I realize that by claiming to adore the Wing Commander games, I’m showing my age. But I don’t care! The man who made them is coming back to gaming, and my geeky little heart is going all pitter-patter.
On an announcement posted at robertsspaceindustries.com, legendary video game creator Chris Roberts has announced his return to gaming after 10 long years away. So where’s he been? Producing movies. Lots of ‘em. Films like Lord of War, The Punisher, and Lucky Number Slevin. He left gaming because, as he says, he “became frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision.”
At long last, he’s back where he belongs. Roberts is best remembered by gamers for creating the Wing Commander games (the latter entries of which included live action cutscenes that he also wrote and directed), Freelancer, Privateer, and Strike Commander.
His new company is Roberts Space Industries. He’s got a new game up his sleeve called Cloud Imperium, and it sounds massive. He’s going to announce it on October 10th at 10:00am Eastern at GDC Online. All we know about it at the moment is that he wants to build a detailed world that’s “more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.” Oh, and it’s a space shooter sim. But this is Chris Roberts, so that goes without saying.
Be sure to register at the Roberts Space Industries website, so you’ll get insider information about Cloud Imperium before it’s made public. In his announcement on the website, Roberts says:
My name is Chris Roberts. And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.
Well my name is Robin, and I am a Chris Roberts fanboy. Bring it!
