Spider-Man’s Greatest Foes

spidey Spider Man’s Greatest Foes

Spider-Man holds the distinction of being one of the superheroes having the most villains to face.  The long list includes Alestair Smythe, Beetle, Boomerang, Burglar, Carnage, Chameleon, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Green Goblin, Hammerhead, Hobgoblin, Hydro-Man, Jackal, Kaine, Kingpin, Kraven the Hunter, Lizard, Man-Wolf, Mister Negative, Molten Man, Morbius Morlum, Mysterio, Puma, Rhino, Sandman, Scorpion, Shocker, Silvermane, Spencer Smythe, The Spider-Slayer, Spot, Swarm, Tinkerer, Tombstone, Venom, and Vulture.  He has several other lesser known foes or those who do not pose a big threat to him.

In the long list of Spider-Man foes, there are those that are quite well-known because of their exposure in the movies such as Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Sandman, and Venom.  Green Goblin made it to the first movie while Doctor Octopus was given exposure time in the second movie.  The third movie featured two villains – Sandman and Venom.  Taking their bow in the latest Spider-Man movie installment are Kraven and The Lizard.

The Green Goblin identity, as Spider-Man followers know, has been assumed by different characters in the many adventures of the superhero.  However, the most well known and the original is Norman Osborn as seen in the movie.  He derives his power from a serum he made which not only provided him highly-enhanced physical capabilities but also unfortunately drove him to insanity.  As his name would imply, he is garbed in a goblin costume with blasting pumpkin bombs as his main weapon.  He rides on a glider while spreading terror to the city.  He is credited for causing several tragedies to Spider-Man.

Doc Ock or Doctor Octopus is a scientist that became one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes.  An apparatus he was working on accidentally became fused to his body after a radiation leak.  He ended up having four very powerful mechanical arms or appendages similar to that of an octopus, thus the name.

Sandman was endowed with the power of shape-shifting with his ability to turn into sand.  Venom is a sentient alien represented by a gooey liquid-like form that needs a human host for its survival.  Its merger with Eddie Brock resulted to the villain.   Kraven’s main purpose in battling with Spider-Man is to prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world.  The Lizard is a product of a technology related to reptilian limb regeneration.

Of all Spider-Man’s foes, Doctor Doom and Green Goblin prove to be the most persistent ones.  Doctor Doom even managed to form the Sinister Six in his efforts.  Green Goblin, on the other hand, preferred to tackle Spider-Man alone.
