Taking some inspiration perhaps from Apple’s old round mouse, this Greenhouse one is pretty much the same, except it’s texture is similar to a golf ball’s (which might make it uncomfortable after a while), and has the obligatory scroll wheel.

I think the device would have had more appeal if a bit more care had been put into the end details of the mouse pad. That plastic flag makes it look…. well, in a word, cheap. Though I guess that for a golf fan, it would be a nice thing to have, or a nice thing to receive as an offer.

When the first laptops started being sold, it was common to see several add-on products that would improve or increase their functionality. Nowadays there are all sorts of things you can plug in via USB, but back then it was all done through the PCMCIA slot.

This new addon takes advantage of PCIexpress to bring great 3D performance to laptops without gaming-oriented graphics card and 5.1 audio surround. The graphics card is an Nvidia 8600GT, which should be enough for more gamers.

As detailed as the original article is they failed to mention the price, nor can I find it on Asus’ announcement. So I guess we’ll have to wait a few more days to find out how much they will be selling it for.

There aren’t many office-related tasks you can do nowadays with a Google online program. The latest iteration of their unnamed online software package is Google Sites. A service that has been available for a while for companies, but never for the general product.

Google Sites is an online software that allows you to create websites in a matter of seconds by choosing from a pre-made template, and deciding who may visit the website and what content, or what type of content you can publish on each page.

I’ll be blunt, I think that the default templates could be much nicer than they currently are. If a less-famous company was releasing a similar service with templates such as this one they would certainly be criticized for it, still, the integration with Google Calendar, and consequently other Google services, like Picasa, make this online software worthwhile.

In one of the examples shown in the homepage, you can see an example Project homepage, and I do think that is certainly one of the better uses for it.

Steve Ballmer recently joined his “former” Microsoft partner, Bill Gates, in the “food being thrown at you” list. While Bill Gates’ pie-in-the-face is largely considered to be something fun, the egg bombardment were not. Despite the missing all of the throws, he made the media, and consequently the world, realize about Microsoft’s and Hungary’s wrongdoings:

Microsoft has midterm contracts with the state in Hungary for “way cheaper than from the store” Campus-licences. This costs billions (in HUF, 160HUF=1USD) for the state and makes students stuck in the Microsoft-world, not knowing Linux etc.

Just goes to show how Microsoft remains top-gun in the Operating System market. I’m certain that Hungary aren’t the first, nor the last, country with similar contracts with Microsoft. You can watch the original video on Gizmodo.

All of our younger readers, and me, will be happy to hear that Ninty has just announced the newest Pokemon game to accompany the first DS version. And we all know what that means… a new legendary Pokemon!

The latest Pokemon to be added to the ever growing Pokedex is called Giratina and it’s… weird. It’s like an armored slug with tentacles and spikes, oh wait, I think I just perfectly described it. The game will be released this fall in Japan, and hopefully near or before Christmas for the rest of the world.

If you’re a Pokemon fan, own a DS, and still haven’t gotten your hands on the newest ones, then this should be the perfect opportunity to do so. Sure, the game is more of the same, but it’s the best iteration so far. Plus, being American/European has great advantages like being able to trade Pokemons named Pikachu for rare or legendary Japanese ones (they get them simply for the sake of different letters).

Now you know readers, if you own Ruby or Diamond, farm those Pikachus and do thorough searches in the trade channel.

So it was only a matter of time before you saw me popping up a GTA 4-related article.

So without further a do, and after the Tsunami of news (and most people who were interested in the game have played it for more than a couple of days) I bring you the world’s most beloved <strike>troll</strike> game reviewer his opinion on one of the year’s biggest games.

Back when Microsoft was releasing the very first versions of Vista, I was one of the few who managed to land a spot in their team, and as such, I helped test and suggested, or sponsored, a few changes I happened to agree with. Thankfully, most of them were implemented, and all, or most beta testers were happy to see that despite the few bumps and contradictions made on some of the builds, the end product ended up pleasing most of us.

But it looks like not all Beta testers have the same luck. Last September Microsoft launched the first beta for the next Windows Live client which brought a few useful features to the client, but nothing revolutionary. Features wise, Live Messenger is a few generations behind other clients like Yahoo Messenger and Trillian. And some features we take for granted in most IMs like Tabbed chatting.

“The first Windows Live Messenger 9.0 Beta build was released in November 2007. The release brought the ability to sign into Messenger from up to four computers at once, the ability to choose customized sounds for your sign-in and for your contacts, URLs in Personal Status Messages, and Animated Display Pictures. However, features requested across the many Messenger programs such as Tabbed Conversations and the ability to decline a group conversation invite were nowhere to be seen.”

Microsoft aims to become the most popular IM client, but it saddens me to see them giving the testers the silent treatment. If they want to have limited Beta testing periods, for a select few users, to gain better PR and help improve the product doesn’t this treatment contradict what Beta testing should be about?

Through the last couple of days Rare has pulled the curtains and unveiled some details about the latest iteration of the very popular Banjoo-Kazooie platformer franchise.

The game seems to be closed inside tower levels, where players will be constricted by walls, but will have access to an immensely large level to explorer and complete each challenge. The new “thing” of this Banjo Kazooie is vehicle construction. You’ll be able to build wacky vehicles that can drive, jump and even fly over obstacles. And that should add some depth to the rather plain vehicle sections that most modern platformers include.

If there’s one movie that Anime fans have always wanted to see brought to Hollywood, that movie would be the Dragonball one. After countless years of rumors, attempts, beginnings, teaser images. We finally have something a bit more “physical” than a CGI-render of Piccolo. This time we have a picture of the actor playing out the role of the main hero, Goku, in an actual teaser poster taken from Shonen Jump.

It actually looks decent. The costume isn’t too modern, nor too traditional, and I think that the hair stylists did a great job in recreating Goku’s gravity defying hairstyle.

Maybe it’s just my inner fanboy speaking for actually seeing something being produced and shown to the fans. Even if this ends up being the biggest flop ever, I’ll certainly be on the front lines of the theaters.

Yesterday we showed you the new HTC Diamond through a very bad picture that didn’t show the device in it’s full fledged glory.

Engadget recently had the opportunity to play a bit with the new Touch and they were quite happy with it, particularly with the VGA screen which is twice as many pixels as most PDAs in the market today. And although I didn’t mention this enough yesterday, this is definitely the best looking Windows Mobile PDA I’ve ever seen. It’s slick, shinny and the interface since much nicer, which is great because it goes perfectly with the device.

And now a video of the device in action:

Another feature that wasn’t mentioned yesterday was that the device has, like the iPhone, has an accelerometer that allows it to act differently depending on the movements you make with the device. You can see a video of the accelerometer in action at the original article.

Yesterday Nine Inch Nails joined the group of popular bands that are releasing their latest albums online for free, or close to that. The band dedicated the album to the fans, who have supported them throughout the years, and have also announced that a physical version of the album will be available on CD and Vinyl in July.

Even though I’ve never listened to any albums of theirs before, only assorted singles, I found the album surprisingly good with a nice variety of songs and themes. Some are lyrical, others are more instrumental, others are more computerized, but overall, it’s an above average album and I recommend it to anyone who likes alternative/industrial rock.

You can download it from Nine Inch Nail’s official website, simply by entering your e-mail to get the link.

Even though what I enjoy most about WoW is the Player VS Player part of the game, I have found myself doing a lot more PVE (Player versus Environment).

The problem I found with switching from one to the other is that while on PVP you have resilience and crit, on PVE you have stats, haste, expertise, etc. And all of those affect your damage differently, and depending on the stat, it might make a world of difference.

Thankfully, I found a website that gives the exact answers to what should be your next upgrades, and you’ll be surprised to find out how many great items you can get without the need of endgame raiding. For example, for a Plate-wearing damage dealer, such as myself, I discovered that the second best DPS belt in the game can be crafted by blacksmiths, and the mats aren’t impossible to acquire. In fact, they’re quite easy.

If you are interested in boosting your DPS in World of Warcraft you’ll find that maxdps.com is an excellent resource and obligatory bookmark.

In the world of Windows Mobile Cellphones, HTC is seen as possible the largest or most influential company. Here, in Portugal, it’s rare to see someone with a Windows cellphone that isn’t HTC. Today they unveiled the latest model in their new Touch brand, the Diamond.

The first HTC Touch was largely consider by many the Microsoft answer to the iPhone. Although it didn’t live up to the hype of Apple’s device, it was an above average device, and since Apple isn’t in any hurry to unveil the highly anticipated 3G model, now is a great time to announce a new device.

Here are the Diamond’s specifications:

    *  Windows Mobile 6.1
* VGA Screen
* Quad-band HSDPA 7.2
* One-touch navigation, including single-finger dialing
* An accelerometer that rotates pictures as you rotate the phone
* One-touch music playback with an animated music browser
* A heavily-animated weather forecast app
* Full-featured desktop-like web browser (Opera) with zoom-in tech that actually reformats to fit the screen upon zoom, although Microsoft promises IE 6 coming soon for it
* Youtube app and content playback
* Available in June in Europe via Orange and the “rest of the world” sometime later
* Orange music store, games, wallpapers, and ringtone downloads
* Orange mobile TV with up to 61 channels
* No normal headphone jack – gotta use HTC’s proprietary USB dongle
* “Better battery life” than their other devices (although it uses a smaller battery than the Touch – we’ll keep our eye on this) — will offer a bigger battery at a later time for those who are experiencing battery life issues
* No pricing info just yet

This mobile device won’t having me running to the shelves to purchase it, but it’s certainly better to see a sophisticated device getting a sophisticated look, rather than the “plastic look” most Windows Mobile devices have.

Team Fortress 2 was one of the online gaming franchises that received the most uplifting facelift yet. The game was thoroughly balanced, the comedy factor was increased, and a few new game modes were enabled, so you weren’t always running after flags all the time.

With this weekend, Valve decided to promote it’s flagship multiplayer game by allowing players to experience it fully for 2 days, which not only debut a new map/mod called Goldrush, but also debut the new unlockable items for the Medic class which become available when 30/60 or 90% of the game’s achievements are unlocked.

I logged in to play the game just a shortwhile ago and I have to say they weren’t the funnest games I’ve played so far. On the server I was on, a lot of players end up switching to the Heavy class in order to counter the exaggerated number of doctors on the opposing team. In any case, if you ever wanted to give this game a try, tomorrow is the right day to do so.

Now you’re telling us XP support will not end, and we’ll continue to receive security and bug fixes and they’ll continue to provide support for companies who acquired extended support contracts with M$.

This means that Microsoft might continue to provide updates and support for XP until 2009

AVG is one of those programs that slowly grew into people’s hard drives. It was the first free anti-virus software I heard of, but it wasn’t adopted very much because people consider their competitor’s products much better.

As time went by, Grisoft greatly improved their product that went from a very basic anti-virus that provided protection only the simplest, or most obvious, of viruses to a much more solid security program that does most of the things Norton or any other’s AV programs do without consuming 20% (or more) of your computer resources.

Version 8 now includes built-in protection against Trojan horses. Although I still prefer to use a dedicated program like Spybot for that type of malware, this should help protect my friend’s/family’s computers against these annoying programs that seriously gimp their PC’s performance and compromise their security.

If you are looking for a lightweight Anti-Virus I recommend you try out AVG 8 free, and then purchase one of their software packages with added security if you like it.

You can download it from here.

Messenger for Mac is largely considered the “bastard” child of one of the world’s most used IMs. Although other messengers are already several steps ahead with video and audio-chat support, Microsoft has decided time, and time again, to leave these features exclusive for their Windows desktop version.

This new version allows you to use the Office Communications Server 2007 for video audio/chat, but I’m guessing that very few of you will ever use that service. On the other hand, some new features which you are likely to use include: editing your contact’s names, and searching for contacts using the new search field on the contact list.

The blog entry regarding this new version announces that they will be including AV chat support as soon as possible. If they want to gain a respectable number of users from the Mac community they’d better fix some of the issues the program has and bring the features which users already expect from any modern IM.

If you’re interested, you can download the new version from here.

It’s been a long time in the making, there was even an unofficial SP3 made by fans, due to popular demand, but it’s finally here. The last major upgrade we’ll ever receive for our beloved, or at least tolerable, Windows XPs.

Unlike Sp2, this upgrade doesn’t bring as many changes to the interface, as most things are done under the hood. It features a very large amount of bug fixes, improves connectivity a bit, but only large corporations will really take advantage of that.

Amazingly, I was unable to find a dedicated page for SP3 to give you more details, but essentially that’s what you’ll find. It’s sad to see Microsoft through away an Operating System like XP, which is quite stable and efficient, to bring some young and “immature” OS like Vista.

You can download the Stand-alone installer for SP3 from here, or get it from Windows Update (although localized versions will probably have to wait a bit longer).

If any of you install SP3, feel free to share your opinions/experiences with us.

This new laptop will have either an 8.9″ or a 10″ LED lit LCD screen, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 80GB of HDD, 1GB of RAM and a 1.3 Megapixel camera. Compared to the Asus, it has much more capacity, but on the other hand, it uses a standard hard drive.

It will come with Windows XP pre-loaded, so it will at the very best, be as cheap as the Asus EEE. Even so, for these devices, I think that a flash-based hard drive is a much better choice.

It’s the iPod vs iPod Nano battle again, except this time they are bigger machines fighting for domination. Given how well the Nano sold, I think it’s safe to say that for portable devices, people will choose the device with the best portability. But I don’t doubt for a single second that this MSI will also sell well, if it’s priced correctly.

Some of our young readers probably don’t know what IRC is, but in short, it was a chat program where people could join channels and chat regarding it’s theme. Most channels were for small groups of friends, but eventually groups emerged to chat about common interests.

In an attempt to bring back this old/new type of social-networking, Microsoft is beta testing a new Live Messenger functionality called “Messenger Groups“.

Groups allows you to create a virtual chatroom that will always be available for those who wish to join it, or those you wish to invite. You’re not obligated to join it, but getting in is as easy and double clicking a contact on your friend list.

I tried out this new functionality just now with a few friends, and it works well enough. It’s not perfect, but good enough for small groups of friends.

I don’t see this generating large social communities, because it seems much better suited for small groups. And since you can only have two moderators at one time (the creator and the administrator), it would be almost impossible to moderate a large group of people.

This is definitely a step in the right direction, and if it evolves properly, it could very well be the thing that sets Messenger apart from all of the other IMs out there. I, for one, am happy to see Microsoft developing something for it’s messaging client that doesn’t focus on bringing them more income, or annoying it’s users (nudges anyone?).

Taking a page from Apple’s iMac, this computer includes everything you’d expect to find in a bulky box besides (or underneath) the monitor, inside the monitor itself.

Here are the machine’s specifications:

this 16” (1366×768 ) wide PC features an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T8100 (2.1GHz) with 2GB of RAM (Max 4GB), 250GB of SATA HDD, an Intel X3100 graphic chipset, Wifi B/G, and Bluetooth.

It’s not an ideal machine for games since it does not include a very powerful graphics card. It is however ideal for company receptions, where looks matter, or for people who want a simple Windows computer but don’t want to deal with the wire-clutter that comes with it.

The post that had these dates was brought down shortly afterwards, so I reckon it’s safe to say that these dates are credible.

Even so, no matter how I look at it, it makes little, if any, sense at all to release the latest major update to the world’s most used Operating System, so close to the release date of Vista SP1, which they are having enough problems with.

Here are the specifications:

- Intel Core 2 Duo running up to 2.5GHz (T9300) with base models using the T8100 (2.1GHz)
- Intel PM965 Express Chipset
- Supports up to 4GB of DDR2 667MHz SDRAM
- Built in 4 Altec Lansing speakers (with 1 subwoofer)
- Support for Dolby Home Theater
- HDMI out
- DVI out
- e-SATA out

Given that it comes from Asus, which is a quality, trustworthy brand, I’d say that this is probably one of the best desktop replacements you can get. But it’s a shame that they couldn’t get an Nvidia or Ati in it.

I reckon that they needed the extra room for the hard-drive and to keep the laptop’s price down, but if that weren’t the case, this laptop would probably beat many modern desktops today.

Still, it was smart of Asus to release this laptop now, rather than later, because according to the ongoing rumors, Apple should be updating it’s laptop lineup with brand new models very soon.

In what seems like a late April’s Fools joke, Namco and Lucas Arts somehow got together and decided to bring the best two light saber fighters from the Star Wars universe to their latest version of the popular medieval beat-em-up: Soul Calibur.

Besides being able with the two incredibly popular characters you’ll also be able to fight in at least one scene from the original movies: the Death Star. With this said, it’s safe to say that any self-respecting fan of Lucas Art’s high-tech milking cow will surely pick this game up, as it should provide much better action sequences than all of the previous first/third person adventures from them.

The House of the Dead franchise is a very famous and entertaining franchise from the Sega software house. Thanks to it’s success it spawned various offsprings and sequels, each one more awkward than the last. And this one is the most awkward of all.

English of the Dead is a modified House of the Dead in which you have to type the missing letters on some english words that are pronounced by the console and written in a square (in Japanese of course).

It even has a trailer, as wacky as most Japanese game trailers are, with some memorable quotes and moments like the one just in the beginning:

“Come on, friend.
Write or I’ll bite!”

Regardless of how good or bad this game ends up being, the amusing trailer certainly lit up my day.

Like most USB cellphones of this kind, it will allow you to use Skype and make phonecalls as you normally would, rather than by using Vista’s menus (I wonder how weird that will feel?).

I hope that this device is an extra and not a necessity. It would be <strike>rather</strike> completely silly having to carry an extra phone to make calls with your cellphone.

Even though I’m not a big fan of Vista it’s a bit silly that while we are still running custom Linux builds, or tweaked versions of Windows CE and Mac OS X, the Japanese cellphones are already capable of running Vista, which is one of the most demanding operative systems ever.

This time we have NEC announcing it’s own device to compete with Sharp’s D4 (which we featured here yesterday), and just like the D4, this device also uses Intel’s latest Atom processor.

However unlike Sharp’s device, we do not know much about the NEC LUI cellphone, other than it’s screen size: 4.1”, it’s weight: 250g, and it’s price: (approximately) $2,123.

If you are interested, the original article has a nice gallery with many pictures of this new device.

I wonder if we can even call it a phone, when it runs Vista on it. Even though Intel’s new Atom processors, which are aimed at the handheld market, aren’t ready for prime time yet, that didn’t stop Sharp from lifting the curtains on the new device.

The Sharp-made D4 uses Intel’s Centrino Atom platform to run Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. It has a 1.33GHz Atom Z520 on board, along with 1GB of 533MHz DDR 2 memory and a 40GB 1.8in hard drive.

The screen, despite only having 5″ has a surprisingly big resolution: 1024 x 600. Other than that the device has all the other features we are used to seeing in most medium to high-end cellphones: Bluetooth, Wifi, 2 Mp camera, Micro SD slot and TV tuner (although you probably can’t use it outside of Japan and a couple of other key countries).

The device will cost ¥128,600/$1275 (ouch!) and you’ll need to sign a ¥1600/$16 per-month contract for two years with the carrier.

It’s nice to see that our technologies make these sort of devices possible, but wouldn’t it be better to see software better suited to our devices, than our devices becoming better suited to our hardware?

Asus have recently announced a new Mini PC with powerful specifications. Despite being a small-form computer, it can surely compete with a lot of other PCs out there. Whether it’s because of it’s HDMI output, or the 7.1 audio, this computer gives you more than one reason to pick it up.

This new Essentio CS5110 will come with Core 2 Duos or slightly older processors (on cheaper models), supports up to 4GB of RAM, has a slot-in Blu-Ray drive or a DVD multi-drive and even has room to fit an Nvidia chip onboard, the MXM MN8600M GT 256M. It won’t be enough to play Crysis at a decent framerate, but it can certainly handle most modern games.

Regardless of what devices they are releasing, Asus seem to be at an all-time high. Their motherboards are some of the best, and their laptops are some of the most reliable (they even assemble (or assembled) the ever popular Apple Macbooks, and their ultra-small (and cheap) EEE laptop is having tremendous success. So if you’re picking a similar device to this one, the time has never been better than now.

Although most users don’t use encryption for their personal files, server admins will be happy to hear that the newest Seagate Cheetah hard drives come with self-encrypting technology. Meaning that the data stored on the disk will always be encrypted whether you’re using the hard-drive, removing it from a server, or retiring it.

Here are the characteristics of these new hard drives:

Available in capacities of 450GB, 300GB, and 147GB, the Cheetah 15K.6 family includes Seagate PowerTrim™ technology which dynamically optimizes drive power consumption at all levels of activity. The Cheetah 15K.6 FDE family offers the highest 3.5-inch hard drive reliability in the industry at 1.6 million hours MTBF (0.55% AFR), a choice of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) or Fibre Channel (FC) interfaces, and a five-year limited warranty. The Cheetah 15K.6 FDE drive is shipping to OEM suppliers this quarter.

Given that all the encryption is done on-the-fly, with almost no impact in performance, these new hard-drives will certainly become must-have peripherals for many servers which hold sensitive information.

Bioshock takes a great game engine (Unreal’s), and incredible artistic direction that successfully recreated a vintage/sci-fi city from the 1940’s and a great storyline to bring us the best game I’ve played in a very long time.

Most story based first person shooters are disappointing. Over the years the genre evolved from a simple, yet fun, “you’re a good guy, they’re bad guys” script that simply pointed you in the direction of enemies, to much more complex stories that bring the game closer to a roleplaying experience, rather than mindless action.

The System Shock games were one of the very few (back in the day) that gave us an unique and engaging storyline, without sacrificing too many gameplay aspects. Bioshock continues to follow the tradition set by System Shock, but in a completely different environment, and simpler, though somewhat over-powered “evolution” system.

Gameplay: 4 out of 5

Most modern shoot-em-ups have some perks that distinguish them one from the other. If Half-life’s is the Gravity Gun, and Portal’s is, well, the Portal Gun, then Bioshock’s is Plasmids.

Plasmids allow you character to obtain certain characteristics that do many things from that go from burning his enemies, to cracking vaults and security cameras.

These Plasmids give you customization options which change your gameplay, but as you progress, you’ll start to feel much more like a demi-God rather than a normal person. Unlike System Shock where you had to choose between being a better fighter, or a better technician, in Bioshock you are able to be good at both things, and if you decide to take the path of “evil” (more on that later), then you’ll be just as good at killing enemies just as you are in converting enemy turrets to your side.

The game would have certainly been harder and possibly a bit less enjoyable for some people, if they decided to restrict the upgrade options. On the other hand, it would have increased the game’s replay value which is, unfortunately, very low.

Storyline: 4.5 out of 5

The game’s story is one of the game’s best aspects. The story seems mysterious at first, then predictable, then surprising, and finally, rewarding.

Like most games nowadays, you are given a choice between “good” and “evil”. Although the choice you make does not change the storyline too much, it certainly changes your gameplay.

For people who are only thinking of playing the game once I recommend you choose the “evil” path. Although the ending is different, the general experience will be more enjoyable.

As you quickly learn when you step into the game, the whole society there was corrupted by the same “Plasmids” I referred to before. People became addicted to them as they do to drugs in real life (although in a smaller scale) and eventually drove themselves to misery.

You only meet a handful of less mentally-ill characters through your journey, but all of them are unique enough to make it worthwhile. As a small side note, I found it a bit disappointing that we were not given the option to meet more characters or have a better idea of how the economy, or the society, in the city worked.

The only things we know about the environment will be learned from the character’s radios, or from recorded messages which are spread throughout the game. Although those messages enrich the storyline, I would have preferred to have more “direct interactivity” with the characters I heard on the recordings rather than only being able to listen to them all the time.

If it were not for the excellent plot twists, I would have rated the storyline a point lower.

Presentation: 4.1 out of 5

The first let’s say, 10% of the game, are perhaps some of the most impressive moments you’ll find in a modern fps. The 0.1 points come from those first moments. Unfortunately, the rest of the game does very little to raise the presentation value, but that isn’t a bad thing really, because the game looks and feels great.

The best way to describe the environment is as a vintage sci-fi one. Although there are some very impressive devices and technologies, they all have a 1940’s look about them. Whether they are the door’s with code locks, or the vintage “ka-ching!” cash registers.

The art team took no second measures in reproducing the look from that era, and that alone makes this game worthwhile.

Another impressive feature is the water effects, which are shown throughout the game. It’s unfortunate that we only see them a few times through the story, but whenever they do they are always spectacular, despite being accomplished in a very simple way.

For a game that is situated under water, I expected to see a bit more water. But for a game that tries to portray what this one does, I expected no less. The amount of details, and thought, placed in the sceneries are overwhelming.

Bottom line

We’ve seen great physics in Half Life 2, and then graphics being pushed to their limits with Crysis. If I were to place Bioshock between those two, then I’d say it is the closest thing to a perfect marriage between great physics and great graphics, with the added bonus of an engaging storyline.

After Toshiba’s announcement last year, to release a 32gb card of the same kind, it is now Panasonic’s turn to enter the high-capacity range with this new model. It’s not breakthrough, nor an industry first, but it is the start of many new cards from different manufacturers with the same capacity, and this means that prices will drop sooner, rather than later.

Besides having an outstanding storage capacity, it also has great resistance to high and low temperatures and can be kept and used from temperatures that go from -25 to +85⁰C. I’m not a professional photographer but if I were I’d feel very happy right now.

The price hasn’t been announced yet, but if they follow Toshiba’s steps, then it will probably cost, more or less, $800. Yeah, I think I’ll wait a while longer before buying a card with a similar capacity.

If the SDK wasn’t reason enough to convince you to purchase an iPod Touch (or iPhone), then perhaps this is. Game developers HermitWorks have successfully managed to get a version of Quake 3 arena running on their iPod Touches with only a few modifications of the code (which is Open Source now, in case you don’t know).

Seeing is believing, so without further a do:

It isn’t perfected yet, as you can see from the video, and there is no word if or when they’ll release the binaries or a file that you can use to install it on your iPod/iPhone. But given that they released the binaries for one of their previous games very recently, I think it’s quite likely that they will, or someone else will.

Releasing an iPhone version of the game is great for them as developers and great for the whole iPod SDK community, so it’s a win-win situation no matter what. I’m quite certain that we still have a lot to see from Apple and their touchscreen devices, and I can’t wait for it.

Crysis is by far the most impressive and immersing game in terms of sheer detail and graphical quality. It combines one of the most advanced game engines ever developed with incredibly rich, lust environments and even a pinch of military strategy.

Despite of how good everything looks, there are some things that can’t be overlooked. The engine isn’t flawless, you’ll see more than one glitch one too many times, and the story is mediocre at best. That isn’t to say that it’s a bad game, but it is a game that excels very little in any aspect other than it’s looks and gameplay.

Gameplay: 4 out 5

Throughout most of the game you’ll be limited to patches of terrain of a tropical island. Although the environment is wide enough to give you freedom to choose your path or how you approach your objectives, after halfway through the game you’ll find that the game progression is very linear, but simply has rather large edges. This isn’t a bad aspect though, because it suits the game just fine. It gives you options without taking away too much focus from the game’s progression, and there are plenty of optional encounters or approaches to each level which will keep you entertained as you progress.

As you proceed you’ll have access to various different weapons, most of them with the same level of effectiveness (more on that later) but it’s clear that some are better suited to some game styles than others. If you choose the stealthy approach, which is advantageous at some parts in the game, you will need to carefully choose your locations, and measure your ammo well because it’s simply impossible to snipe an entire camp of enemies, though it’s a good idea to snipe out some key enemies, mainly the ones holding turrets or the snipers on top of the towers.

Stealth works well in “open” environments or “human” environments, such as plains or enemy bases, but you’ll find out (all too well) that it’s not as effective in the forests, because enemies can usually detect you very easily through the thickest of bushes, although you can’t.

During most of the game you’ll be carrying a nice 2-handed shotgun or automatic gun and blasting, dodging and sprinting through all of the different obstacles.

Another problem I found was that the gun spread isn’t regular. Some enemies will go down quicker than any animal critter you shoot, others will feel like you’re shooting a brick wall, despite most of them wearing the same, typical military uniform. With the shotgun being one of my favorite weapons, it was very upsetting to see one soldier being taken down in one shot and another one surviving 3 consecutive head or body shots.

Storyline (spoiler warning): 2 out of 5

The story is your typical “Hero goes somewhere. Finds out more than he expected. Ends up having to save the world” type of story. The main character, or should I say the “hero” is as generic as heroes can get. With no background whatsoever and complete lack of emotions for his comrades, except for his squad leader, there’s little to be said about him.

After a bit of solo gun blazing you’ll eventually find out that there is something being kept hidden. And if the big extra-terrestrial claw-structure-thing, that showed up when a large part of a mountain crumbled in one of the first levels, didn’t give it away, there are aliens in the game.

You’ll discover, fight them, and curse at their ability to randomly kill you in one blow when you reach, more or less two thirds of the game. Thankfully most of the human bodies you’ll find in that part of the game seem to have a rocket launcher beside them, which is surprisingly convenient.

What starts off as a type of story ends up as your typical American action movie storyline, filled with all of the cliche-ness that you’d expect from one. The ending screams patriotism and arrives precisely when the story was getting somewhere. It sounds a bit silly saying this but for most part of the game there is hardly any story progression whatsoever.

The number of relevant characters in the game plot is ridiculously small. There are, for starters your team members, which drop like flies in the first minutes of the game leaving you with a very annoying British colleague and your stereotypical mean-looking African general. Then there’s an enemy leader, that seems like your main threat when you first encounter, but is taken down as soon as you reach him, and there’s an old commander at the end who is only relevant for… just about 10 minutes of the game.

Presentation: 5 out of 5

Crysis has set the standards for processors and graphics cards.

When a graphics card can run it “decently” or with above average settings, it’s considered good. At the moment, there is no card that can run Crysis in 1280×1024 with 2x Anti-Aliasing. My graphics card can pull 25 to 40 frames per second, and runs in high settings with 2x Anti-Aliasing. Which is decent enough to play yet still captures most of the great visual quality the game can deliver.

Whether you want to look at the reflections, the shadows, the lighting effects, or the sheer detail of the levels, you’ll find no title as good as it. It’s just a shame that the variety in levels wasn’t very big, but the game serves perfectly as a showcase for next-gen graphics.

Bottom-line

I honestly can’t say this game is worth the full price tag. It’s relatively short, despite having huge levels; it’s quirky, in some aspects; and doesn’t have very much to offer once you finish it. If you recently bought a graphics card that came with Crysis bundled, it’s the perfect game to showoff what your new hardware can do and it’s entertaining enough to keep you playing for a short while.

If you’re looking for a great-eye-candy, fast-paced action game, then Crysis is perfect for you. Just don’t go looking for anything other than that in it

Final Rating: 3.7 out of 5
