With summer now upon us, it’s time to head out to the theatres and catch the latest blockbusters to hit the big screen. While Hollywood will be supplying a number of titles to look forward to, there are also a lot of anime movies coming out that are worth checking out. Below are some of the more anticipated titles of the season.
The Life of Guskou Budori (2012)
This is the second anime movie adaptation of the novel by Kenji Miyazawa, the author famous for writing Night on the Galactic Railroad. The story tells of a man (or in this case, an anthropomorphized cat) named Guskou Budori, that loses his home to natural disasters and whose younger sister was kidnapped during the chaos. He ends up joining a group of scientists in a volcano laboratory to research ways to stop more natural disasters from occurring, and hopes to one day save his sister from the one who kidnapped her.
The anime is being produced by Tezuka Productions (Black Jack, Astro Boy 1980), and will be released on July 7.
Blood-C: The Last Dark
While there were mixed reactions to the Blood-C anime series, those that enjoyed it for its blood and gore will probably want to see The Last Dark. The movie continues on from the TV series and ties up some loose ends, promising to deliver tons of action in the process. Japan Red Cross is even helping to promote the series by giving out movie posters to people who donate blood.
Blood-C: The Last Dark was released in Japanese theatres on June 2.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: The Movie 2nd A’s
Some would argue that Nanoha A’s was the best Nanoha season, and considering how well-received the first Nanoha movie was, there are high expectations for the second movie. In case you aren’t familiar with the format, each of the three Nanoha movies is based on each of the three original TV anime seasons. A’s sees Nanoha and Fate team up to fight a mysterious group of mages that are attacking and stealing magic from as many people as they can find, even going so far as to attack Nanoha without warning.
The movie is scheduled to be released on July 14.
Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki
An original work written by Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars), Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki is about a young couple, Kana and her wolf-man husband, and their half-wolf children, Ame and Yuki. When Kana’s husband suddenly dies, she takes their two children and moves to a rural town away from people. Seeing as the movie was written and directed by Hosoda, family ties and a strong maternal figure are sure to have prominent roles.
The movie is being produced by Madhouse Studios and will be released on July 21.
