Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes‘ Fox Engine could be the most advanced video game engine ever made, if this in-game video is any indication.
The Internet was abuzz last week with word of footage from the new Metal Gear game. In honor of PAX 2012, Konami has released the video online, and here it is. Among the new things we learn (since last week’s unveiling) from this footage:
- Solid Snake is not the protagonist of this game. Naked Snake (aka, Big Boss before he became Big Boss) is. That should give you some idea of when this game takes place.
- Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is not Metal Gear Solid 5. MGS5 is coming, but Ground Zeroes comes first, as something of a prologue.
- The Fox Engine is utterly astounding. Kojima claims that this game will run on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but I have a hard time swallowing that after watching the video above. This is a game destined for next-gen consoles. I’d bet on it.
Seriously, the engine used for Ground Zeroes sets new standards for realistic visuals. Just watch the footage and check out those realistic weather effects, the super high-res textures, the wind billowing the soldiers’ clothes, the incredible character animations, and so on. The demo also shows that Hideo Kojima’s love of confusing plots remains firmly intact.
