What Does George R.R. Martin’s Extended Deal With HBO Mean?

GeorgeRRMartin031111 2 What Does George R.R. Martins Extended Deal With HBO Mean?

George R.R. Martin

Entertainment and geeky publications have been abuzz in the past several hours with news that A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has agreed to extend his deal with HBO. This only means one thing: there will be more Game of Thrones for us to enjoy!

The question is what of Game of Thrones are we to see, exactly.

One possibility is that the brilliant TV adaptation will see the book series through the end. Definitely welcome news, this is. In the beginning, we thought that there would be five books, but we know better now. With A Dance With Dragons having been released in 2011 and the titles of the last two books announced (The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring), we know that there are seven books in the series. If George R.R. Martin does not decide to extend that as well.

I don’t know about you, but this brings up concerns regarding the author’s ability to bring the series to completion. It reminds me badly of our experience with the great Robert Jordan, who passed away before he could finish The Wheel of Time. Then again, he was suffering from a rare condition, and it is fair to say that Brandon Sanderson has done the series justice. (I haven’t read the final book, though.)

Going back to George R.R. Martin and HBO

They certainly have enough material to use in the duration of the two-year extended deal, but there also have been speculation that a prequel might be under consideration. Den of Geek has noted up to twelve prequel novellas titled Tales of Dunk and Egg. These novellas are reportedly features Ser Duncan and Aegon Targaryen in Westeros 90 years before the current age (of Game of Thrones).

To be honest, I wouldn’t mind seeing Game of Thrones on TV till the book series ends. And just the same, I wouldn’t mind the prequel either. It’s a win-win for me, as long as George R.R. Martin stays hale forever.
