Putting aside all discussion of ‘is it a reboot?’, ‘is it not a reboot?’ and ‘how do you define a reboot anyway, ‘cos this isn’t one, honest’; I was drawn to my pile of unread Image stories, and have found another little treasure.
It’s quite apropos actually. An entire town undergoes a reboot so-to-speak; waking up one morning to find completely different people in their house as to the night before, and apart from noticing a difference, their entire memories wiped. Almost as if they had had a mass visit from the Men In Black with their amnesia sticks.
Ten years later, a journalist decides to go see how the town has recovered, and tries to find the story. Unintendedly, he uncovers hints of what actually happened, while a mass grave is unearthed by one of the local citizenry.
Speaking of the locals, they all seem a little odd. One could assume a town-wide memory loss would do this to them, but when I say odd, I mean ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ odd. I am reminded of the much under-rated 2001 film Dagon, without quite the same amount of shuffling.
But when the reported is told not to listen to the shadows or the dead, for they are no better than the living in this town, it is certain that something is transpiring here.
Memoir is wonderfully moody; the tension not over-done but served up in bite-sized chunks. It is also bi-monthly, so each issue has to stand out more to bring the reader back, and at this, the writer Ben McCool is most successful. I can’t believe I left this to languish in my to-read pile for so very long.
It’s not too late to pick up an issue, so hie thee to your local comic store and grab this. I look forward to seeing more work from a name that is new to me.
