At the beginning of the week, I posted something about Pi Day (which, by the way, got a lot of mixed reactions; some thought it stupid while many others thought it cool). I just found out that this week, March 15-19 is also Geek The Library Week – at least in the United States.

Geek The Library Week is basically an awareness campaign that aims to promote the local library. While there are people who totally get how important libraries are in education and self development, not everyone really gets involved. Indeed, in this age of instant information (via various media), hardly anyone ever goes to the library on a regular basis. Local libraries are in serious need of funding and might even be in danger of “extinction.”

The driving force behind the campaign is the famous couple Bill and Melinda Gates. Their foundation has partnered up with the OCLC as well as Leo Burnett USA. The former is a non-profit consortium of libraries while the latter is a marketing agency. With these kinds of players in the game, I have high hopes for the campaign.

So how can you get involved in geeking the library? The campaign is basically an awareness program and a chance for YOU and ME to show our support to the library. Whatever you do, it doesn’t have to be a big thing. Visit their web site at Geek The Library to find out various ways by which you can participate. When you visit the site, start by answering the questions in the pop up box. It won’t take you a minute, and you just might make a difference!

Let’s get our geeks on and support local libraries!

Now, I do not really have to explain to you the reason behind today being Pi Day, do I? In case the obvious is lost on you, check the date. Today is March 14, 2010. In figures, that 3/14/2010. Now you’re catching on…

The official web site for this holiday can be found at Pi Day. Just to refresh your memory, here is a little something from the official web site:

Pi, Greek letter ( ), is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th. Pi = 3.1415926535…

With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating. The symbol for pi was first used in 1706 by William Jones, but was popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.

Through the web site, you can actually send a greeting to your geeky friends who would love to celebrate Pi Day with you. The options via an eCard, via Twitter, or via Facebook. Whichever venue you choose, you will be sure to impress those who care.

Here’s another piece of trivia – today is Albert Einstein’s birthday as well! Now how’s that for coincidence? Check out your local geek hangouts; there’s probably free pie going around. No pun intended.

With the proliferation of URL shortening services like TinyURL, Bit.Ly and Ow.ly, it has become loads easier for people to engage in link bait tactics by masking the SEO-friendly permalink with random gibberish. And yeah, it makes using services like Twitter more link friendly (it really goes without saying that apps like TweetDeck have auto URL shortening to make links more Tweet-friendly). ShadyURL does the opposite — since the more wary web denizens are aware of malicious links, why join the bandwagon? My only thing with ShadyURL is that it defeats the purpose of shorter URL’s for Twitter.

For instance, if we try to turn ForeverGeek.com’s URL shady, we get:

http://5z8.info/-OPEN WEBCAM—START RECORD–_n4n0_pornnow

Thanksgiving is less than a week away, and for those who celebrate this holiday, things are probably getting quite hectic at this point. For those who do not really give a darn about Thanksgiving, why not take the time to reflect and think about what you have to be thankful for?

I actually got the idea from Matt Blum over at Geek Dad, who came up with a list of 10 Geeky Things To Be Thankful For. It inspired me to create my own list – albeit a shorter one, with a couple of items similar to his. Here goes.

1.	Online shopping. It’s not just for geeks, but those of us who love to buy gadgets and other geeky stuff (TOYS!) can do so without having to leave the comforts of home. We can find practically anything and everything that we want at a few clicks of the mouse.

2.	Easy access to the Internet. Connectivity is the word. I still remember having to go to Internet shops about 10 years ago. Slow connections, sucky computers – that’s what we had to put up with. Today, I can go online anywhere and everywhere, thanks to wireless networks!

3.	Gadgets are so much cheaper. I have always been a sucker for electronics, but I never thought that I would be able to afford a lot of things that I have now. From gigantic (storage space wise) hard drives to mp3 players to cameras – practically anyone can afford any gadget these days.

What’s on your geeky Thanksgiving list?

Who would want to see Steve Jobs in his birthday clothes? How about Bill Gates? Well, I know I wouldn’t! But we have to admit – there are geeks who are smokin’ hot, and this is what the Nude London Tech calendar has to offer everyone.

Forget those run-of-the-mill calendars with sexy girls and cars; or even those calendars with firemen playing with fire and water. The Nude London Tech calendar will blow your geeky minds away! Naturally, I chose that picture above, but there are also geek chicks featured in the calendar.

The brainchild of Milo Yiannopoulos, this calendar showcases the IT pioneers of London. There are 24 of them, all stripped down to their skins. Of course, laptops and cables have been strategically situated in order to cover up some areas – leaving things to the viewer’s imagination. Yiannopolous says that, with the release of the calendar, he aims to debunk the popular misconception that geeks are unattractive people. (I say preach it Milo!)

He also aims to help a specific charitable organization in India, called Take Heart India. This group provides funding for training in IT and business for disabled people in the said country. While it started out as a joke, the idea bloomed into reality, and Yiannopolous is now aiming to sell 5,000 (at least) copies of the calendar.

The calendar comes at a very affordable ₤10 at Firebox. I was going to buy a dragon calendar (maybe for another post) but perhaps I should get this one as well. You can never have enough calendars anyway, right?

You’ll need:
2 vanilla pods
500ml double cream
70g sugar
3 egg yolks
How to make it:
1. Cut each vanilla pod down its length and extract the precious seeds. Add the pods only (not the seeds) to the cream and boil it.
2. When the mixture is boiling, add the sugar and stir.
3. Find a large bowl and whisk three egg yolks.
4. Stir the double cream mixture into the egg yolks.
5. Now take the mixture and pour it into another bowl, through a sieve.
6. Stir in the precious vanilla seeds.
7. Find a dish suitable for the freezer, and place the mixture in the freezer.
8. Wait 2-3 hours.
9. Take the ice cream out of the freezer. Take a flat knife and chisel the Apple logo into the top of the frozen ice cream. Announce it to your guests with the phrase, “One more thing…”

Up there’s the recipe from Crave, which apparently is part of Steve Jobs’ effort to get better after his much talked about illness. I wish I could be given these kinds of recipes for health reasons as well!

How much effort do you put into improving yourself? I am NOT talking about the physical aspect, but more of the intellectual aspect. Alright, maybe it is a given that you are smarter than all the people around you put together; but to put a different spin to that famous Forrest Gump quote, smart is as smart does. Admit it, we all need to do some reading and studying in order to keep up with the times.

Self-improvement need not be expensive, thanks to the FREE online courses that are available to practically anyone that I stumbled upon. The web site, Online Courses, offers “100 Incredible Open Courses for the Ultimate Tech Geek,” and let me tell you this: the courses are indeed incredible!

Here’s a sampling of what they have. The general categories are as follows:

1.	Computer Science and Engineering
2.	Computer Security
3.	Programming
4.	The Web
5.	Software
6.	Information Technology
7.	Communication Technology
8.	Technology in Education
9.	Tech Math
10.	Technology and Society

Under each category, you will find the individual courses, all available for FREE. The courses are offered by various institutions which are already well known in their fields. Does MIT ring a bell? How about Teachers Without Borders? Relevant information such as the level of the course, requirements, etc. can be had by clicking on the appropriate course title.

I have to say that this is a perfect way to “kill time” when you find yourself without anything to do on the weekend. It’s a much more productive use of your time and you benefit from it!

Who said geeks don’t celebrate Halloween? I am willing to bet a month’s salary (not much, I have to admit) that there will be countless Spocks, Darth Vaders, and other similar characters at parties this weekend. But have you ever thought of carving that pumpkin based on the current social media trends? I honestly haven’t, but the guys at Mashable did an excellent job featuring 12 of the coolest social media pumpkin carvings for Halloween.

You should check the full article out, but here’s a tiny glimpse of what’s in store for you. Needless to say, they’re the ones that made my blood flow more quickly.

Twitter’s Fail Whale – who does not recognize this creature? Twitter has received a lot of flak for its intermittent service, although we have to admit is has become much better. Still, the fail whale has earned its place in history.
Firefox and IE – I use Chrome now since Firefox started to crash on me all the time about a month ago, and I haven’t used IE since forever, but these pumpkins still look awesome, don’t they?

Reddit – I love how they used a reddish hue for the lighting inside the pumpkin. This alien is cuter than ET, in my opinion.

Apple – of course. I could have thought of this myself if I didn’t see Mashable’s write up first (yeah right). A geek pumpkin fest will not be complete without an Apple carving, don’t you think? Maybe you can use Steve Job’s face for a more unique carving?

I am talking about literally tasting! No, I have not gone bonkers – why would anyone get a hankering for Rubik’s cube as a meal or a snack? Then again, you probably have not seen these wonderful concoctions yet.

Now does that look familiar? How about this other one?

These are cakes that were made by some really creative AND geeky minds. Now who’s to say that creative and geeky do not go together?

The first cake was baked by Sarenea for someone’s piano recital. Her post says that the special guy is called Corvat (now that’s a nice name!) and I bet he got a thrill out of his surprise. The cake is a three-layer cake with white and green on the other sides. Now this Rubik’s cube is all solved, so it’s easy to dig in without worrying about how to solve the puzzle.

The second cake was made by Tanya for an 80’s themed party. It’s a chocolate cake and this is how she describes it, courtesy of Walyou:

The chocolate cake was cut from a 250 x 350 cm slab tin, each square is 6″ and 2″ high, the top two tiers are on a small cake board for support. Covered in chocolate buttercream and black fondant, the colored squares were cut using a ribbon cutter then adhered to the cake with a little water. I used a metal ruler to mark an indented line between each row. I would recommend using a real Rubik cube to get the colored squares in the right place, this cake is impossible to solve!

So which one do you prefer? Personally, I prefer Tanya’s, if only because the cube is unsolved.

We certainly love our movies here at Forever Geek. In many movies cars play a very big role and we are fans of cars as well. Actually there are three things we particularly like in/about movies: Great movie title sequences, special effects and robots and last but not least cars.
So we went ahead and compiled a list of the geekiest cars in movies.

While selecting these cars it was imperative for us that we chose only modified cars, so no Eleanor (Shelby GT500).

Gadgetmobile

The Gadgetmobile is based on a 1964 Lincoln Continental Convertible and designed by Brenda Bradford. The Gadgetmobile can speak, track Inspector Gadget’s location, camouflage itself and move its tires upwards, among other things and thinks its stands above the laws (and does not need to respect speed limits).

American Graffiti Hot Rod

Millner’s yellow hot rod in American Graffiti is a ‘34 Ford Coupe, carrying custom “THX 138″ license plates, which refer to THX 1138, George Lucas’ first movie.

Fab1 Thunderbird

The Fab1 in the 2004 Thunderbirds movie was a heavily modified Ford THunderbird and provided by the company itself. The Thunderbird on 6 wheels is completely road legal and has been featured in Top Gear. The car has bullet-proof, run-flat tires but ca not fly.

Minority Report Lexus 2054

The Lexus 2054 in Minority Report is a concept car running on fuel cells, with advanced safety features, including biometric security systems.
The car, painted in blue this time, also features in Micael Bay’s The Island.

I, Robot Audi RSQ

Built on the chassis of an A4 this Audi concept car, designed for product placement has 2 reverse butterfly doors and the Multi Media Interface (MMI) driver-to-car control system.
This collaboration was a first for Audi and similar to the previously mentioned Lexus concept car in Minority Report.

Judge Dredd Land Rover

22 Land Rovers 101 Forward Control were converted with fiberglass bodies for the movie Judge Dredd and only one had a functional interior for inside shots. The NY Cab is not road legal and had no floors. To see out the windshield you had to tilt your head to one side or the other and lean forward, this basically requiring a second person on board to look out for traffic.

Star Wars Land Speeder

Luke Skywalker’s Land Speeder actually was a modified car. Numerous problems hiding the wheels were encountered. Easiest was to photograph the car from angles not showing the wheels. In longer scenes the Land Speeder had a reflecting skirt, mirroring the sand beneath.

Blade Runner Spinner

Sinners have been used in several movies (See also The Fifth Element Taxi further in the list). Main characteristic is that the cars can take off vertically. In Blade Runner the Spinners are mainly used by the police to patrol the city. The Blade Runner spinner has been designed by Syd Mead.

Tumbler Batmobile

When Warner Bros decided to reboot the Batman franchise with Christopher Nolan at the helmet, the Batmobile was reinvented. Contrarily to previous Batmobile, the Tumbler was made around functionality. Instead of being one beautiful car with many gadgets, now it was a practical vehicle with rather ugly looks.

1990 Batmobile

When Batman made his first box office appearance on the widescreen, he needed a new car. Much meaner and darker than the 1954 Lincoln Ventura used in the TV series. Gotham was darker and so was the car.

The Batmobile in “Batman” (1990) was built on the longer platform of a Chevrolet Caprice, while producer Tim Burton opted for the platform of a Buick Riviera for “Batman Returns” (1992). The exterior of both Batmobiles was similar and all built-in gadgets were functional.

DeLorean Back to the Future

Who had ever thought that a car, based on a failure like the DLorean, could have become this iconic?
Although based on a fairly vanilla DeLorean, the BTTF car was a genuine flux-capacitor powered time machine. No one would have imagined the DeLorean could reach the needed 88mph to activate the time machine, but it really did (in the movies at least).

Lotus Esprit James Bond The Spy Who Loved Me

James Bond’s Lotus Esprit is probably the most understated Bond car but came with lots of special features: rear firing mud sprayers, full ‘underwater’ kit turning the car into a fully operative submarine, surface-to-air missiles, depth charges, underwater smoke screens and torpedoes. A Bond car as you’ld expect them.

Ecto-1 Ghostbusters (1959 Cadillac Ambulance)

The original Ecto 1 recently was listed on Ebay but with $45.100 the reserve was not met.

Motor Blade

Kaneda’s Bike – Akira

From the poplaur Akira movie, not much is known about Kaneda’s bike. Only very little information about the build and construction/design has been released. There is a big Japanese subculture, building replicas. You can often buy a customized replica.

The Fifth Element Taxi

The cab in The Fifth Element is a spinner car as well. All cars in this movie are spinners and there are very interesting trivia about the car designs and their decorations in the movie.

Speed Racer Mach 5

Speed Racer Mach 5 featured the same original button steering wheel as the car in the anime series. Most of time the car was hung from a crane and effects were computer generated.

Herbie

Although only a slightly modified VW Beetle, Herbie has managed to win the hearts of many kids and adults over the years.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Paragon Panther)

Bumblebee Transformers (1977/2009 Chevrolet Camaro)

Contrarily to in the series, Bumblebee is a Chevrolet Camaro in the 2007 feature Transformers and not a VW Beetle. According to Michael Bay, producer, Bumblebee stands at 17 foot tall as Autobot.

Honorable mentions

Mini Cooper S – The Italian Job 2003

KITT

- Doc Hudson – Cars (1951 Hudson Hornet)
- 14K’s 1980 Porsche 911 in Death Race

Space Robin

555Kubik has released a documentary around the theme “How would it be if a house was dreaming?”

The conception of this project consistently derives from its underlying architecture – the theoretic conception and visual pattern of the Hamburg Kunsthalle. The Basic idea of narration was to dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O. M. Ungers “Galerie der Gegenwart”. Resultant permeabilty of the solid facade uncovers different interpretations of conception, geometry and aesthetics expressed through graphics and movement. A situation of reflexivity evolves – describing the constitution and spacious perception of this location by means of the building itself.

Because of this – or maybe the reason for this (is) – travel costs have gone down considerably. Whether you are a geek or not, travel is probably at the top of your list. And if you are looking for the most interesting trips you can go on, look no further than the new travel guide The Geek Atlas.

Written by John Graham-Cumming, The Geek Atlas showcases the most significant places on earth. Significant in what way? Well, this travel book’s full title is The Geek Atlas: 128 Places Where Science and Technology Come Alive.

The title pretty much sums up this great piece of work. It features locations in the world wherein discoveries in science, math, and technology were made. Lest someone say that these discoveries are mere things of the past, the book also features places where more recent discoveries occurred and locations where significant studies are currently happening as well.

To give you a bit of a teaser, how would you like to visit these places?

-Bletchley Park in the UK, where the Enigma code was broken
-The Alan Turing Memorial in Manchester, England
-The Horn Antenna in New Jersey, where the Big Bang theory was confirmed
-The National Cryptologic Museum in Fort Meade, Maryland
-The Trinity Test Site in New Mexico, where the first atomic bomb was exploded
-The Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, California

I don’t know about you, but I AM SOLD. Get a copy at Amazon for less than $20.

Today is the start of my 5-day vacation at the beach. I have been planning on this for months and now that I am actually here, it seems a bit surreal. But you know what? I am having the time of my life. I just realized something though? I seem to be doing things a bit differently from the rest of the people here are doing. Here are some of my observations.

One, the first thing that I did when I was done checking in was to see the farthest that the WiFi signal would reach. Obviously, I figured it out pretty quickly as I am online now and posting, right?

Two, my Tweeter has been busy since I left early this morning for the airport. Sometimes I used my phone, sometimes I used my netbook. But from the airport to the ferry boat, I have been Tweeting the hours away.

Three, I actually found myself a nifty gadget, a USB modem that allows me to connect to the Internet wherever I may be, as long as there is a mobile phone signal. I got it because I know how WiFi availability is so unreliable outside the city and the prospect of having no Internet for a full work week was just too unpleasant.

Four, my camera has been used a lot - and it’s the just the first day! Now you may say that this is not unusual, right? I have to say, though, the main thought in my mind as I take pictures is how nice they would look in my blog….

Enough said. And I guess that’s what geeks do while on vacation. What do you do?
