Putting Meta in Gaming: Mobile Games for Those Who Can’t Do Just One Thing at a Time

The idea for this post came to me when I realized that, many times, I would be watching something on TV and playing on the iPad at the same time. (Okay, it was pointed out to me.)

It was not long before I also realized that what I was watching sometimes influenced the game I wanted to play. So yeah, meta gaming is what came to mind. Whether that term is for real or just made up, I think it’s appropriate for this experience.

Here are some meta gaming ideas for when you don’t have anything better to do. Or just because you can.

Ultimate meta gaming – Assassin’s Creed: Pirates and Black Sails/Crossbones

Assassin’s Creed: Pirates is a recent addition to the list of my go-to games, and because of some difficult missions, I find myself not playing it as much as I play other games. Every time I watch Crossbones or Black Sails, however, I just can’t fight the urge to play Pirates.

In case you haven’t heard of the game, here’s video review.

As for Crossbones and Black Sails, the former has John effin’ Malkovich as Blackbeard (nothing more needs to be said), while the latter is the pirate version of Spartacus perhaps, but it blows Spartacus out of the water in terms of the story.

Pirate game and pirate TV shows. Yup. Meta gaming at its best. Hard to multitask effectively, though. Either you get your ship blown to pieces, or you miss out on some salient plot points.

Get Assassin’s Creed: Pirates.

Injustice: Gods Among Us and practically any superhero movie/TV series

Injustice: Gods Among Us is my current addiction, as you may already know, and it’s the perfect game to play while watching any DC movie, especially those direct-to-video films.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of the game, and you’ve built up your characters, it’s rather easy to play, so multitasking is not an issue as with the previous game. The fun lies in you thinking about the backstory of the characters as you play with them. You might even end up creating unique conversations/exchanges between them as they bash each other’s faces.

Skyforce or Flight Control HD while on a plane

Who doesn’t like doing other things during a flight? Unless you can sleep like a log anywhere, you probably read, watch a movie, or play a game in-flight. What’s the perfect meta gaming experience while flying?

You got it: Skyforce or Flight Control HD.

I was flying to Singapore a couple of years ago when I heard my seatmate – who was playing on the iPad – say, “We’re gonna crash”, or something like that. Yeah, I was concerned. Until I saw he was playing Flight Control HD (where you have to manage loads of planes and make sure they land safely without crashing into each other). True story.

Get Skyforce.
Get Flight Control HD.

Real Racing while in a cab…

…with a manic driver at the wheel. I’m not saying that all cab drivers are maniacs, but I sure have had my share of those that think they’re Michael Schumacher. And during those times, what better game to play on your phone than Real Racing?

Of course, it’s better if you’ve got hands as steady as a surgeon’s if you don’t want to crash. Same thing with your cab driver…

Real Racing for Android.

Tycoon games while in a board meeting

This last meta gaming example may be a stretch, but think about it. People who go to board (or any business) meeting want to be tycoons deep inside. However, we know just how fun those meetings can be. So why not help kill time so you don’t die of boredom with a tycoon game?

There is no lack of tycoon games out there, with RollerCoaster Tycoon first coming to mind. Here’s a video showing 5 of the (supposedly) best tycoon games of all time.

You might not be in the amusement park business, but I’m sure the game will give you lots of fun times, as opposed to listening to your colleagues drone on…

So what do you think about meta gaming? What other game-activity pairing can you think of? Let me know in the comments!
