Nine year old Owain Weinert was diagnosed with a really bad case of Leukemia but that didn’t stop him from realizing his dream of meeting real developers and designing his own game for the iOS. Made possible by Make a Wish Foundation, Owain worked with the team from 4th and Battery and Popcap Games to create A.S.P — Allied Star Police.
And you know what? It’s damn addicting! I’m not quite sure if the actual game mechanics were designed by Owain. If you read through the game’s history, Owain pretty much designed the game’s storyline and units but I’m not sure if he was actually involved in figuring out the actual mechanics. It doesn’t matter — Owain still did a really good job working with the team to come up with this masterpiece. A.S.P. is a three level tug-o-war with the Allied Star Police on the left side and the Flamions on the right. With a steady stream of resources made available, you need to push your forces up to the enemy’s base and do enough damage to destroy it. The battlefield consists of four lanes where you need to have each lane covered to block incoming forces from plowing their way to your base. Since all the units can fire at an arc, you may not need to fill up all the lanes at any given point. You have several arsenal at your disposal, mostly vehicles of varying speed, damage per second output, and armor class. From fast moving but weak scouts to the slower but more powerful tanks, you need to work your way up to doing enough damage in order to collect more scrap and increase your money stockpile to churn out the bigger weapons. The ASP can make use of missle strikes, orbital cannons and temporary invincibility to give forces the needed push forward in cases where it seems the battle isn’t going anywhere.
There are three levels made available in this free game. Essentially, the game pits these levels as beginner, advanced and insane difficulties with more pressure put on your forces as the difficulty increases. A.S.P. does have its tactical element as you simply can’t spam the battlefield with tanks. A good combination of fast moving units, long ranged snipers and tanks as meat shields can help you turtle your way up to the Flamion’s command center.
Allied Star Police is available for both iPad and iPhone (retina display version).
