First ‘Star Wars 1313′ Documentary Dives Into the Underworld

Star Wars 1313 is a very dark game. Like, mega-dark. Dark, dark, darkity darkness. LucasArts works hard to hammer that home in this short but interesting online documentary.

LucasArts likens the descent from the surface of Coruscant into the depths of level 1313 to the descent into Hell in Dante’s Inferno. There’s no new footage from the game beyond what we’ve already seen, but you’ll spot some new pieces of concept art in this 3.5 minute docu. Most interesting to me is the bit about how there are buildings covering every surface — both rising from ground level and hanging from 1313′s cavernous ceiling. The devs also talk about how the characters in this game share very little in common with the characters of the Star Wars movies, because those characters were very clearly good or bad. Every character in Star Wars 1313 straddles the line between the two, existing in a very gray space where good and bad are relative.

As excited as I get every time LucasArts lets loose a new piece of artwork or video about this game, I worry that they could be starting the hype machine too early in the game’s life cycle. All we’ve really seen of the game itself is a short clip — you know the one — where a pair of bounty hunters are attacked during their descent down to level 1313. Everything else they’ve shown is just concept art. And since no release date has been announced, we have no idea how deep LucasArts is into the game’s production. They’d be crazy not to want to release it in 2013 (for obvious reasons), but who knows if they will. There’s so much of this game yet to be seen — the underground locations, the characters, the gameplay mechanics…

Are they intentionally playing coy with us? Or do they simply have nothing else to show?

Perhaps more to the point: As awesome as this game looks (and I can’t wait to get my hands on it)… Why the heck aren’t they making Battlefront 3?
