Inspired by the likes of Tokyo Flash watches, I started thinking about some concept watch designs that would force the wearer to work the old grey matter in order to work out what time it was.

Some offer more precision that others, and some are easier to read, but all are definitely not your average analog or digital watch.

1. Fraction Clock

Granted, this is a simple digital watch so it’s not hard to see what time it is.

However, what this watch will do is to chime once in each one hour period — not necessarily on the hour but based on the associated fraction for that hour.

The minutes and seconds are calculated from the rounded decimal equivalents of each fraction.

So, where hour one is 1/1 or simply 1am/1pm, the seventh hour is 1/7 or 07:14:29.

Interesting that the sixth hour becomes 06:17:07 because there would be no such time as 06:16:67.

2. Rainbow watch

The inner circle, divided into four sections, denotes the hour.

Colours red through indigo (no violet) denote hours 1-6, 7-12, 13-18 or (without indigo) 19-23, with the colour appearing in the appropriate section – top right is the first six hours, bottom right is the next six hours, and so on.

The outer circle, divided into ten sections, denotes the minutes.

The ‘tens of minutes’ are denoted by colours — red = 0, orange = 1, yellow = 2, green = 3, blue = 4, indigo = 5 — while the units are represented by the position – zero at top right and then incrementing clockwise.

Times from 00:00 to 00:59 have no colour displayed in the inner circle.

3. Periodic Table Watch

This is a very simple clock to read. The white illuminated element denotes the hour while the yellow illuminated element denotes the minute.

If the hour and minute are the same, the element is divided equally. If one or other colour is not present, it denotes a zero.

The following times are shown for 00:20, 11:23, 15:15 and 23:00:

4. Letter Watch

Letters replace digits on this watch.

For the hours, the letters ‘a’ through ‘x’ represent digits 0 through 23.

For the tens of minutes, the space is a hyphen for zero, and then one of the five vowels for 1-5 — i.e. a = 1, e = 2, i = 3, o = 4, u = 5.

The units of minutes are represented by the letters ‘a’ through ‘z’, and change approximately every 23 seconds (23 x 26 = 598 seconds).

The following is what would be displayed for times 05:24:25, 12:09:01 and 22:57:59.

5. Planet Watch

The eight planets of the solar system are used to show the time.

The top row denotes the hours, with planets from left to right (distance from sun) representing the digits 1-8. Each planet can have up to three red dots beneath, representing an hour multiplied by either one, two or three.

The bottom row denotes the minutes: a new planet will appear, from left to right, every 7.5 minutes.

The faces below represent 08:19, 15:32 and 21:56.

What do you think? Would you wear a watch that told you the time like this?

I have never met a gangsta who calls himself a geek, or a geek who dubs himself a gangsta. I am pretty sure that if I look hard enough, I’ll find someone who fits this description. There is no denying it – gangsta culture has become quite prominent in the recent years, and people who are part of this sub-culture are proud to be identified with it. But, what do we get when we combine geek and gangsta together? Kristin Verby seems to have gotten things just right. Armed with a digital camera and some 3D software, she came up with some interesting concepts. I wouldn’t mind having one or two of these – not that I am a gangsta…

Ba-Donka-Donk Mouse

We all know how important it is to have a nice behind, and this mouse epitomizes that. I need a new mouse. I wouldn’t mind having one of those behind for real. I’ll settle for the mouse. I am sure a lot of guys would, too!

Glock Remote

Alright, I am no gangsta but I can appreciate a nice gun, and Glocks are as good as they come. You have to admit, this one’s pretty cool. Just in case someone decides to rob you at home while you’re watching TV, you may have the element of surprise by pointing the remote at them!

Boombox Sneakers

They probably won’t have one in my size, but Nike + iPod don’t have anything against these sneakers. You got speakers and a DVD slot. It looks like there are ports for headsets as well. Talk about all in one stuff!

It’s a pity these gadgets may not see the light of day, don’t you think?

Above: That’s a weekend promo for Company of Heroes. Steam is giving it away for 75% off, at roughly 12USD for the complete set of such an epic game (these were the guys who made the first Dawn of War RTS). Many such promotions abound on Steam, a digital downloads and content provider for PC gaming that owns roughly 70% of the industry for digital downloads.

I’ve been on Steam since 2007 and have since bought a number of games from them. The trend however, is that the titles I purchase form part of the weekend promotion deals where I can get high ticket games at half or more than half the price months after they are released. What I can’t get over though is that despite this, the up and coming games I want to play NOW are always from retail, for the sole reason that I’m getting Modern Warfare 2 cheaper off the shelf than from … well … vapor.

I don’t want to stereotype it as a “sad” reason for this, but there is truth to this: it gives retail a reason to exist. By undercutting the price, especially in boxes sold in Asia, it gives vendors a reason to continue selling retail despite the advantage and convenience of going digital. On Steam, Modern Warfare 2 sells for an unwavering USD $59.99. In Asia, the retail of MW2 is pegged at USD $49.00. Same goes for Dragon Age: Origins which retails at USD $29.00 on an Asian box versus USD $39.99 on Steam. This has of course something to do with how Steam’s primary market envelopes the west, with gamers from Asia looking at Steam as a good alternative for early releases. Problem is, in most places in Asia, games are set for “worldwide release” to the credit of the retailers.

As I write this post I have the pages for both Bad Company 2 and Mass Effect 2 pre-orders on my browser. I know its going to cost less on retail and I’ve learned my lesson in purchasing these types of games on pre-order that give you special items or unlocks which in truth aren’t worth the “tactical advantage.” On pre- order, Bad Company 2 gives four pre-set unlocks so I won’t need to grind for these in-game (hence the “tactical advantage”). Mass Effect 2 gives you better equipment to start out with. The truth? It doesn’t matter. I know that the retail edition will ALSO come with its own set of special items (such as the special ships if you buy a Star Trek Online box from Gamestop). And also, because of cross selling efforts done by publishers, I’m able to unlock good items as well from Mass Effect 2 when I bought my Dragon Age: Origins set from a store.

I think digital downloads should take into consideration more savvy promotions despite the price discrepancy in countries outside the US. For me, saving 10 dollars is still a big deal compared to all the freebies I can get in-game. Consider: the average salary of a fresh grad in developing countries in Asia can be as low as USD $15.00 a day.

It’s Consumer Electronics Show time again, folks, which means many tech people camp out in Las Vegas to see what the big (and not so big) players in the world of consumer electronics have to offer for the coming year.

Not all of it’s brand new, but CES is a great place to showcase it. There are geekier conventions, of course, but what would it be if Forever Geek didn’t give a decent nod Vegas way and showcase some of this year’s highlights.

The show is still rolling as we speak, so we may not have captured all the best bits yet. Still, let’s take a look at what’s hot at CES.

3DTV

You don’t have to look far before you find someone talking about 3D TV. It’s set to be one of the next big things and major players are lining up to get a piece of the action.

CyberLink, working in partnership with the Blu-ray Disc Association and major chip manufacturers including NVIDIA, Intel and AMD, has been showing off its 3D Blu-ray for PC solutions. That hopefully means lots of compatibility and less confusion for consumers.

XpanD showed off its latest advanced 3D active-shutter glasses designed to work with 3D-ready LCD, plasma and DLP displays. Any content encoded in 3D and that plays back at 120fps will compatible with the glasses, which are remarkably sleek given the technology hidden inside.

Dell has jumped on the 3D bandwagon with its 23-inch Alienware OptX monitor. As it shares its name with Dell’s inherited line of gaming PCs and notebooks, you can be sure that it’s aimed at gamers. Oh, and the Alienware M15x gaming laptop is also 3D-ready.

Many other manufacturers have decided to put “3D” in their blurb, including Toshiba on its new Qosmio X505 multimedia laptop.

Both Toshiba and Samsung have declared TVs containing processors which are capable of converting standard two-dimensional content into three-dimensions, and no doubt other top TV manufacturers will be doing the same.

And in case you think 3DTV is a long way off, the Consumer Electronics Association — though they may be over-optimistic — reckon that some four million 3DTV-ready sets will be sold this year.

Audio

CES always sees a huge range of speakers, headphones and other audio products come into the market and there’s no way we can cover them all, but enough interesting developments caught my eye to mention them here.

Firstly, Bowers & Wilkins has extended its range of good-looking, highly functional products which include the amazing looking 800 Series Diamond loudspeakers. They’re backed by names such as musician-producer Dave Stewart, film composer James Newton Howard and Abbey Road sound engineer Peter Cobbin. You can find out more at Bowers & Wilkins web site.

There are also some far-from-run-of-the-mill iPod docks and speakers including the Zeppelin.

Another Great British audio manufacturer (not that I’m biased or anything) is Naim Audio. They’ve just launched the UnitiQute high-end all-in-one audio player that’ll handle FM, DAB and Internet radio, streaming audio, iPod and USB sources. Find out more here.

Display and Touch

Pushing on with new technology in the world of touchscreens, Pacinian introduces its Surface Actuation system that offers a thin, responsive and power-efficient feedback system for use particularly in mobile devices.

Darice has already reported on a new material being considered for e-book readers. LG Display has created “metal foil” e-paper technology which is not only touch-sensitive and fairly high resolution but is also bendable.

Jayvee looked at Samsung’s transparent AMOLED screens which are sure to find some interesting applications over the coming few years.

Processors

“Most people would rather die than think.”
- Bertrand Russell

The “infection” is a social commentary. When Peter Jackson released King Kong, the reference to the giant ape coming from a place called Skull Island traces its roots back to one of the Australian director’s earlier films, Dead / Alive where a strain of disease that can only be carried by a specific type of monkey causes the zombification of a small town. Although this formula of an unknown tropical disease is more akin to the Haitian roots of zombies, the “infected” of the past 10 years arise more from biological experiments or environmental issues rooted back towards man’s greed. Just take a look at all the Resident Evil titles. Likewise with the House of the Dead shooter series in the arcades, of how horror has its roots embedded in science.

There is a scene in the first episode of Dead Set where an Infected is looking through a TV station camera showing the Big Brother safehouse, drooling over the warm bodies of the remaining housemates. This is the other side of the zombie culture, of being stripped of higher functions as society satiates their “hunger for the media.” The opening credits of Shaun of the Dead as well parody regular people going about their business mindlessly without much meaning.

Beyond the blood, gore and fanfare, society has played one of the biggest practical jokes on itself by showing that the parallel between today’s living and the walking dead have very little difference.

In the alternate ending of I Am Legend, Will Smith realizes that the world order has changed, making him the last human, as it is considered to be quite “normal” to be Infected.

In the recent Zombieland (2009), a young boy develops a list of unconditional rules to follow in order to stay alive. It is in this frame of mind that we put this commentary to a close as we see that if we go back to the basics of survival, all you need is a little discipline, cardio, and to an extent, plants (Plants vs Zombies 2009) in order to live.

This is Part III of a series titled ‘A Decade of Zombies.’ Part II is here.

Perhaps the canon of modern day zombie subculture would be two works of literature by Max Brooks (Mel Brooks’ son). In 2003 he released the Zombie Survival Guide (a copy of which I keep in the glove compartment of my car) and later on, a more epic World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (2006 // big screen in 2010).

In World War Z, Brooks takes on the role of a post-apocalyptic UN agent trying to piece together the memorials of key players in the third world war. This was a war not waged against other countries for treaties or for politics, but a war against the spreading zombie infection brought about by a virus called Solanum. Beneath the surface however the book holds undertones to the unpreparedness of civilization to cope with a world where politics, economics, and technology fall at an instant. “How do you defeat an army that knows no fear?” he says.

Brooks’ answer is retroactively his first book. The Zombie Survival Guide is a detailed step by step to preparing for the inevitable outbreak. It lists weapons, apparel, locations and strategies on how to defend yourself from a zombie attack. The guide is divided into six chapters, teaching you how to stock, run, defend and survive in a doomsday scenario where all man-made institutions have crumbled. It had been so well written as a survival guide that I actually found a copy under the “wilderness survival” and “travel” sections of bigger book stores.

What Brooks brought into the picture was the authenticity of an impending attack. The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z are written with such conviction and authenticity similar to the War of the Worlds (1938) radio play by Orson Wells that caused a public stir, yet was actually a Halloween practical joke.

This is Part II of a series titled ‘A Decade of Zombies.’ Part I is here.

Playwright David Ives once said that “it is all in the timing” referring to the concept of the punch line. It appears to be the similar case with the zombie apocalypse where the punch line is made more humorous when it occurs in moments of absurd timeliness. Take for instance Joe Ballarini’s Dance of the Dead (2008), where the apocalypse takes place on the night of the senior prom in a small town high school.

The UK was also particularly successful in creating similar scenarios. On one hand we have Shaun of the Dead (2004) where the outbreak occurs on the day Simon Pegg’s character decides to propose to his long time girlfriend. On the other hand, Dead Air (2008) a TV mini series, chronicles the survival of several housemates from the Big Brother safe house who were spared when the outbreak spread across the United Kingdom.

Similarly in literature, a retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice has been released in the middle of 2009. Titled Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the arrival of Mr. Darcy serves as a concurrent distraction to Elizabeth Bennet, as she tries to rid the hamlet of Meryton from the zombie infestation. The publishers notes describes the book as “Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you’d actually want to read.”

Actually, the book sucked.

The formula for the modern day zombie apocalypse plays on the age old wording from the Christian Bible — that it “will come like a thief in the night” (1 Thessalonians 5:2-4). Not only does the apocalypse provide a setting for a comedic enterprise, it also helps build an exemplary literary device for published works that already exist. Think about it. Take any work of literature, add zombies, and you have a completely new plot device to play with. In retrospect though it would have been the same if you added ninjas or robots but there’s a more emotional element to seeing friends and loved ones undergo the transformation into an Infected. That’s how modern day memes are formed.

It is the transformation that gets to people. It is what offers storytellers a template for human conflict that apparently never tires. Oftentimes in movies have characters fallen to folly by trying to revive those who have passed on such as Yvette Tan’s short but gripping literary piece, Waking the Dead (2009) where an old man, driven by madness tries to revive a graveyard full of old friends, among them his former wife. The fleeting sentiment goes beyond human beings, as seen in Will Smith’s facial expression as he twisted the neck of his German Shepherd as the infection spread through the dog’s system.

It was much simpler back then. Zombies, just like pirates, robots and ninjas became a significant part of pop culture due to the enduring appearances in movies, comics, video games and the Internet. In the past decade however, the term “zombie” has been ironically stratified into many other sub-types. Before the influence of George Romero’s zombies from Dawn of the Dead (originally from the 1968 Night of the Living Dead, remade in 2004), the “zombie” was defined as a soulless husk that retained ambulatory functions. Although zombies fed on humans, it was Max Brooks (The Zombie Survival Guide, 2003) who clarified that zombies only feed because they can, out of feral instinct, not because they need to, as opposed to the archetypes of 28 Days Later (2002), that need flesh in order to survive.

Today, the walking dead go by many names. J.K. Rowling refers to them as the Inferi. Other works of literature call them ‘ghouls’ or ‘revenants.’ The most common however are “The Infected” which refer to the fast moving, feral like traits that evolved from the George Romero Zombie, and was further brought down into games such as Valve’s first person shooter, Left for Dead I and II (2008-2009). In this decade, zombies have evolved to become much faster, almost like meta humans to re-instill fear into the hearts of society. In the same way that Hollywood turned sharks into monsters, they did the same by upgrading zombies with extreme agility.

This series doesn’t aim to list down every single zombie film and reference in the past ten years. What it wants to achieve however, is to bring together a sort of cohesiveness into the building of a cultural phenomenon that hinges on two themes: breaking social norms in order to survive, and finding order in total anarchy. In more sociological terms, the zombie apocalypse asks this question, “What would happen to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs when family, career, and self-fulfillment are trimmed from the pyramid.”

So you’ve a geek to buy presents for this Christmas? Abide by these twelve simple steps and you’re much more likely to get it right.

1. Features matter

Given the choice between two similarly priced gadgets, one with more features and the other simply covered in crystals or other “precious” bling, you should definitely pick the feature-laden item.

Features trump bling any day. Even if you think you’re dealing with a girly geek, chances are high they are much more interested in what their new gadget can do than how much shiny stuff there is on the outside.

And definitely no Hello Kitty. Please.

Example: You might think those Swarovski crystals add a much needed wow factor, but your geek will simply be looking for the extra 2GB of memory, expansion port, megapixels, extra controllers…

2. Brand matters

If you know that your geek is after a specific brand, then it’s for a good reason. It doesn’t matter whether the reasoning (assuming you’re told it) matches your perceptions or not — it has been well researched, is there for a good reason, and is generally set in stone.

You might be tempted to buy a cheaper unit from a different manufacturer, but be aware that smiles on Christmas morning are highly unlikely if you do this.

Example: if your geek wants an Apple iPod Touch, don’t buy a Zune or something by Creative. And so on.

3. Speed matters

Don’t buy a slow gadget, either on purpose or out of naivety.

As mentioned in point two, a great deal of research will likely have gone into your geek’s choice of gear, and buying something that doesn’t do the task (quickly enough or at all) just won’t cut it.

4. Capacity matters

You’d expect this to follow point three.

If a geek has told you that the latest gadget needs 16GB of storage, it’s because that requirement has been painstakingly measured. Buying a gadget (even when all else is equal) with just 8GB of storage will leave your geek in a quandary.

Better buy the right capacity in the first place. Memory is cheaper than a broken relationship.

5. Platform matters

Please make sure that you know what computer platforms or games consoles your geek has before trying to buy software for it.

Software can be quite a personal choice as it is, but at least get the platform right.

Example: Buying a Mac user something that only runs on Windows will not go down well.

6. Power matters

Find out what most gadgets of a certain type run on, and stick to that.

For example, many geeks turn their noses up at digital cameras that don’t use lithium-ion rechargeable batteries because it’s the standard for decent cameras.

Many geeks will have invested in USB battery chargers for AA, AAA and other usually disposable batteries, but they tend not to go down so well.

7. What I want matters

The best way to know what to buy is to ask the geek, but with technology and gadgets it can be so easy to get the choice wrong because you didn’t get the product code quite right.

Why not ask your geek for their Amazon Wish List instead?

The geek may well have preferred vendors for really specialise geek stuff, but knows that nearly everyone has heard of Amazon and knows how to use it, so will oblige with a list for that purpose.

8. The Store matters

If you’re not using the Amazon store, you might want to give vouchers, but make sure they are for a store that actually sells decent geek stuff.

If you’re unsure, find out in advance. Examine old packaging lying about the house for clues.

If all else fails, money works well.

9. Snacks matter

(Photo: Terren in Virginia)

It’s not all about the gadgets. It’s about what geeks eat when they’re using them.

Sometimes, proper mealtimes fall by the wayside while a new piece of hardware or software is investigated, so find out what their favourite beverages and foodstuffs are, and buy them a large supply.

10. Duplicates matter

You can never have too many of certain items, but others are a pain to have in duplicate, so do check that your geek hasn’t already got the same, or very similar, item you’re thinking of buying.

11. Boredom matters

(Photo DaveFayram)

Some gadgets are the equivalent of socks, underwear and toiletries — useful but boring.

Items that fall into this category are USB memory sticks, cables, discs, hubs, and so on. Unless your geek has specifically asked for them, avoid them.

12. Deconstruction matters

(Photo makelessnoise)

Most geeks are sensitive enough not to disassemble their presents in front of you, but you need to understand that it’s not cool for you to be offended if one day you visit their house and find that present in bits all over the living room floor.

Maybe it went wrong, or maybe it’s being upgraded (even if it’s not supposed to be), or maybe your geek just got bored and decided to see how it works.

You might shudder at the thought of doing anything but the norm with your gadgets, but it’s merely second nature and child’s play to your geek.

So there you go. Twelve tips for buying decent presents for the geek in your life.

I can’t guarantee you’ll buy a perfect present because every geek is different, but at least you have a better chance now.

Geeks, help me out here. What tips would you give to non-geek friends and relatives in their quest to buy you decent presents?

Thanksgiving is less than a week away, and for those who celebrate this holiday, things are probably getting quite hectic at this point. For those who do not really give a darn about Thanksgiving, why not take the time to reflect and think about what you have to be thankful for?

I actually got the idea from Matt Blum over at Geek Dad, who came up with a list of 10 Geeky Things To Be Thankful For. It inspired me to create my own list – albeit a shorter one, with a couple of items similar to his. Here goes.

1.	Online shopping. It’s not just for geeks, but those of us who love to buy gadgets and other geeky stuff (TOYS!) can do so without having to leave the comforts of home. We can find practically anything and everything that we want at a few clicks of the mouse.

2.	Easy access to the Internet. Connectivity is the word. I still remember having to go to Internet shops about 10 years ago. Slow connections, sucky computers – that’s what we had to put up with. Today, I can go online anywhere and everywhere, thanks to wireless networks!

3.	Gadgets are so much cheaper. I have always been a sucker for electronics, but I never thought that I would be able to afford a lot of things that I have now. From gigantic (storage space wise) hard drives to mp3 players to cameras – practically anyone can afford any gadget these days.

What’s on your geeky Thanksgiving list?

We certainly love our movies here at Forever Geek. In many movies cars play a very big role and we are fans of cars as well. Actually there are three things we particularly like in/about movies: Great movie title sequences, special effects and robots and last but not least cars.
So we went ahead and compiled a list of the geekiest cars in movies.

While selecting these cars it was imperative for us that we chose only modified cars, so no Eleanor (Shelby GT500).

Gadgetmobile

The Gadgetmobile is based on a 1964 Lincoln Continental Convertible and designed by Brenda Bradford. The Gadgetmobile can speak, track Inspector Gadget’s location, camouflage itself and move its tires upwards, among other things and thinks its stands above the laws (and does not need to respect speed limits).

American Graffiti Hot Rod

Millner’s yellow hot rod in American Graffiti is a ‘34 Ford Coupe, carrying custom “THX 138″ license plates, which refer to THX 1138, George Lucas’ first movie.

Fab1 Thunderbird

The Fab1 in the 2004 Thunderbirds movie was a heavily modified Ford THunderbird and provided by the company itself. The Thunderbird on 6 wheels is completely road legal and has been featured in Top Gear. The car has bullet-proof, run-flat tires but ca not fly.

Minority Report Lexus 2054

The Lexus 2054 in Minority Report is a concept car running on fuel cells, with advanced safety features, including biometric security systems.
The car, painted in blue this time, also features in Micael Bay’s The Island.

I, Robot Audi RSQ

Built on the chassis of an A4 this Audi concept car, designed for product placement has 2 reverse butterfly doors and the Multi Media Interface (MMI) driver-to-car control system.
This collaboration was a first for Audi and similar to the previously mentioned Lexus concept car in Minority Report.

Judge Dredd Land Rover

22 Land Rovers 101 Forward Control were converted with fiberglass bodies for the movie Judge Dredd and only one had a functional interior for inside shots. The NY Cab is not road legal and had no floors. To see out the windshield you had to tilt your head to one side or the other and lean forward, this basically requiring a second person on board to look out for traffic.

Star Wars Land Speeder

Luke Skywalker’s Land Speeder actually was a modified car. Numerous problems hiding the wheels were encountered. Easiest was to photograph the car from angles not showing the wheels. In longer scenes the Land Speeder had a reflecting skirt, mirroring the sand beneath.

Blade Runner Spinner

Sinners have been used in several movies (See also The Fifth Element Taxi further in the list). Main characteristic is that the cars can take off vertically. In Blade Runner the Spinners are mainly used by the police to patrol the city. The Blade Runner spinner has been designed by Syd Mead.

Tumbler Batmobile

When Warner Bros decided to reboot the Batman franchise with Christopher Nolan at the helmet, the Batmobile was reinvented. Contrarily to previous Batmobile, the Tumbler was made around functionality. Instead of being one beautiful car with many gadgets, now it was a practical vehicle with rather ugly looks.

1990 Batmobile

When Batman made his first box office appearance on the widescreen, he needed a new car. Much meaner and darker than the 1954 Lincoln Ventura used in the TV series. Gotham was darker and so was the car.

The Batmobile in “Batman” (1990) was built on the longer platform of a Chevrolet Caprice, while producer Tim Burton opted for the platform of a Buick Riviera for “Batman Returns” (1992). The exterior of both Batmobiles was similar and all built-in gadgets were functional.

DeLorean Back to the Future

Who had ever thought that a car, based on a failure like the DLorean, could have become this iconic?
Although based on a fairly vanilla DeLorean, the BTTF car was a genuine flux-capacitor powered time machine. No one would have imagined the DeLorean could reach the needed 88mph to activate the time machine, but it really did (in the movies at least).

Lotus Esprit James Bond The Spy Who Loved Me

James Bond’s Lotus Esprit is probably the most understated Bond car but came with lots of special features: rear firing mud sprayers, full ‘underwater’ kit turning the car into a fully operative submarine, surface-to-air missiles, depth charges, underwater smoke screens and torpedoes. A Bond car as you’ld expect them.

Ecto-1 Ghostbusters (1959 Cadillac Ambulance)

The original Ecto 1 recently was listed on Ebay but with $45.100 the reserve was not met.

Motor Blade

Kaneda’s Bike – Akira

From the poplaur Akira movie, not much is known about Kaneda’s bike. Only very little information about the build and construction/design has been released. There is a big Japanese subculture, building replicas. You can often buy a customized replica.

The Fifth Element Taxi

The cab in The Fifth Element is a spinner car as well. All cars in this movie are spinners and there are very interesting trivia about the car designs and their decorations in the movie.

Speed Racer Mach 5

Speed Racer Mach 5 featured the same original button steering wheel as the car in the anime series. Most of time the car was hung from a crane and effects were computer generated.

Herbie

Although only a slightly modified VW Beetle, Herbie has managed to win the hearts of many kids and adults over the years.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Paragon Panther)

Bumblebee Transformers (1977/2009 Chevrolet Camaro)

Contrarily to in the series, Bumblebee is a Chevrolet Camaro in the 2007 feature Transformers and not a VW Beetle. According to Michael Bay, producer, Bumblebee stands at 17 foot tall as Autobot.

Honorable mentions

Mini Cooper S – The Italian Job 2003

KITT

- Doc Hudson – Cars (1951 Hudson Hornet)
- 14K’s 1980 Porsche 911 in Death Race

Space Robin

Growth in netbook sales has fast overtaken that of full-fledged notebooks and desktop computers. After all, they’re inexpensive, really portable and they’re usually considered cool. But recent research cited by NY Times and Computerworld indicates that some netbook users are unsatisfied with their purchases.

The disappointment with netbooks — NPD analyst Stephen Baker preferred that term rather than “dissatisfaction” — stemmed from expectations that a netbook was the same, more or less, as a laptop. Six out of every 10 netbook buyers, said Baker, thought that the two were equivalent, and figured that their new netbook would have the same functionality as a laptop.

I have been a netbook user for more than a year now. Since the first Eee PCs were shipped by Asus, I bought myself one. Since then, I’ve been trying different models from different brands. So far, I’ve been satisfied with performance.

It all boils down to expectations. And it depends on perspective, too.

Netbooks are practically the same as their full-fledged notebook counterparts. Mostly every component is miniaturized, and you would expect some tradeoffs there. The smaller screen and keyboard might not be as good for usability. But the portability is surely a key feature. The smaller parts might usually be slower, such as the hard drive or flash-based SSD, but they are designed for portability and sometimes for durability, as is the case with solid state drives. Their processing power might not be as hefty as with most modern, dual-core processors, but the low-power platform is supposed to give you longer battery life.

Because they can run the same software as you would on bigger computers, netbooks are supposed to be able to give the same functionality. Foremost of these is the ability to get you connected to the Internet. Perhaps that’s why they’re called “net” books–this what they are primarily intended for.

The issue here is about expectations. Some users purchase netbooks thinking, perhaps, that these can totally replace a desktop or notebook computer. To some extent this can be true. But people might be in for a disappointment if they will rely solely on their netbooks. I’ve purchased netbooks with the thought of using these as my mobile office when I’m on the go. But I don’t consider netbooks to be my primary computer. I still have a desktop and a laptop that I consider my main work machines.

If you purchase a netbook expecting to crunch hundreds of columns of spreadsheet figures, or to play the latest first-person-shooter, or to render videos, then you might be in for a disappointment. Sure, a netbook can probably handle these tasks, but will perform poorly. But if you expect to use a netbook to chat or catch up on emails while at a cafe, take notes during class, write a short report or letter while at the library, or check up on recipes online while at the kitchen, then these will perform satisfactorily or even wonderfully. It’s all about expectations.

Are you a netbook user? If so, are you satisfied with your netbook?

Happy 30th birthday Sony Walkman. You might’ve lost out a lot to the iPod but I’ll never forget your chunky cassette playing ’80s magic or your “can’t play the last track on a really full CD” Discman.

So, by way of small celebration here are ten images inspired by your greatness.

1. Hard-wired SonyEricsson Walkman phone. Neatness doesn’t come as standard

2. Great, let’s stick a huge replica of a Walkman phone on top of a metal stand because… well, because we can, OK?

3. Yeah, Stone Age Walkman usage FTW!

4. OK, what is it with BIG Walkmans? I know they were big anyway, but this Sports Walkman ain’t going jogging with you any time soon.

5. Wow, mashup. Fully functioning paper based Walkman, but using Sanyo tape player. Don’t get this wet.

6. C90 exposed! OK, not really a Walkman shot but evokes memories of fighting with cassettes when the machine decided to chew up the tape.

7. Sony in the 1980s. Gotta love it. “Once again Sony turns the world of headphones upside down”. What, by putting DRM on them?

8. Walkman pr0n! Definitely a lot of exposed components here – almost an orgy. WM-DD30 meets WM-DD33.

9. “I’m your father”. So true.

10. You’re looking at the phones, right? It’s what I go to trade fairs for…

Who is your favorite band of all time? Perhaps I will be disclosing my age with this statement but it does not matter: I think that U2 is the best band of all time. Sure, I have other favorite bands. My playlist contains lots of other songs by other artists. But at the end of the day, I would turn to U2 at my highest and lowest points.

So what does U2 have to do with Forever Geek?

A short background first: did you know that a Broadway version of Spiderman is in the works? Yes, comic book geeks may not be the most frequent patrons in Broadway, but this particular comic book hero has caught the attention of Broadway enthusiasts. And this is where U2 comes into the picture.

The band has accepted the offer to work on the music of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. I know, you might be weirded out by this combination. To begin with, a musical version may not seem to be the most brilliant idea. The band members said that they felt the initial sense of unease as well. However, “nature” prevailed in the end.

According to The Edge, they can relate very much to Peter Parker – more than Clark Kent, actually. He goes on to say that:

“He’s a human being. He’s a kid who came up through a regular high school and got bitten by a spider. Could happen to anyone! He’s sort of like every rock-and-roll star’s story in a weird way. Every rock-and-roll star probably started out as the geek that was bullied in school and eventually their form of revenge was to write songs, learn to play guitar, sing or play drums — and some of us ended up in big bands.”

That’s pretty much a confession that they are geeks too, huh?

Many of the team here at FG HQ are movie fans. I myself am a loser for title sequences in movies and over the years there have been some epic intros to movies. An amazing title sequence will catch your breath from the first second and immediately put you in the right mood for what follows. Today I am listing my favourite movie intro titles. This list is by no means a list of the best movie title sequences, it’s MY list. Feel free to recommend more titles though. :)

David Fincher Title Sequences

David Fincher is a specialist and usually pulls all stops out when creating title sequences. Therefore he deserves no less than 3 mentions in our list.

Fight Club

The title sequence in Fight Club is not always heralded as his best title sequence but defines the spirit of the movie from the first second: fast, mind-screwing (psychedelic almost) and full of delightful visuals. The title sequence was budgetted separately from the movie and the budget was only granted after the first movie previews were shown to the studio.

Panic Room

The title sequence of Panic Room is rather simple but has a mysterious feel to it. The title sequence is composed of shots of Manhattan with the names of the actors. Simple but it works well and creates a perfect ambiente for what follows.

Seven

The title sequence of Seven is probably one of the best title sequences in history. As soon as the sequence starts you realize that this movie is something different, you are going to watch something special. Weird and almost gory. This thriller will rock your socks!

Saul Bass

Saul Bass is more than just a name when it comes to titles sequences. Bass was the first one to make an art out of title sequences, he’s a legend. It would be way too boring and make our list too long if we added all the intro sequences by Saul Bass, so I will limit myself to only two.

Vertigo

The Master, Alfred Hitchcock, himself has worked regularly with Saul Bass, this resulting in several awesome title sequences. Although most of times the intro sequence of Psycho mentioned is to illustrate this awesome collaboration, I actually do prefer the work Bass did for the Vertigo opening credits.

North by Northwest

I don’t think this title and intro sequence requires any more information as it is mentioned on every single list.

<p.For more awesome work done by Saul Bass go to 37Signals.

Tomas Cobb: The Island of Dr. Moreau

There probably is very little one has to know about this movie. The movie was utterly uninteresting and boring, some might call it amusing, but the intro to the movie is ace and contains some amazing type motion.

Dominic Sena: Swordfish

The intro sequence of Swordfish admittedly lacked in creativity but the content, John Travolta’s dialogue, was so much better for it: biting criticism on Hollywood’s quality… in a Hollywood blockbuster.

Casino Royale

Casino Royale was the 21st film of the James Bond franchise and the first one with Daniel Craig.
The reboot of the franchise was not only a great movie in the real Bond spirit with an awesome Craig.
For the title sequence Daniel Kleinman used the original design of Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale, using cards and hearts. In the intro credits the silhouettes of the actors were integrated in the shadows of several digitally animated sequences.

Kyle Cooper: Mimic

Mimic is a 1997 science fiction horror movie directed by Guillermo del Toro. The title sequence make subtle usage of typography, insects and repeated patters. Although Guillermo del Toro not happy was with the movie, this intro is definitely worthwhile. We could not find an embeddable version of the intro, click the image below to watch the title sequence at The Art of the Title.

Image credits: The Art of the Title

Trainspotting

Trainspotting is an often forgotten title sequence, mainly because of the very _strong_ toilet scene immediately after the title credits. The intro perfectly resumes the pace and ridiculousity/hilarity of the movie at times though.

Catch Me If You Can

As far as I’m concerned a rather forgettable movie by Spielberg if it weren’t for the catching Pink Panther-alike title sequence.

The Fall

The Fall is what you get when you combine some of the best directors of the last 2 decades: Spike Jonze, David Fincher and Tarsem Singh. Make everything in black and white and you’re sure not to be disappointed.

Lord of War

The intro sequence of Lord of War can be resumed in some words only: Life of a bullet. In these few minutes you get taken on the bullet cam and follow the complete manufacturing process of a bullet

Dawn of The Dead: Remake

Zack Snyder’s remake start with an epic title sequence.

Natural Born Killers

Oliver Stone’s rendition of Tarantino’s script was full of wicked imaginery and animation, spiced up with lots of _humour_. The title scene to this thriller is no exception to this.

The Naked Gun 33 1/3

Most hilarious title sequence ever.

Last days have seen an increase in the number of new ridiculous USB sticks. We already reported the skate drive and the Post-It USB stick but things have gotten only worse since then.

Newest additions are the handmade Tokyo Cat (pictured at the right) and the USB Green Man. Obviously there is the Hello Kitty USB stick but that one is surprisingly discrete compared to the latest rage. It should be no surprise that there is a Obama USB drive too.

Maybe it’s just me and I have become an old and boring sod, but I usually am looking for the most discrete _bling_ and not etsy crafted gadgets on the $tarbuck$ table when I want to show off my luxurious lifestyle as always connected caffeine addicted worker.

On second thought I actually might love to start a collection of the most ridiculous USB drives!

iDuck USB Drive

When you see this picture first you immediately know its name has to be iDuck. Something just tells you that’s the only appropriate name for this drive. Popularity of the iDuck has been rather minimal, probably inexistent considered it costs a whopping $49.99 for 256MB space only. But you get integrated light in the duck for that price. Now think about going to the cafe with your shiny MacBook Air and digging your iDuck out of your pocket.

USB Shrimp from Solid Alliance

1GB and 4 different <strike>food varieties</strike> USB drive models: shrimp, crrab, caramel and even burger. Actually, the tomato is a USB hub.
Everything’s handcrafted. Bonus points for creativity but I can’t imagine putting this on my table when slurping an espresso doppio.

Kyoto CatBar USB Drive

One quick look at this picture can make you think of all the fantasies you could live out during bored and desperate nerd hours if only you buy more than one of these! But the fun comes with a price: $81.75 for just 2GB. If only they had integrated the connector somewhere under the neck and made a keyhanger out of this.

Wooden USB Oooms

Why, why, oh why?
I can see the appeal to ecologists who make biofuel from their leftover beer. Handmade too, so I suppose this drive actually is made from wood and I think the price’s handcrafted as well at $119.99 for 2GB.

Sushi & Dimsum USB Drives

Compared to the previous USB drives this almost looks acceptable. Almost I wrote!
I bet you’re in to catch quite some eyeballs and even more weird looks, probably even medical advice, when you plug these in to a black, nowadays almost a collector’s item, MacBook.

Barbie USB

This obviously is a handmade USB drive by someone who wanted to make it to 4Chan and I can’t imagine this ever going in to production, although Mattel has done the weirdest things lately. Actually… I could see a future for this. Anyone want to sell this to Mattel? Don’t bother about abusing their own trademark, tell them about the Hello Kitty rage and the need for a pink Barbie netbook.

Humping Dog USB Drive

If it comes from ThinkGeek it has be awwesome, doesn’t it? Wrong, wrong, WRONG! This humping dog USB drive, also available as crunching dog model, is just totally wrong. A fitness dog sticking out of your laptop? Perfect to keep your NADD up to par, but that’s about it.

Luckily, when it comes to weird USB drives, there is something for all the geeks among us. More than something.

Lupin The Third USB Drive

Eventhough GeekStuff4U responsible was for catastrophes like the Strawberry Doughnut USB drive, they deserve every credit not only for this awesome Lupus III drive but also for their excellent range of Star Wars USB Hubs.

Mr.Gadget 1GB USB 2.0 Executive Watch

Reading the name alone would be enough to make you freak out and fear the worst, but this watch actually looks acceptable. Not being a Casio watch it does not get an extra geek credit bonus, but the Mr. Gadget Executive USB watch has a decent look and even a Citizen alike chronograph. If only they could invent a Magsafe™ USB connector this could be perfect for any aspiring Bond among us.
And it’s on offer right now: $219.95.

Lego USB

Lego is an all-time favourite of geeks worldwide and best of all is that you can easily make your own model. The only limit is your own creativity and aptitude with Lego bricks.

C-3PO USB Drive

Mimobot, designer USB flash driver store par excellence, comes with this awesomely looking C-3PO, but also has many more great Star Wars, Happy Tree Friends and other drives. At $44/95 for a 4GB C-3PO this is a steal compared to the previous models we saw in this entry.

(Stores of all the USB drives are linked via the images)

140 Characters which have become a normal part of life for every geek now also are gathering really fast mainstream coverage and growing faster and faster non-stop.

Obviously I am speaking about Twitter. The Twitter leaderboard has undergone huge changes and tech-celebrities seem drop the rankings and it won’t last long anymore before the tech celebrities will end up where they belong on the Twitter scale of popularity: in oblivion.

I took a look at the geek _real_ celebrities using Twitter at this moment and why, if you should follow them. Obviously there are huge advantages at following an Oscar-winner. Believe me it makes much more fun to make fun of them than poking at blowhard like Scobleizer. ;)

So which geek celebrity uses Twitter today?

Geeks on Twitter

Stephen Fry · @stephenfry

It was obvious that we had to start with the British übernerd, owner of the 2nd Apple computer in Europe, loved by both techies and regular variety fans. Stephen is one of the biggest adepts of Twitter and uses it for everything from his daily walking exercise to announcement of his new man bag.
Stephen Fry’s followership has quintupled in less than 2 months and it seems that he soon will reach #1 and knock off the (then) electoral candidate campaign team of Barack Obama.

Money tweet: Tourette’s, you runty bastard. # (answering the question ‘if you were a patient on House, what disease/ailment/general unpleasantness would you prefer to have? DON’T SAY LUPUS!’)
Twitterholic rank on 02/15/2008: 3
Follow-worthy? Definitely. @stephenfry is a Twitter sitcom.

Jonathan Ross · @wossy

The British presentator and movie, Japan and comic geek has been on Twitter since little more than 2 months and is about to break the mark of 100.000 followers. Wossy’s tweetstream is mainly dominated by responses to followers and in the early days he was everyone’s help to find other British celebs on Twitter.
Money-Tweet: Must go to give wife support and make concerned and caring sounds while we try to get her ‘puter fixed. Bye. #
Twitterholic rank on 02/15/2008: 11
Follow-worthy? No, too much of twoise.

John Cleese · @JohnCleese

John Cleese needs very little intro and if you don’t know him, what are you doing reading here? John Cleese is a real gadget geek btw.
Money-Tweet: some people spout complete twaddle. they could be spouting incomplete twaddle and leaving the remaining twaddle for us. thoughtless! #
Twitterholic rank on 02/15/2008: 23
Follow-worthy? Obviously. Although his tweets often contain links, it’s John Cleese FTW! And don’t forget the Twitter Movie.

MCHammer · @MCHammer

Every geek mid-thirties will probably remember the Hammer (those who don’t know the Hammer, listen to U Can’t Touch This at last.fm). MC Hammer now also is an investor in a ‘Web2.0′ company DanceJam.
Money-Tweet: Next Life, I roam the Cosmos as an “Invincible” enforcing the statutes of God on the “dark invisible” and traversing upon a melody #
Twitterholic rank on 02/15/2008: 25
Follow-worthy? Depends. If you’re a fan of the Hammer or DanceJam addict yes. Otherwise not really.

Shaquille O’Neal · @THE_REAL_SHAQ

One could argue whether the Shaq a geek is or not, but his followers know that he is a real nerd! A nerd of txt speak!
Shaquille uses Twitter ,ainly from his phone and enhances a fun dialogue with his followers. He also asks them for advice.
Money-Tweet: Some rumors are planted for a reaction, i dnt react, i act , have u seen kazaam, i kno terrible, lol #
Twitterholic rank on 02/15/2008: 28
Follow-worthy? Absolutely. The Shaq is too funny not to follow. here’s another money-Tweet: ‘Ok i admit it i at performance enhancing frosted flakes 2 yrs ago, lol’#.

Dave Matthews · @DaveJMatthews

Another music nerd in our list is Dave Matthews from, yes the Dave Matthews Band. With more than 10 tweets/day on average Dave Matthews certainly is one of the more active celebrities on Twitter, even though the majority of these are answers to his followers.
Money-Tweet: it is great to be recognized. I would be lying if I said getting a Grammy didn’t feel good. But the best is so subjective. #
Twitterholic rank on 02/15/2008: 38
Follow-worthy? A must for fans otherwise too much twoise.

Ashton Kutcher · @aplusk

The reason why Ashton Kutcher made our list is because he majored in biochemical engineering. Ashton often has cosy chitterpatter sessions with Demi Moore (@mrskutcher) on Twitter. Sometimes he even surprises with the odd psychological statement.
Money-Tweet: is it odd that it’s illegal for people to urinate outdoors but not illegal for dogs? why do dogs get to have all the fun? #
Twitterholic rank on 02/15/2008: 48
Follow-worthy? Meh.

John Hodgman · @hodgman

Many will think who the frak is John Hodgman, but if I tell you ‘I’m a PC’ from then you all say ‘Aaahhh!’.
Hodgman is not only actor in the popular ‘Get a Mac’ ads from Apple but also a genuine BSG nerd (He appeared in last night;’s episode ‘No Exit’ – Oops it has not aired in the UK yet :S) and has written many satire and appeared several times on TV. He also is the starter/creator of the internet hobo meme.

Money-Tweet: Silver said in 4 words what some people are currently taking 18 minutes of flash powerpoint to say: The predictable is designable. #
Twitterholic rank on 02/15/2008: 65
Follow-worthy? If you’re a Mac-head it is obligatory to follow @hodgman.

Sheldon Cooper, PhD · @sheldoncooper

Sheldon Cooper, PhD is *THE* Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon is an übernerd and if you understand all his jokes, you are reading the correct site.
Sheldon is on Twitter exactly as he is in the series: snarky, sarcastic and ad rem.
Money-Tweet: I will NOT join you on Blip.fm and it is NOT like Twitter for music. #
Twitterholic rank on 02/15/2008: 2306
Follow-worthy? Following @sheldoncooper is a must!.

Agent M · @Agent_M

Agent M is a Marvel writer, editor and blogger. His Twitter popularity has shown tenfold growth over the last month, also helped by a give-away of Marvel items some weeks ago.
Agent M is a very active Tweep with on many days more than 100 tweets.
Money-Tweet: Caught up on the Office…and wine…and now very sleepy. Time to pass out. #
Twitterholic rank on 02/15/2008: 49
Follow-worthy? Following Agent M would be compulsory for every geek if it weren’t for the incredible twoise Agent M creates.

Honorable Mentions

@michael_phelps: Swim and pott nerd;

@algore: he of ‘I have invented the internet’ fame and user of 3 30″ Mac screens on his desk. Co-owner of Current.com;

@freddurst: Another music nerd. Leader of Limp Bizkit.

Obviously you should also follow Forever Geek on Twitter. :)

The Battlestar Galactica Series coming to an end and the (main) characters are dropping like flies.

To review the whole reimagined series before they reach the ultimate climax, we thought it were time to round up all the characters and publish a list of our 15 Best Battlestar Galactica Characters.
The list is based on the complexity of the characters and their persona. It played no role if the character only appeared in only some episodes.

15. Lee “Apollo” Adama

The character of Lee Adama could have been much more intriguing and never really climbs up to become one of the stronger, better persona in the series, mainly because of poor acting compared to author characters.

Lee certainly was at his best as CAG of the Battlestar Galactica and in the period of self-conflict about which side to chose. Lee’s best scenes are arguably the moments when he stands up against the military decisions of his father, Admiral William Adama.

14. Scar

Scar is a Raider fighter, so called because of the battle damage endured over time. Scar is feared and has destroyed many vessels from the fleet, separating them from their wingmates.
The hunt for Scar starts a escalates the rivalry between Starbuck and Kat, who will eventually kill the feared hunter. Featuring in only one episode Scar is an exception in this list because of the fear and terror he manages to create among the squad

13. Lieutenant Sharon “Athena” Agathon

Sharon Athena, Number Eight, had as task to seduce Helo and then become pregnant, but things went wrong and she fell in love with Helo. As first Cylon in the series to show genuine feelings, she later managed it to win the trust of President Laura Roslin and Admiral Adama, becoming a trusted crew member of the Galactica.

12. Number Five, AKA Litmus Doral

Number Five appears to be among the most anti-human Cylons seen in the series. Five is downloaded frequently and always insists on humans capitulating without any resistance. Five considers Cylons as the kids of the humans, who will rule when the parents time has ended.

One of the copies of Number Five, Litmus, is a suicide bomber on board of the Galactica.

11. Louanne Katraine

Kat, a former drug-runner on Caprica, is selected as candidate Viper pilot because of her previous fly experience. Soon she develops as a psychological opponent of Kara Trace, who is her instructor.

Kat is headstrong, arrogant and a very driven pilot. This ultimately earns her the title of Top Gun on board of the Galactica, after she kills Scar.

10. Admiral Helena Cain

Admiral Helena Cain, from the colony Tauron, was Admiral of the Battlestar Pegasus. Although rather unpopular as a character, mainly because of the decisions she made when escaping the Cylon attack on the 12 colonies and for her attitude towards Admiral Adama, she certainly is one of the strongest women in the series.
Shot by Gina Inviere, in Resurrection Ship, Part II, she only appeared in 3 episodes but her character was revised in the movie Razor.

9. Tom Zarek

Tom Zarek, former political activist, is a charismatic power-hungry character. Torn between winning the sympathy of the people in charge and his own need for hunger, he shows his true and not really democratic nature several times. During the whole series he always sides with the camp most likely to offer him more power.

Under the reign of President Baltar, he becomes Vice-President and subsequently President when Baltar Gaius goes missing. Surprisingly he then offers Laura Roslin to opportunity to become President again in exchange for a role in the new government. He then proceeds to chase Gaius whom he now considers being a traitor and collaborator. Like these there are many more plans Zarek had before his execution, but every time his charisma manages to gather popularity among the fans.

8. President Laura Roslin

President Roslin is an admirable woman, taking the task up to save humanity from the Cylons. At first she is a fierce opponent of Admiral Adama’s decisions but with time both start to collaborate more and more. Laura Roslin clearly has and influence on the Admiral and due to her he becomes more democratic with time. It is obvious a relationship between both will grow, although I might have preferred to wait a little longer for the confirmation.

I doubt her relationship with William Adama makes this powerful and driven woman climb up our personal ranks as it seems hard to forgive her for having thrown Adama in the brig.

During the entire series Laura Roslin not only fights the Cylons but also a case of terminal cancer.

7. Colonel Saul Tigh

Perfectly played, Colonel Tigh is a rather disillusioned person in life, but a good soul. Just like Admiral Adama, Saul Tigh carries lots of baggage with him. Tigh also is an alcoholic.
Tigh has no real aims in life anymore and clearly suffers under the burden of life. He is satisfied with his role within the Fleet and aspires no higher role within the military. In times of absence of Adama it is clear that he would rather not prefer to be the Commanding Officer.

The bona fide character of Colonel Saul Tigh is only emphasized in a personal conversation with Admiral Adama after their return from Earth. Tigh values friendship over Cylonship.

6. Gaius Baltar

Gaius Baltar is at times hard to like because of the complexity of his persona. What makes Baltar hard to get are all the flaws he has and publicly displays. And his freak-outs.
His instability, and often his desire to be a Cylon, make this character rather unlikely not to be helped by his egocentric behavior. Technically one of the most complex characters of the series.

Most of all, Gaius has the honor of having a relationship with Caprica Six (or had one… he thinks). We hate him forever for this.

5. Leoben Conoy, AKA Number Two

Displaying as first character the weakness of Cylons for radiation in a stand-off with Admiral Adama, Leoben always fares a harsh anti-human course.

Leoben is specialized in seeding doubts and mis-information. His obsession with Kara Thrace borders the psychotic and it wouldn’t surprise me if it were revealed that Leoben is Starbuck’s father.

4. Dr. S. Cottle

Dr. Cottle, Battlestar Galactica’s Chief Mediacal Officer, is possibly the most charming and funnest character in the series. His (politically incorrect) smoking habit is perfectly timed and often makes one grin.

Although Dr. Cottle prefers to stay neutral in political matters, he was called upon faking the death of Hera tarnishing slightly his persona. He is a long term friend of Admiral Adama and also one of the few on board of the Battlestar Galactica who will occasionally speak up to the Commander.

3. Number Six

Let’s get things right: Number Six is the Sci-Fi fans’ and nerds’ dream. Period.

Other than that, the character is awesomely profiled and very complex, due to the different variations of Number Sixes. Predator alike but also caring. And bearer of Saul Tigh’s child, the first 100% Cylon Baby.

Have I mentioned Number Six is smokingly hot?

2. Captain Kara “Starbuck” Thrace

Having grown up with the original series it may have sounded weird some years ago had I said that some day I would laugh at Dirk Benedict for his “Starbuck” character, but this frakkin’ <strike>bitch</strike> blonde surely made that statement become true. Today it seems almost impossible to think that Starbuck should not be a woman.

Kara Thrace is another very complex character in the series, not just because she’s a woman. We would almost forget that if it weren’t for her permanent romantic escapades. We’ll forgive her this weakness.

1. Admiral William Adama

Admiral William Adama is without any doubt the most charismatic and best character of the series. Although at times his choices are purely militaristic and maybe unpopular there is no doubt that he always aims to achieve the best for his crew and the survivors even. He considers the task to keep humanity alive his task. This surely comes from his personal background, having had a harsh life himself.

Just A Bit Off…

Just A Bit Off… by Jeff Zugale is a popular relationship comedy comic. Your online sitcom. It is a rather popular genre and always good for a laugh. Just A Bit Off is published on Mondays and Thursdays.

Garfield Minus Garfield

Garfield Minus Garfield is at times even better than the regular comic. From the description:

Garfield Minus Garfield is a site dedicated to removing Garfield from the Garfield comic strips in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain young Mr. Jon Arbuckle. It is a journey deep into the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb.

A Softer World

A Softer World by Emily Horne and Joey Comeau has turned 7 last weekend. The comic concept is based on picture strips or single pictures sliced up with some dose of snark.
You might also want to read Overqualified, a series of application letters written by Joey, but they come without pictures.

AppleGeeks

AppleGeeks just has it all: ‘Friends’ alike sitcom humour and story line, spiced up with robots, fun t-shirts and lots of geekery.

Kitty Hawk

Kitty Hawk is a webcomic by Vincent LaBate and Braden D. Lamb about a female pilot in 1930s Seattle. Every Friday 2 pages are published.

Traffic & Weather

The title of this webcomic by Rob Ullman hints at what you can expect, but it isn’t all complaining and moaning. Traffic & Weather is a real life based comic and published on a weekly base in Richmond Magazine.

XKCD

XKCD is a webcomic which doesn’t need any further explanation anymore. A slight tech background can help understanding most puns. ;)

XKCD Store

Perry Bible Fellowship

The Perry Bible Fellowship by Nicholas Gurewitch hasn’t been updated since 2008 anymore but still is good for an occasional laugh. If you don’t like dry and very sarcastic humor this comic, previously published in the Guardian, might not be your cup of espresso.

Indexed

Jessica Hagy’s collection of index cards analyse life is a relational sense. Or something like that. Indexed has been published on weekdays since 2006 and received much of coverage in the media. Indexed also has been released as a book.

The Small Picture

Not really a webcomic The Small Picture is “a battle of wits of sorts” between Nostrich and Aedison. They use pictures from The Boston’s Big Picture and add some snarky commentary, wits to the picture.

Ruben & Lullaby

Ruben & Lullaby is a “comic” of the special kind. Available for $2.99 in the App Store this is more a game than a comic, the publishers call it opertoon and by shaking your iPhone you can create emotions in the characters or even make them break up.

I have added a link to the online shop of most of these webcomics. If you like the work of the crew behind them, have a look at their shop as oftern their shop is the only base revenue for their work.
And do not forget to tell me about your favourite comics, I’m always looking for new stuff comics, even if I have another 40-50 comics to add to this list.

It seems that every year more and more comic books and graphic novels are making the passage from the page to the big screen. Hollywood has cottoned on that not only are these art forms quite often full of great stories but they come complete with an already made fan base who will flock to the silver screen to see their heroes brought to life.

It is with this passion in mind that Ive pulled together a list of forthcoming (and in one case now out) movies that originated in a comic book or graphic novel.

Punisher: War Zone

Date: Now

The only film in this entire listing that is now available for viewing (it was only released here in the UK on Friday); its safe to say that unless youre a die-hard fan then you are probably going to be okay about missing this. It isnt to say that Ray Stevenson does a bad job at being Frank Castle or that jigsaw doesnt look cool, but the action is fairly derivative and to be honest I preferred Thomas Janes outing as the man with the black t-shirt featuring the white skull motif.

Website – Trailer – Rotten Tomatoes Review

Watchmen

Date: 6 March 2009

Arguably one of the most eagerly awaited titles for all geeks this year, Watchmen brings to the big screen a graphic novel featuring an epic story, flawed characters, moral dilemmas and superheroes without powers. The story is set in the 1980s and the Doomsday Clock is set to 5 minutes to midnight, so tensions are running high between the US and the USSR. Rorschach (a masked vigilante) investigates the murder of hero, only to discover the plot gets much thicker.

Alan Moores graphic novel of the same name should provide excellent material but my top tip for this one is to read it in its original form before going to see the film. Whilst Moore wont have anything to do with the movie adaptation, Im fairly certain that everything weve seen so far is showing that this is going to be quite faithful in look and feel but perhaps most importantly will offer a lot even for those who dont know of the graphic novel.

website – Trailer

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Wolverine proved very quickly to be one of the most popular characters following the screen adaptation of the X-men comic book, so it should be no surprise that his movie comes out first. Hugh Jackman reprises his role as the eponymous character, meanwhile we see a host of other characters appear from the Marvel/X-Men universe including Deadpool, Sabretooth (Liev Schriber), Silver Fox, Gambit, The Blob and more. Should you be excited? Oh yes, the action looks great and Im expecting big things after the frankly poor X-Men: The Last Stand

Website – Trailer

Thor

Date: 16 July 2010

Im a bit baffled why Kenneth Branagh is going to be directing Thor, but there we are. The plot is apparently going to feature Dr Donald Blake a disabled physician who has an alter ego inside of him none other than The Mighty Thor! For me, this one could go either way. Im hoping that it isnt too far out there, but as it is quite a while away I didnt find too much info out on it. More info as it comes but I’ve heard a range of names mentioned for the role of Thor, including wrestler Triple H!

Sin City 2

Date: 2010

Unfortunately still listed in preproduction (so whether it will make 2010 is debateable) but the best received graphic novel to hit the big screen barring 300 was Sin City. Should the sequel live up to the original then this should definitely be a film on your list. This title is also known as A Dame To Kill For and covers the story of the same name along with an unshelved Nancy Story and some short stories. It will return with the same look and feel and no doubt excellent action set pieces. Definitely one to see.

The First Avenger: Captain America

Date: 2011

After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America’s ideals. Theres talk of this being a period piece, which could be quite interesting. The title indicates that this may well be the first of several Avenger films though whether you like your superheroes on their own or all together may decide on how youll view such a film. Im not a big fan of Cap but I am going to withhold judgement until weve seen a little more.

Iron Man 2

Date: 2010

Marvel Studios completely self-financed Iron Man, and Im fairly sure that they are quite happy that they did so, given that it was such as resounding success. In the sequel, Robert Downey Jr returns to play Tony Stark in what appears to be a role he was born to play. Still not sure on the plot of this one, but there has been talk of Whiplash/Backlash as well as Crimson Dynamo. Don Cheadle is in whilst Terrance Howard is out for the role of War Machine/Jim Rhodes.

Other Films Of Note Coming Soon:

Super Max (2010) Green Arrow
Green Lantern (2010)
Ant-Man (2010)
Dead of Night (2009) Dylan Dog
Spider-Man 4

System administrators our a special kind of species with lots of attitude… and lots of power. Imagine how they can annoy you when they decide to throttle your bandwith at work or worse even restrict your internet access. Therefore they also like to show off their superiority with shirts like this Bow before me model.
I am aware of that this list isn’t complete at all, but now you should now what t-shirts most geeks love. I have left the binary classic There are only 10 kind of people… out on person because I can think of at least 10 people who don’t understand it but have that shirt. Suck it!

Also watch out for our upcoming Valentine Gifts for Your Geek special next week.

I’m a sucker for addictive flash games. I don’t know about you, but I think the best video games are almost always simple and fun. Flash games tend to have both qualities.

Now, I know that Flash games often don’t have much depth. But that’s ok for me. I just like to jump in and have some mindless fun. And Flash games do that for me.

TechCult put together a list of the 150 Best Flash Games currently available. Lots of new gems on that list that I hadn’t seen before.

What do you think of their list? Are there some great games they left out?
