Okay, the title is technically incorrect as that should be Book 6 of the series A Song of Ice and Fire. After HBO’s treatment of the epic fantasy series, though, I think that more people recognize the title Game of Thrones. While that may turn off some purists, I think that what happened is still a good thing for George R.R. Martin and his legions of fans. If HBO hadn’t done what it did, the Starks, the Targaryens, the Baratheons, and the Lannisters may not be the household names they are today.

Anyhow, this year marked the release of the much awaited book A Dance with Dragons, which of course delighted fans of the series – old and new alike. Also, the season finale of the first season of Game of Thrones was one of the best things one could have watched in 2011. Add to that all the teasers and rumors we have been hearing about the second season of the TV show – it can be too much, yes?

It doesn’t stop there! If you drop by George R.R. Martin’s web site, you can find an excerpt of his latest book, The Winds of Winter. If you didn’t know it yet, this is the sixth installment in the series. The excerpt is just that – something too short to satisfy, to be honest. It features Theon Greyjoy and Stannis, among others. I just skimmed it myself, as I am not done with A Dance with Dragons, but if you are hankering for a Game of Thrones fix, this should satisfy you for a few minutes. It’s a perfect way to end the year – aside from a Game of Thrones marathon over the weekend!

Winter is coming, you say? Wait for the winds!
