How many thumb drives have you bought so far? I’ve got a couple of them and I would say that this tiny portable storage devices definitely come in handy for bringing along important files wherever I go. The problem is most thumb drives come with a transfer speed of around 480/mbps. And that could be [...]

We don’t tend to cover PCs in depth at Forever Geek, but when something like the SHIFT comes along, it’s worth taking note.
Take a look at this beast. Pretty beautiful isn’t it? (I have to assume that you enjoy gear pr0n, of course)
Not only that, but it has a heck of a lot of power [...]

Halloween Robot: The Rovin’ Pumpkin

What more do you need for a simple, (slightly) scary robot this Halloween?
Constructed from some simple bits of LEGO, servo motor, LEDs and simple microchip, the Rovin’ Pumpkin isn’t exactly a hit on the dance floor, but with its glowing green eyes and sneaky little movements, it could scare a few trick or treaters this [...]

I’m not a huge fan of coffee vending machines, but that’s usually because they “brew” such atrocious sludge that’s barely worth drinking for the caffeine hit. Give me a professionally trained barista or, if I’m at home, a small but perfectly formed coffee machine and I’m set.

Having said that, this concept coffee machine does look [...]

TwitterPeek for the Tweet Geek

Can you believe it? Are we users so addicted to Twitter, tweets, twittering and retweets enough for an electronics manufacturer to  consider releasing a Twitter stand-alone device?  Believe it or not but it’s true, the TwitterPeek gadget was made for the sole purpose of doing all your Twitter activities.

PETMAN: Slightly freaky walking robot prototype

I love the advancement of robotics to produce machines that approach humanlike movement. The PETMAN is a cool creation, but ever so slightly freaky.

I hurt one of my legs last week and I swear I was walking a bit like this robot when it reaches 3.2mph (granted, I couldn’t walk that fast).
PETMAN’s main purpose is [...]

My first computer: Atari 400 8-bit

I really wish I had my old Atari 400 computer to hand. I think it’s still at my parents place, though they might have thrown it out — I can’t remember.
I’m reminiscing about the Atari 400 — my first real computer. As the ad below shows, it was a bit of the poor relation to [...]

12 of the Best Looking Hard Drives

Who says data storage devices have to look dull and boring? Here are twelve external hard drives that make more of a statement than simply how many gigabytes they store.
1. LaCie Starck Desktop/Mobile hard drives

Desgned by Philippe Starck, these cool hard drives (one for the desktop, one for mobile users) look amazing, are made from [...]

Loki: incredible robot design. I want one.

I stumbled across this amazing homemade robot called Loki (named after the Norse god of mischief) last week and had to share it with you.

This four foot tall robot not only looks fantastic but seems to be highly functional, thanks to some nifty systems and programming by its creator, Dave Shinsel.

This hard drive may look fairly secure, being all rugged and fitted with a touchscreen for entering a numerical passcode to unlock the drive, but is it really that secure?
It may well thwart the casual thief who, unable to simply plug it in to a spare USB port and peruse your precious porn stash data [...]

LEGO Mindstorms solves a Sudoku: slow but awesome

This amazing little LEGO Mindstorms robot has been programmed to solve a Sudoku puzzle and to write the missing figures in.

As you might imagine, it’s quite a complex procedure that involves scanning the digits already present and working out which squares are blank.

Check out this little fellow, a “walking machine” (he/she/it doesn’t have a name) designed, built and in ongoing development by Drew.
“Created for entertainment purposes. It is made to dance and entertain people at conventions and parties.”

This is an absolute must-see patent from Sony. Not only is the concept great but the drawing is absolutely priceless.
First, the concept: Sony thinks it can improve your game playing experience if it knows when you smile or laugh at something on screen.
It will do this by tracking bodily gestures and sounds via a camera [...]

Should Firefox add multitouch support?

There’s an interesting set of diagrams and discussion over at the Mozilla Wiki about adding multitouch and gesturing to Firefox.

It doesn’t mention what this is in response to — Apple MacBook multitouch trackpad, perhaps, or the increasing number of mobile devices with touchscreens — but of course it is dependent on associated hardware to work [...]

Here’s a pretty cool evolution of the standard computer keyboard, using flexible membranes printed with resistive carbon ink that react to changes in applied pressure due to more contact being made by the keys above.

Take a robot pitcher, constructed with a mechanical arm and a high-speed, three-fingered hand that can open and close at up to 10 times per second, and a robot batter with 1,000fps cameras, and you have the beginnings of a cyber-baseball team.
Here’s a video including slow-motion replay:
