BioWare made it official today: Dragon Age III has been in production for the last year and a half. Its full title is Dragon Age III: Inquisition, and it’s coming next year.
BioWare’s Mark Darrah, who’s been with the company for more than fifteen years and worked on both of the first two Dragon Age games, made the announcement this morning on the official BioWare blog. As fans remember, the first game was a triumph, adored by fans, but BioWare pared down most of its complexity for Dragon Age II, which drew the ire of the faithful. This time, Darrah promises, “We’ve visited message boards, read reviews, and we’ve gone to events to have direct face-to-face conversations… We’ve been listening, and we will continue to listen.” In other words, user feedback is playing a major part in the new game’s creation.
There’s not much BioWare is willing to reveal just now, but they divulged the full title, and encouraged fans to speculate on what it suggests the game to be about. The one other piece of news is that the new game, in development for eighteen months now, is being made using DICE’s Frostbite 2 game engine. (Gamers know the Frostbite 2 engine from the popular Battlefield 3.) Darrah says they’re using Frostbite 2 “as a foundation,” adding their own code to it to allow for “a more expansive world, better visuals, more reactivity to player choices, and more customization.”
BioWare expects to release Dragon Age III: Inquisition in late 2013.
