There’s nothing cuter than geeks in love (there are plenty of Jonathan Coulton and Kirby Krackle songs to prove it). Between Battlestar Galactica marathons and matching cosplay, geeky couples just do it better, and there’s no better celebration of geeky love than a geeky wedding.
Throwing the Best (And Geekiest) Wedding
You’ve probably seen a few of the nerdy wedding rings that make their way around the net, but what about entirely geeky weddings? From the proposal to the invitations, all the way down to the vows and the cakes, there are plenty of ways that geeky couples celebrate the things they love: pop culture, comics, movies, books, and above all each other. Here are just a few of the best geeky wedding themes:
If you’re in love with someone, they’re probably a hero in your eyes– so why not take that concept further? The characters, symbols, and colors of classic superheroes could easily be incorporated into wedding invitations, decorations, and pictures. Having the groom and the male guests wear shirts with their favorite hero’s symbol under their suits and stand with their dress shirts open in proper Superman fashion makes for an awesome and memorable shot.
Star Wars or Star Trek (or both!)
“I love you.” “I know.” From proposing with a picture of Captain Jean-Luc Picard saying “engage” to quoting Han and Leia in your vows, there are a lot of ways that these famous franchises can play a part in a geeky wedding (and make for some awesome wedding photos). Don’t forget to get a Klingon priest to hold the ceremony.
Your princess isn’t in another castle this time. Mario and Peach, Link and Zelda (It’s difficult to go alone! Take this ring!), or any of the countless couples in video games are the perfect inspiration for a wedding. Plus, bitrock and chip tunes– rock music covering or inspired by music from video games– is really great to dance to.
Zombies have been clawing their way into pop culture since Romero but even more so recently with the popularity of shows like The Walking Dead on AMC and movies like World War Z. For the horror loving geek couple a zombie wedding would be a ton of fun, especially if they’re OK with a more non-traditional ceremony. Take wedding pictures with the bride and groom fighting off infected party guests and save money on the dress by buying something cheap and zombifying it with rips and fake blood to match the theme.
Hopefully these sparked some ideas if you’re planning a geeky wedding or you’re attending one. There are plenty more ideas around the ‘net for themes and gifts. When Geeks Wed is a great blog full of nerdy love and of course sites like Pinterest and Weddinggawker are great for affordable DIY projects and inspiration.
