Chucks for Geeks. Super Mario Bros. Converse All-Stars

Chucks for Geeks. Super Mario Bros. Converse All-Stars

Super Mario Bros., the classic video game from Nintendo first released in 1985 for the Nintendo entertainment system, follows the exploits of Mario and Luigi as they venture through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser.  Once the best selling video game of all-time until being surpassed by Wii Sports in 2009, Super Mario Bros. is more than just a video game, the game’s characters have also become features in the fashion world. Another Vampire Hunter? Sure, Why Not?

Another Vampire Hunter? Sure, Why Not?

It is a well-known fact that everything that Ron Marz touches has the potential to turn to gold. After all, this is the man that turned a totally new character into Green Lantern much to the disgust and horror of long-time GL fans; and see how that turned out. Kyle Rayner is now as beloved as the man Hal Jordan himself. Of course, whether Kyle survives into the new revamp as part of the new Care Bear Corps as the furiousfanboys call them is up for discussion. Ha! Care Bear Corps! Love the name. Anyway, I digress. I picked up Shinku #1 yesterday, a new title from Image Comics, mainly Read more »

Game of Thrones Flowchart: Would You Survive in the Seven Kingdoms?

Game of Thrones Flowchart: Would You Survive in the Seven Kingdoms?

The characters all die. Would you make it if you got dumped in the middle of the Seven Kingdoms? Don’t get me wrong – I love this series, but I have never denied the fact that every reading makes me depressed because all the “good” ones die. Even the “bad” ones with “good” sides die. They all die. Still, I think it’s merely a representation of real life – sooner or later we’ll all die, albeit not in such dramatic or grisly ways as George R.R. Martin’s characters do. Anyhow, the season finale of HBO’s Game of Thrones is this weekend. Can you believe that? I need to catch up Read more »

Here’s Your Solution to “Inhumane” Killing of Animals for Food: Poop Burger

Here’s Your Solution to “Inhumane” Killing of Animals for Food: Poop Burger

I am sure you have heard/encountered some people who think that one shouldn’t eat meat because it’s taking advantage of animals. Political correctness aside, I see some flaws in their arguments, but I will not get into that here. (There is, of course, the argument that raising animals for food contributes largely to the problem of greenhouse gases.) Instead, I propose a solution which may or may not ruin your appetite. It’s easy enough for non-carnivores to take the stand that real animal meat should not be consumed. For those who like their meat, though, actually foregoing meat is a totally different matter. Enter Mitsuyuki Ikeda, a Japanese scientist who Read more »

What is JK Rowling’s “Pottermore”?

What is JK Rowling’s “Pottermore”?

J.K. Rowling is up to something. What that something is, we won’t find out until next Thursday, June 23rd. But it’s definitely something related to Harry Potter, because Rowling has just unveiled a new website called Pottermore. And from the stylized logo on display there, it looks as though “Pottermore” is the title of whatever it is she’s been working on. So what could it be? Read more »

What We Learned from E3 About Batman: Arkham City

What We Learned from E3 About Batman: Arkham City

So I’ve finally gotten around to playing Batman: Arkham Asylum lately. Yeah, I know, I’m way behind the curve. It got to be one of those games that kept be swept to the bottom of the pile. Shouldn’t have, but did. And of course I’m learning that the game does indeed rock every bit as much as the years of hype have suggested. I first played a bit of the game’s opening back at E3 2009 and was extra impressed with the fluidity of the controls, the dynamic combat and environment interactivity, and the stunningly sharp graphics. Yes, Arkham Asylum is all that and more. (And I’ll have it conquered Read more »

Possibly the Worst Idea Ever

Possibly the Worst Idea Ever

The people behind Thomas the Tank Engine have hired Shane Acker, the director/animator who created 9, to develop a live action big-screen Thomas movie. The movie is described as a complete re-imagining of Thomas‘ cast of talking trains and the mythical Island of Sodor into “a next generation fantasy adventure film franchise.” The look and feel of it all will be completely new and different than the preschool TV series. Read between the lines: HIT Entertainment, which owns the rights to Thomas, wants to create a new, separate version of the franchise for older kids. Acker will be assisted by filmmakers with some impressive pedigree, such as Weta Workshop (famously Read more »

Robin Williams in the new Ocarina of Time ad for 3DS

Robin Williams in the new Ocarina of Time ad for 3DS

Who would have known? Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin Williams was named after the comedian’s favorite princess. The 30 second commercial in lieu of Father’s Day speaks loads of the relationship the father-daughter pair have when it comes to video games. Ad on top. Interview at the bottom. When Robin Williams and his wife were pregnant, they spent countless hours playing The Legend of Zelda for the NES. They loved the name and christened their daughter with it. Read more »
