How to Use Garageband for a Karaoke Party

How to Use Garageband for a Karaoke Party

Need to brush up on your singing or guitar playing? Too embarrassed to sing karaoke in front of a live audience? Is Rock Band not stimulating enough for you? Here’s a little solution that might do the trick. Using Garageband, there’s a way to reproduce popular songs. It has the capability to remove the individual instruments or melody, making it possible for you to mute the vocals and sing over it like you would do with a karaoke machine. You could also mute the guitars and play along as if you were rehearsing with a full band. Follow these three easy steps: Read more »

XToaster360: Putting That Old Toaster to Good Use

XToaster360: Putting That Old Toaster to Good Use

Got an old toaster or two that is merely collecting dust in the corner? If you are a candidate for that reality TV series The Hoarders, then you might want to put one of those toasters to good use – just like what this guy who calls himself ncarouso11 did. Basically, he got a four-slice toaster, took out its innards, and then replaced (carefully, I bet) them with the stuff that you find inside of an Xbox360. Here’s how it looks. In case you’re wondering how you get the game CD in, here’s the answer. Here’s a video of the toaster slash Xbox360 in action in case you need more Read more »

Navteq GPS – The Perfect Christmas Gift

Navteq GPS – The Perfect Christmas Gift

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of NAVTEQ. All opinions are 100% mine. I love my in-dash GPS. I’m not trying to sell you anything so I won’t get into the nitty gritty of who the manufacturer is or what the model is. However, earlier this year, I ran into a problem. My wife and I decided to spend the day at a relatively new shopping outlet that opened about 60 miles away from home. We set out with a full wallet, ready to embrace a day of deep discounts and food court calories. As we exited the highway, I was relying solely on my in-dash Read more »

10 Geeky Scanographs

10 Geeky Scanographs

Ever heard of scanography? It’s a relatively new subset of photography where super-high-resolution images are captured using a flatbed scanner. Yes, it limits the artist to what they can capture, since scanners tend to not be very movable. On the other hand, limitations are always opportunities to the truly creative, and often result in images with a very creepy, almost x-ray type feel. Some people merely place their objects on the scanner and see what happens. Others employ Photoshop to manipulate their scanned images with layering and other effects. Some even move things around on the glass surface while the scanner is going by, which creates really bizarre distortions. There Read more »

Review: ‘Spartacus Blood & Sand’ Season One Blu-ray

Review: ‘Spartacus Blood & Sand’ Season One Blu-ray

The historic, real-life tale of Spartacus is not new to Hollywood. But neither history nor Hollywood have ever seen anything quite like Starz’ Spartacus: Blood & Sand. It is something wholly new, using bits of other well-known formulas in creative and clever new ways that adds up to something far greater than the sum of its parts. At times stubbornly beholden to history, and at others wildly veering from it, Spartacus nonetheless introduces us to the familiar slave who eventually rose to lead an incredible rebellion against the Roman Empire. The Weirdest Lamp Ever

The Weirdest Lamp Ever

After my post a few weeks ago on empty printer cartridges that a clever artist used as art, I got to wondering about what other things used ink cartridges might be made into. A quick search on Etsy turned up these bizarre lamps, made by seller Lowell & Louise, which I find oddly mesmerizing. The popular term for recycling old materials into something entirely new like this is “repurposing.” These ink cartridge lamps have been completely disassembled and reassembled with suitable bulbs inside, custom-cut aluminum rods to hold the multi-cartridge variety together, and a basic two-pronged power plug. Available as Chandeliers, Hanging Lamps, or basic Lamps, their prices range from Read more »

Ink Cartridge Art

Ink Cartridge Art

There’s literally nothing artists won’t use as a creative medium. Proof positive: Faith Pearson’s diorama models that use nothing but black & white and colour ink cartridges. The UK’s Ink and Media Blog assigned Pearson — an artist who specializes in “toy theater making” — to create something out of a bunch of ink cartridges, similar to these genuine canon ink cartridges, that were going to be thrown away. (No recycling? Say it ain’t so! No, seriously — Al Gore will have them killed.) She blew their minds when she came back with these incredible images and scenes depicting iconic science fiction and fantasy movies. Pearson used no Photoshopping or Read more »

The Best iPad Case Ever

The Best iPad Case Ever

One of my greatest childhood frustrations was the Etch a Sketch. No matter how hard I tried, I never was able to create a cool design or picture with the thing, and it drove me nuts. Eventually, I hucked it across the room in frustration and stormed off. Inevitably, a week or so later I’d go and pick it up and try again. Wash, rinse, repeat. But this is legitimately cool. It’s an official Etch A Sketch iPad Case, and better yet, it’s cheap. $39, which is cheaper than most iPad cases out there today, and it also doubles as a hiding box for your iPad, because really, who’s going to jack Read more »
