Money-Saving Geek Shopping Tips

What’s the definition of a geek again? It’s certainly evolved over time, and many will argue about what it really means to be a geek. At the end of the day, however, it’s all about being passionate about one (or two, or three) things; and usually, that passion also involves finding yourself spending way a little more than you initially intended to.

Whether you love buying the latest gadgets, or you like building up your action figure collection, being a geek certainly does not come cheaply. Being in the same position, we at ForeverGeek would like to share some of our tried and tested tips on how to geek out without having to break the bank every time.

Get a 0% interest credit card

We’d love to buy things using cash all the time if we could, right? Sometimes, though, a credit card can come in handy. It is imperative, however, that you get the appropriate credit card, something that will not kill you in interest and other fees. There are many 0% interest credit card offers out there, which will be perfect for big purchases (home 3D printer, anyone?).

In order to make things easier for you to determine which cards will suit you, make sure you understand your credit score/rating. In this regard, you can use tools such as  credit card comparison expert TotallyMoney.com’s free credit checking tool. By doing so, you can ensure that you don’t face unnecessary issues down the road.

Buy secondhand

There are some things you should never buy secondhand (like a mattress, for example), but when it comes to comic books, action figures, Blu-ray disks, and video games, buying secondhand can save you a lot of money. Even when it comes to laptops and tablets, officially refurbished items will save you a lot of money. Speaking from experience, buying a refurbished MacBook, is one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Take advantage of sales

Sales are everywhere – you just have to find them. And, if you happen to have some extra cash, or you have a good credit standing on your card, you should just go ahead and buy whatever you want (and can afford) on sale. While you may not need the item(s) at the moment, you may want it at a later point, and if you buy on sale, you’ll at least save money.

Be on the lookout for trade-in promos

Not too long ago, I was able to buy an external battery pack for my iPhone for half the price simply because they had a trade-in promo. I had wanted one for a while, but the $100 price tag put me off, so I had bought a cheap China-made pack for less than $10. While I had no plans of buying a new one (I had had the China one for a couple of weeks), when I saw the trade-in promo, I went for it, ending up with a $50 saving.

As you can see, there are ways you can indulge your geekiness without having to spend more than you should. What are your own strategies to do so? Share them in the comments.
