Half-Life: the story

If you’re a Half-Life fan and loved the story, but had niggling questions about the backstory, the Half-Life saga story guide should clear several doubts that you have. In it, Chan Karunamuni explains the events and history of the Half-Life world. It seems a G-man sighting gallery is also in the works – that will be cool because I’ve only seen the G-man 2 times in Half-Life 2. Via Jozsef Sasvari (on IM). Read more »

Opera 7.60 Preview 3 for Windows

Opera 7.60 Preview 3 for Windows

Opera Software has released Opera 7.60 Preview 3 for Windows for download. I took a quick spin with it to see what new features they’ve added. Granted, I am a big Firefox fan, but I’m not so closed in my belief that Firefox rocks (which it does) that I can’t recognize the goodness in other browsers. Opera, particularly, is one other browser that I’m very fond of (and I’d imagine, Safari as well, but I don’t have a Mac). Here’s a quick look at what to expect in the upcoming Opera 7.60 RSS It’s interesting to see how similar an approach both Opera and Firefox have taken towards RSS feeds. Read more »

Firefox and Thunderbird datasheets

The Spread Firefox have been hard at work and the latest post at Spread Firefox points to 2 datasheets, one each for Firefox and Thunderbird, that you can give to people interested in finding out more about them. Very nicely done. If I were still studying I’d print out a few copies and stick them around my campus canteens. Read more »

BitTorrent – wear it if you love it

BitTorrent – wear it if you love it

Now here’s a nice BitTorrent T-Shirt. It’s going to set you back $14.95, but I think it’s money well spent from all that money you saved downloading illegal music, movies, games and pr0n. Heh. If you’re asking what BitTorrent is, you have much to learn you geek wannabe. But since we are nice people at Forever Geek, we won’t call you n00b or scream at you to RTFM. Oh no wait, you should RTFM – check out Brian’s BitTorrent FAQ (specifically the answer to “What is BitTorrent?“). Other geeks may be interested in the BitTorrent protocol specification (explains lots of neat stuff like super-seeding, snubbing, and other terminology). Read more »

Showing actual write speed in Nero

Showing actual write speed in Nero

If you use Nero Burning ROM, you’d notice that the write speed that’s displayed when burning stuff is constant at the write speed you selected. Well, you can change it so that it updates to show the actual write speed in (almost) real-time if you are open to simple registry “hacking”. Yes, we are such geeks to want to sit there staring at the write speed going up (yay!) and down (hiss!). Unfortunately, I only hit 8.1x on my new TDK DVD-writer (media: Sony 4x DVD+R, RICOHJPNR01). You can follow the instructions in the thread, or copy and paste the following code into a .reg file and run it. Windows Read more »

Firefox logo tweaked

Firefox logo tweaked

The Mozilla Firefox logo just got furrier in recent nightly builds. Here’s the normal and the new tweaked version in a “before and after” graphic: The nose also has more detail and the colors seem to be more washed out compared to the deeper tones of the original. Like these small tweaks? I certainly do. Read more »

iPodDownload iTunes plugin – extract music from your iPod

Sure we have all read Bring your iPod to life by killing auto-sync, the premier treatise on the ins and outs of the Auto-sync feature in iTunes. We all know how to turn off auto-sync if necessary. And we also know how to copy music from an iPod (there are many ways). Now there is an iTunes plugin, iPodDownload, that let’s you download tracks from your iPod to your iTunes library. How? It simply displays the songs in your iPod in an “iPod Download” source and allows you to drag and drop tracks to your music library. Neat trick. The only catch (if it is a catch at all) is Read more »

Girls' Guide to Geek Guys

Geeks always need a little loving. After all we are only human under our pasty white skin and despite of our highly evolved brains. Here’re 2 sacred guides (one for each gender) that you can share with friends of the opposite sex to gently prod them towards the light – A Girl’s Guide to Geek Guys and it’s counterpart, The Guy’s Guide to Geek Girls. They are generally available. Other women will tend not to steal them. They can fix things. Your parents will love them. They’re smart. Read more »
