Web 2.0 Review: Digg

Web 2.0 Review: Digg

For hundreds of years news has been chosen by appointed journalists and the readers were forced to put up with it with very little input. Digg is changing that. This service allows the users to choose which news is the best. The advantages of user-driven news websites such as Digg are that you get the chance to find links and news that otherwise may not have been exposed. Digg Digg first appeared in late 2004 as a beta, and was programmed by Owne Byrne but publicized by Kevin Rose. Digg’s success was first apparent when a story about Paris Hilton’s cell phone being hacked appeared there. Since then digg’s success Read more »

2 Cool Things You can do with Growl on OS X

2 Cool Things You can do with Growl on OS X

For those of you who are Mac-heads like myself, I’ve found a great, lightweight, background application that increases the OS X experience. That application is called Growl. I know, I know, Growl has been around for a while but there are many people who don’t know about it. Growl works like this, once it’s installed there is a System Preference panel which allows you to change the settings. Many developers build their applications to work natively with Growl, as can be seen here in this list. Download Growl before doing any of these steps, here. Notifications like this appear in the top right of your screen using Growl 1. Find Read more »

Pixar Takeover Conference Call

Pixar Takeover Conference Call

As everyone knows by now, Pixar has been taken over by Disney. I found out because every blog I read had something to say about it. The conference call features Steve Jobs, Bob Iger, and various other figures. The total call runs for over 30 minutes. Not much else to say. Read more »

Intel Loses some Major Market Share

Intel Loses some Major Market Share

C|Net is reporting that Intel lost some major market share in their fourth quarter of 2005. Their market share dropped 11% from 64.4% to 53.3%. And that was only one quarter! This is obviously bad news for Intel, if it was to continue at that rate for the rest of the year, by 2007 they would only have 7% market share. Now, obviously that’s going to an extreme, but it’s interesting to think about. Read more »

Chinese Man Impossible to Photograph

Chinese Man Impossible to Photograph

6 days ago, a Chinese police photographer ran into a very strange problem. A man had come in to get a picture for his ID taken, but when they tried to take a picture of him, no image would show up in the camera. The staff proceeded to check the camera and check to see if he was wearing any interfering devices. The scariest part was that when they tried to take pictures of other people in the room, the camera worked perfectly. Read more »

Using Javascript to Create a Picture Gallery

Using Javascript to Create a Picture Gallery

Litebox JS is a small web app written in Javascript and CSS to create an online photo gallery, so that when you click an image it comes up with a transparent type of window that contains the picture you clicked on. You can use it for your personal pictures, it’s easy to setup, and like the page says it works in all modern browses. The code is very small, and it won’t hurt your bandwidth bill. Read more »

Intel Macs can Run Windows

Intel Macs can Run Windows

Yesterday, Apple announced two new Macintosh computers that run using Intel processors. The two were the iMac and the MacBook Pro. The announcements excited many dedicated Apple fans who have been waiting for a major update to the mobile pro line for years. The products were introduced by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computers, and he explained how the newer models were 2x – 4x faster than their predecessors. What wasn’t mentioned during the keynote was whether or not users would be able to run Windows on their Macintosh. Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple commented on the whole situation: “That’s fine with us. We don’t Read more »

Track your Packages using Google Maps

Ever since last year, we’ve been seeing new Google Maps services appear nearly everywhere you turn. The latest one, is a useful tool that tracks your packages from UPS, USPS and FedEx (I don’t want to hear any complaining in the comments that there’s no DHL). All you do is stick in your tracking numbers, and it brings up a little marker of where your package is at that moment. The site incorporates small ajax technologies here and there, and overall works pretty well. Read more »

Expected Product Announcements for MacWorld '06

Apple is hosting it’s annual MacWorld conference today, where it is expected to release some Macs that use Intel processers, along with other products. Kevin Rose, former TechTV host, and digg.com founder has posted on his blog information that he says he has “heard”. Kevin Rose’s last prediction about the iPod nano was correct, and the information that he is giving out now is probably correct because of the friends he made while working at TechTV. These are his predictions: 15″ intel Macbook – order tomorrow, ships Feb (thinner, dual core) iPod FM receiver iWork/Life ’06 New remote of some type Photocasting (iPhoto) OS X.4.4 w/new widgets These predictions are Read more »

Starz to Make Content Downloadable

Starz Entertainment is set to release a $9.99 subscription service that will allow subscribers to download content to watch on their portable video players, computers, and televisions. This subscription service, Vongo, is following in the footsteps of ABC, NBC, and CBS. Starz already offers a similar service with RealNetworks, but the service does not allow you to play the files on your portable music player. This service may become popular because of the lower cost media players that are supposed to appear at CES (Consumer Electronics Show). The service will contain 800 features films, but unfourtunately, Vongo will not work with iPods. You can test out a beta version right Read more »
