game’s existence, that it was being made by Infinity Ward (naturally), and even let loose a quartet of teaser trailers. The trailers don’t show much; they’re mostly audio voiceover files from the game, but hardcore fans will no doubt be excited by them. Each trailer is themed around a major country that you get to visit while playing the game. At around the 18-second mark of each teaser, there’s some wireframe-ish, neon green imagery from the playable Read more »
Doctor Hoo
An artist named Mallory Dyer submitted this killer t-shirt design to Threadless, and it’s just become available to buy. Entitled “Doctor Hoo,” the shirt is based on this awesome art piece also painted by Ms. Dyer (which you can also view below; beneath which I’ve provided portraits of all eleven Doctors for comparison). The title is obviously a play on Doctor Who, with the image depicting all eleven Doctors in the form of owls. It’s terribly clever, because if you don’t know Doctor Who, the owls just look like a cute shirt design. But fans of the show will instantly recognize them. My favorite has to be Tennant (#10) if Read more »
Success and Failure
Scanning the shipping list for today, I was hoping to find the next instalment of Zenescope’s Dream Eater saga, the crossover between Grimm Fairy Tales, Neverland, Wonderland and their other titles, which I hoped to use as a jumping on point. Unfortunately, it was not to be, looks like I will have to wait another week. Other than Wonderland and Stingers, my experience with the Zenescope line of titles is limited. I’ve dashed in and out of Grimm Fairy Tales and I’ve always enjoyed the visit, which I have detailed in this column before. Yet the seeming lack of an overall storyline in the issues I read discouraged me from Read more »
This R2D2 BBQ Will Force You Out of the Basement
It’s that time of the year – when the weather allows people to act like “normal” human beings again. Little by little, you see people spending more time outdoors. Maybe those who live in basements (interpret that as you wish) will disagree with me, but once you see this awesome custom-made thing that you have to use outdoors, you might just change your mind. I found this R2D2 barbecue in a forum, and not much can be said about it, really. It looks awesome, and I bet it took a good deal of work to make it look like it does. Oh, yes, this R2D2 BBQ does work – with Read more »
