Oftentimes, works of art are more than what they seem to be at first glance. Artist Tom Gallant’s work is something else, though.
Do you have a stack of old pr0n magazines laying around in your basement? Or maybe they’re under the mattress. You can always keep them as collector’s items, or you can bring them to the nearest recycling center and do your part in contributing to helping Mother Earth. Here’s a better idea, courtesy of Tom Gallant – why not make intricate works of art by cutting up the pages of the magazines?
The result is something that has hints of things NSFW, and yet not quite. Here’s one example, titled Parkfeuer, which I think is supposed to be a kind of rose. See the eye and the red-tipped fingers?1
If you want to follow his example, though, you need more than a pair of ultra-sharp scissors. The Brussels-based artist makes use of a surgical blade to cut the pages of the magazines. He also layers his cut outs to create something that seems blurry, but upon closer inspection, you just might get a hint of flesh here and there.
Put a bunch of these cut prints together, and this is what you get. 2
Totally harmless, isn’t it? They say that if you stare long and hard enough, the work just might become NSFW. Looking beyond the low-brow nature of the “raw material”, you will actually appreciate Gallant’s work. Here’s a video featuring him several years ago.
I don’t know about you, but the precision – and patience! – is nothing short of amazing.
