5 Blockbuster Movies to Geek Out over in 2014

2014 has been hotly anticipated as a year of epic blockbuster films. Lucky for you, we’ve sifted through the cheesy comedies, corny cartoons, trite bio-pics, and just plain boring romances to come up with five amazing movies that will make your geek heart soar.

1. The Giver

There are so many reasons this adaptation of Lois Lowry’s book will bring you joy. First, it’s from the early 90s (like so many things you love). Second, it’s slated to star Jeff Bridges (aka The Dude) in the role of the eponymous Giver. Third, Lowry’s novel was, for an entire generation, a revelation: an introduction to the dystopian genre that has gained perpetual popularity. Finally, the cast will include other heavy hitters like Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, and Alexander Skarsgard.

2. Divergent

Another thriller based on an excellent book, Divergent brings to the screen the series by author Veronica Roth. It’s set in a Chicago unlike any you’ve ever visited, where the citizenry is divided into five predetermined groups based on predominant personality types. The groups are Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peacefulness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (knowledgeable). Every 16-year-old must pass an aptitude test to determine his or her true home within these groups. Of course, some members are known as Divergents. They don’t quite fit in, and that’s the case for Beatrice Prior (played by Shailene Woodley), who will have to face a few adventures before she finds out where she really belongs. Another fine example of a classic Bildungsroman see through the veil of fantasy.

3. The Edge of Tomorrow

Even if you’ve grown sick of Tom Cruise and his couch-hopping antics, you might to give this film a try. It’s Quantum Leap meets The Terminator meets War of the Worlds. The mixes quantum theory with drama, action, and all the moving robo-parts you can handle. Cruise’s character will find himself stuck in a surreal, alien-occupied version of Ground Hog Day, so the film’s re-watchability factor might suffer, but who cares? Besides, it was originally intended to star Brad Pitt. Directed by Doug Liman, The Edge of Tomorrow is yet another film version of a novel. This time the book is the Japanese title, All You Need is Kill. Emily Blunt will co-star.

4. Jupiter Ascending

This film has all the makings of a smash hit.

  1. The Wachowski siblings directing.

  2. Mila Kunis. Mila Kunis oppressed and hopeless. Mila Kunis empowered and engaged in rebellion. Mila Kunis.

  3. High-falutin’ CGI making things look particularly amazing.

  4. Channing Tatum in pointy ears.

5. Lucy

Everyone loved Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow) in the 2012 adaptation of The Avengers, but while even the Hulk got his own spin off movie, no individual film was ever made for the Black Widow’s character.

Now all her fans can cheer because Johansson’s new film will see her titular character accidentally endowed with super-powers after operating as a drug mule for narcotics.

Sound like a fantasy in more ways than one? Well, watching Scarlett Johansson exercise telekinetic powers, absorb information like a computer, and eschew pain should be pretty satisfying too.

As much as you might want to wait to watch this movie in the comfort of your home, check it out in the theater first. Some of it was shot on location at the world’s fifth largest skyscraper in Taipei, so the action factor should definitely be worthy of the big screen.

Release date: August 8, 2014
