AT&T launches Samsung SGH-A737 phone

AT&T has released a new Samsung cellphone called SGH-A737. The most impressive specification is the support for microSD memory cards up to 4GB, while the less sensational feature being the 1.3-megapixel camera.

Samsung SGH-A737

Taking in consideration this is a 3G phone, you’ll be able to use various AT&T services, like Video Share, Mobile Music, XM Radio, eMusic Mobile, and IM support for AOL, Yahoo and Windows Live.

The Samsung SGH-A737 is valued at $100 after a $50 rebate, and is available in 4 versions that only differ in color – red, lime, orange and blue.

The Calculator Belt Buckle

In case you have serious problems with mathematics and can’t do a simple 45*21 multiplication, maybe the Calculator Belt Buckle can help you out.

Calculator Belt Buckle

The image and name of the gadget say it all, so I won’t bother to write a witty description, but knowing that you can always count with a calculator placed on your belt buckle is always good. The Chrome Calculator Belt Buckle is very, very cheap – it only costs $10.

You can easily attach this buckle the correct way to have a stylish math buckle or flip it upside down goofy style for easy use so you can see exactly what your doing.

While most of the audio systems currently available on the market don’t offer the possibility to connect to the internet, the MusicPal is here to mark the difference.

MusicPal

Besides being able to play internet radio, MusicPal can show RSS feeds on its display screen. On top of those 2 most important features, you can stream MP3 (or WAV) files from your computer thanks to the support of a WLAN connection, and simply use the MusicPal to listen to the songs via the built-in speaker.

Other features include an alarm clock, and a line-out jack so you can use headphones or more powerful speakers than the one that comes with the device. The MusicPal costs €130, close to $187, at Freecom.

BestBuy – one of the biggest electronic retail stores on the US, and Mydeo – a video hosting website, worked together to create a video sharing/hosting website for BestBuy.

BestBuy

Why will people use their system instead of YouTube or other similar sites that can store/share video content? According tho the VP of BestBuy, this video service will offer privacy (duh) and won’t have with ads, unlike what happens with 99% of the other cases.

As you can imagine, this service won’t be available for free. A subscription method is being used with a base plan that costs $7 per month and lets users upload 100 minutes of video content, with a maximum length of 30 minutes per each video.

Good? Or bad? I still prefer the free alternatives…

Uruguay orders 100,000 laptops from OLPC

Remember the OLPC project? One Laptop Per Child? A $100 laptop that actually costs over $200 in some countries? Well, the XO Laptop has received its first batch of orders and it comes from Uruguay.

XO Laptop

100,000 is the number of XO laptops that will become available to children that have 6 up to 12 years. A new world for them, and a new generation of users on the internet. Hopefully, they will use the laptop on a good and useful way instead of otherwise.

Some info about the device:

The XO laptop, as the machine is known, has been developed to be used primarily by children in the developing world.

It is durable, waterproof and can be powered by solar, foot-pump or pull-string powered chargers. It includes a sunlight readable display so that it can be used outside and has no moving parts.

Lenovo K100 Desktop Computer

Lenovo is preparing itself for the upcoming Christmas scene and has released a new desktop computer codenamed K100. The system doesn’t include a LCD monitor as you can see on the image, so the prices that can go from $590 to $1,130 are appropriate.

Lenovo K100

The top notch model is obviously the most expensive one ($1,130) and the high price is caused by the quad core processor, this one is available at Office Depot and comes with a TV Tuner and OBB (one-touch back-up button). The other models, $590 and $790, feature a dual core processor and can be bought at Micro Center.

Highlights seem to include a dial for balancing processor speed with noise-level/power consumption.

The Cooler Scooter is perfect for alcoholics

In case you are a real beer drinker, or simply like to take drinks for a walk, the Cooler Scooter will become your best friend during the hot summer days.

Cooler Scooter

Think of it as a cooler attached to a scooter that has a 500W electric motor and can reach a maximum speed of 14mph. Pretty cool, right? The cooler has space for 24 bottles of beer (or water, soda, etc), plus 3,5 Kg of ice, so the drinks can always be at the right temperature.

If you like to drink and drive but are afraid to do so in the open road, don’t worry because this special scooter can help you out:

A cup holder is located between the drivers knees, and it opens to allow access to beverages stored in the cooler while driving.

Now you only have to worry about the cops, or not…

PS – The 14 M.P.H. Cooler costs $500 and the battery life is close to 15 miles (or 24km).

Lessons learned from moderating comments

After a couple of weeks of receiving some unusual comments at ForeverGeek, I took it upon myself and decided to clean the house.

Forever Geek comments

Here are the lessons and other misc details that I learned from performing the hard task:

  • sploggers are using “new” techniques to have trackbacks (read links) from original content (read specific posts). Most of the times, their post starts like this:

“someone” wrote an interesting/fantastic post today, here’s a quick excerpt

And it ends with a copy/paste + link of our original article. Obviously, the sploggers in question are using some kind of RSS software that can track keywords and copy the content, because only particular posts are being “plagiarized”.

  • In ForeverGeek’s case, the targets are posts concerning games.
  • Sploggers like to use .info domains because they are cheaper.
  • Almost one month ago, a Spanish person left a rude comment, thank g-d people didn’t notice, it was hardcore.
  • The niche’s keywords are used in the domain name of the splog. Example: xbox360bestgames.info
  • Someone from Romania (or with a .ro email address) tried to include an affiliate Amazon link on a comment by using tinyURL. So smart!
  • Some people don’t like to use their real email on the comments, so it is kind of usual to see a fake@email.com as the address.
  • The sploggers IP were directed to the US (Texas, Minnesota) and Netherlands.
  • From time to time, the Akismet anti-spam plug-in still approves comments made by splogs.

Motorola has recently introduced two new bluetooth headsets on the market with specific targets: one is made for women, while the other is supposed to be used by bluetooth headset newbies – the gender doesn’t matter on this one.

Motorola H357 and H680 bluetooth headsets

Named H357 and priced at only $40, this Motorola headset is the one made for newbies. It has a simple design and shouldn’t be a problem making it work.

On the other hand there is the H680 which is made for the women, it has a particular design and the whole package includes a carrying case. It has a price tag of $80.

Both of them feature the TrueComfort and EasyPair technologies, which Motorolola claims to better fit the ear and save phone connection settings for the next time the headset is turned on, respectively.

I don’t know about you, but for me, having a 24-inch LCD monitor is still a luxury that I can’t afford. So when Acer comes out with the P243W LCD monitor at $457, it brings a smile to my face because it isn’t as expensive as I thought it would be.

Acer P243W - 24-inch LCD monitor

The new Acer monitor has a contrast ratio of 3,000:1 and a 1920×1200 native resolution. Additionally, the brightness level is 400 nits and there are three different output connections available: DVI-D, D-sub, and HDMI.

Sadly it seems like Acer is having productivity problems because there will only be a thousand of P243W’s for sale. But don’t worry because they have plans to add smaller (19 and 20-inch) LCD monitors on the near future.

AlarmWear – Personal Alarm Clothing

The next time you feel you’re in danger in the middle of the street, instead of running or just getting robbed, use the Alarm Jacket – with a touch of a button it sounds a loud alarm at 125 db. That is probably more decibels than you need, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.

AlarmWear Personal Alarm Clothing

There are different backpacks, jackets, and fanny packs for adults and children that feature this safe alarm. The prices can go from $37 for an alarm fanny pack, up to $57 for an adult alarm jacket.

Conclusion

Since the alarm is hidden and embedded within the AlarmWear jacket or accessory, it would take a predator a long time to deactivate it. The desired result is the predator running off to avoid being seen or apprehended.

Flickr and Picnik get together

Flickr – the most famous photo sharing website in the world, and Picnik – a not so popular online image editor tool, have reached an agreement to work together and come up with a way to edit photos on Flickr.

Flickr

Currently there is only one editing function available, which is to rotate the image, but in the near future there will be much more.

How will it work:

Users will be presented with an edit option on the photo page. Clicking it takes the user to a new Flickr photo edit page, with the Picnik tools integrated via an iframe. After editing, users can add the edited photo to their Flickr account or, if they are a Flickr pro user, overwrite the original.

Can someone say “finally!”? I bet most Flickr users have been waiting for this announcement for a long time…

Chinese Internet Cops

In a desperate move made by China, the internet cops (image) working for the government decided to redirect all the Chinese traffic coming from Google Blog Search, Yahoo, Microsoft Live, and YouTube, to a (censored) Chinese search engine called Baidu.

It is not the first time that China blocks specific sites, and I bet it won’t be the last. Back in March it was LiveJournal, and the Chinese version of Wikipedia had some troubles too, in 2006.

As always, you can check the virtual Great Wall Of China, to test if a website is accessible on China, or not.

Reasons for redirecting traffic from 4 major websites:

- Economical
- Censorship

You decide – Is it because of the money? The censorship? Or both?

Can you image the number of visits that Baidu must be receiving? I can’t…

All Daily Show episodes online

In a good move made by Viacom, all the Daily Show episodes are online at their official website – www.thedailyshow.com. From 1999 to today, you can now view 7,128 short clips (not entire episode) of the comic show. Fortunately, the content is updated daily, so the 7k number will rise.

The Daily Show episodes online

Obviously, there is some kind of advertisement on the videos, more specifically a 7 second promo about Hyunday on the beginning of each clip, and another fun fact is that when the video is paused, another Hyunday advertisement pops up – a small image with a car and text saying “Hyunday – Think about it”. It is original to say the least, and doesn’t bother the users.

On another related point, Viacom and Comedy Central put all the Daily Show videos online, after suing YouTube. See any relation?

Firefox Quick Tip: When downloads stop working…

Sometimes Firefox freaks out and for no reason at all, the downloads (Ctrl + J) stop working and it doesn’t allow you to download anything while using the browser. Be it a simple image, or an email attachment – nothing can be done.

Firefox Downloads

This problem has happened to me before, and the solution to get the downloads working again (in my case) was very easy – just had to delete one file, the “downloads.rdf” to be more specific, that is suppose to be located in the Profile folder of Firefox.

There might be other solutions to solve the “downloads in Firefox problem” – check this page on the Mozilla Knowledge Base for more information/solutions, such as reseting the download folder.
