Earlier in the year, we posted about the Benq GP1, an ultraportable LED projector which came out in the market this June. I actually have this projector (thanks to Benq), and I must say I’ve found it very useful when going to clients’ offices for presentations. It’s lightweight, quite bright, and simple enough to use. It’s also a great addition to my home theater system.

Benq has recently tipped Forever Geek that it has lowered the price of the normally $499 Benq GP1 to $399. You can purchase the projector from the Benq online store. Use promo code earlyblkfriday to avail of the discount.

The Benq GP1 features a 100 ANSI Lumens, built-in USB reader (for movies and music), and an optional iPod dock accessory. Remember that this is a LED projector, which means 100 ANSI Lumens is very bright!

Full review to come soon …

How many thumb drives have you bought so far? I’ve got a couple of them and I would say that this tiny portable storage devices definitely come in handy for bringing along important files wherever I go. The problem is most thumb drives come with a transfer speed of around 480/mbps. And that could be slow especially when transferring around 4GB of data.

Enter SuperTalent’s RAIDDrive – a USB 3.0 powered thumb drive which brags of up a nominal 4.8GB/s transfer speed. 4.8GB/s? So now we’re talking. What’s cool about this thumb drive is that you can still plug into USB 2.0 ports and it works like your ordinary USB thumb drive with the same transfe speed as USB 2.0 drives.

But when you plug it into a proper USB 3.0, that’s when the transfer speed comes in.

The SuperTalent RAIDDrive is available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities. It utilizes a “multiple pairs of differential serial data lines technology.” In non-geek term it simply means that the technology it employs boost the performance of the thumb drive significantly.

The SuperTalent RAIDDrive is scheduled for a December release. Pricing info is currently unavailable.

Take a look at this beast. Pretty beautiful isn’t it? (I have to assume that you enjoy gear pr0n, of course)

Not only that, but it has a heck of a lot of power under the hood, utilising Intel’s new Core i7 processors and either an Intel Kingsberg P55 Extreme or EVGA X58 SLI Classified motherboard.

Cram it full of storage (up to six hard drives or 12 SSDs), your choice of graphics and sound cards, and up to 12GB of RAM and you’re set for a powerful computing experience.

Cooling is vital, and the SHIFT features bottom to top airflow, liquid cooling and 90-degree rotation of the motherboard.

There’s even personal support from the person who built each machine, should something go wrong.

Forget tacky plastic: SHIFT features an aluminium skin and steel skeleton, and goes for the classy, minimalist look.

Prices start at $2,199 for the SHIFT Intel P55 and $2,599 for the SHIFT Intel X58.

I’m not a huge fan of coffee vending machines, but that’s usually because they “brew” such atrocious sludge that’s barely worth drinking for the caffeine hit. Give me a professionally trained barista or, if I’m at home, a small but perfectly formed coffee machine and I’m set.

Having said that, this concept coffee machine does look interesting. The BeMoved machine has got the Douwe Egberts brand name on it, so it can’t be all that bad… can it?

The most important aspect of getting your coffee is getting it just right, and the large touchscreen’s primary purpose is to offer a range of options which make choosing style and ingredients easy.

While that coffee is brewing, the screen can also be used to check news, weather, sports and so on. Just don’t hold up the queue.

Apparently the concept was devised because “people wanted more interaction with their beverages”. I’m not sure about that — at least I love interacting with my freshly brewed coffee but only inasmuch as I quaff a cup or two of it every morning.

Can you believe it? Are we users so addicted to Twitter, tweets, twittering and retweets enough for an electronics manufacturer to consider releasing a Twitter stand-alone device? Believe it or not but it’s true, the TwitterPeek gadget was made for the sole purpose of doing all your Twitter activities.Even more interesting is the fact that TwitterPeek is not yet officially announced by the manufacturer and yet it is already listed at Amazon for $199.

Details about TwitterPeek are pretty interesting:

World’s first Twitter mobile device

Unlimited tweets and direct messages

Nationwide coverage. No wifi signal necessary

Includes service for lifetime of device

No contracts or hidden fees

“Always on” instant tweet delivery

Full QWERTY keyboard, large color screen, click scroll wheel

Long battery life lasts up to 4 days

Obviously TwitterPeek wants to challenge smartphones and other mobile devices in offering a gadget where you can stay connected on Twitter, tweet and reply on the go and without the hassles and costs of maintaining a mobile phone or mobile internet device.

But the question is – does the price justifies what TwitterPeek can actually do?

PETMAN’s main purpose is to test chemical protection clothing used by the US Army. It has a range of versatile movements, being able to balance itself when pushed, walking, crawling and “doing a variety of suit-stressing calisthenics”.

It will take two-and-a-half years of design, build and installation before PETMAN is delivered in 2011.

I really wish I had my old Atari 400 computer to hand. I think it’s still at my parents place, though they might have thrown it out — I can’t remember.

I’m reminiscing about the Atari 400 — my first real computer. As the ad below shows, it was a bit of the poor relation to the Atari 800 – less pricy but less memory.

I’m not sure if that keyboard was supposed to repel spills, but I remember getting quite adept at typing on it.

It certainly had an interesting look to it. Lots of brown colouring and a bit like some sort of console you might find on a spaceship’s flight deck in a cheap movie from the ’70s.

Here’s the manual for the Atari 400/800. Mum has only been given one instruction: “Press the play button”, while the son looks on and wonders when his folks will leave so he can finish that primitive ASCII porn program he started writing yesterday.

Ah, yes, that amazing cassette deck. Unlike the Spectrum, you couldn’t get away with plugging any old player into the computer. No, the Atari 410 was the business.

This poor fellow seems to have a manual for the Disk Operating System II, unaware that it was nigh impossible to use the Atari 400 for that. Time to upgrade to the 800, methinks.

Ahh, Atari 8-bit and 16-bit side by side (well, except for those pesky Commodores sitting in the middle. Who the hell put those there?)

OK here’s one musical use for an old Atari 400 and joystick trigger buttons.

Stick a Dalek on top, we can play Doctor Who on this thing.

Uh, hang on, have you seen the screenshot?

Ahh, I spent many a happy time learning the Atari’s idiosyncratic version of BASIC that missed out some vital bits other 8-bit machines had. INKEY$ anyone? I seem to remember missing that a lot.

Did I tell you about the first program I tried to type in on the Atari 400, without ever pressing Return?

It didn’t work.

Wow, green and orange Chess. You could never put it on the high levels because not only would the computer beat you but it would take about twenty times as long as a human to play each move.

Who says computers have to be fast?

Is it true, or just folklore, that people really bought an Atari computer just to play Star Raiders? I’m doubtful.

Anyhow, there’s a quick nostalgic tour of my beloved Atari 400. Worth all of $20 now I’m sure, but a lot more in memories.

Anyone else have the Atari 400? Are you still running it?

This four foot tall robot not only looks fantastic but seems to be highly functional, thanks to some nifty systems and programming by its creator, Dave Shinsel.

There’s a ton of video over at Dave’s YouTube page which really gives a flavour of what Loki can do.

Loki has remote control and logistics over Wi-Fi, vision processing, speech recognition, indoor pathfinding and basic artificial intelligence.

Lots of data on the web site if you’re inclined to have a go creating your own Loki. Otherwise, just sit back and enjoy the show.

This hard drive may look fairly secure, being all rugged and fitted with a touchscreen for entering a numerical passcode to unlock the drive, but is it really that secure?

It may well thwart the casual thief who, unable to simply plug it in to a spare USB port and peruse your precious <strike>porn stash</strike> data like it were a thumb drive, but anyone who really wants to get at your data probably isn’t going to have much trouble.

Adam left a comment on the original blog post, suggesting that the way the drive is constructed makes it highly likely that the AES key is stored on a non-volatile memory chip on the circuit board.

This could well be desoldered and read in order to discover the code and hence grab the data.

Everyday consumers may well be lulled into a false sense of security, while geeks with other geeks for friends (or, indeed, enemies) will probably steer well clear of the device in the first place.

Adam also maintains that most people won’t be able to remember an 18-digit numerical code (apart from Pi, perhaps, which could well be the geeky version of using “1234” as a PIN), though the unit does include the alpha equivalents (much like a phone keypad) so you could spell out a word or phrase instead.

I think true physical security of external hard drives is more important. The Data Locker drive, which comes in 160GB, 320GB and 500GB capacities, does have a self-destruct mode if it detects a brute-force attack — however that pretty much means you’ll need another hard drive to back this one up, in case your data is destroyed by meddlesome fingers.

If you want one you can get it here.

As you might imagine, it’s quite a complex procedure that involves scanning the digits already present and working out which squares are blank.

Processing the scanned image requires setting a threshold value to remove noise, segmenting to work out which marks are part of the digit, thinning to one pixel wide and then checking the features to find out what the digit is.

Solving the Sudoku puzzle is the relatively easy bit, though the Mindstorm processor is slow and doesn’t allow recursive functions, so took some time to optimize.

Then comes the time to write in all those digits, column by column. The whole process is very slow, for all sorts of reasons, and it won’t be beating a human Sudoku champion any time soon (even if it solved the puzzle more quickly), but that’s not the point. This is a trés cool application.

“Created for entertainment purposes. It is made to dance and entertain people at conventions and parties.”

It’s a radially symmetrical four-legged robot that’s operated from two modified Wii Nunchucks. It has taken two years of “hobby” time to get to this point and probably cost around $1,000 in parts/replacements.

It’s made from some custom-cut steel plate, copper, aluminum tubing, brass, a 7.4V 1100mAh lithium-polymer battery, a pair of XBee radio modules for communication (has a range of around 20 feet), Pololu micro SSC board and eight HX12K servos.

Check out the video below or Drew’s Flickr photo set.

I’d kind of hoped that the robot had some of its own sensors on board so that it would avoid objects, but to be honest the level of control Drew has over it makes up for that. Next project perhaps?

Not only is the concept great but the drawing is absolutely priceless.

First, the concept: Sony thinks it can improve your game playing experience if it knows when you smile or laugh at something on screen.

It will do this by tracking bodily gestures and sounds via a camera and microphone connected up to a PlayStation 3, and may well handle other emotions as well.

These could be used as controllers for a game, or possibly extended to give some “Big Brother” feedback if you’re watching a film or TV programme.

I suppose there are many possibilities.

But now we come to the patent drawing itself. As well as a rather boring flowchart, we have this great diagram that makes me wonder just what went through the mind of the designer when he/she was drawing it. I guess most patents are fairly mundane affairs, and this was the only way to spice up an otherwise boring day.

Now, has anyone invented that machine?

There’s an interesting set of diagrams and discussion over at the Mozilla Wiki about adding multitouch and gesturing to Firefox.

It doesn’t mention what this is in response to — Apple MacBook multitouch trackpad, perhaps, or the increasing number of mobile devices with touchscreens — but of course it is dependent on associated hardware to work correctly.

A device that could input touch data for two or more fingers could integrate with Firefox and allow for a number of commands to be executed without either mouse or keyboard shortcut input (though these could perhaps be used as modifiers).

What I really like is the “create new gesture” that would allow users to add their own commands — gesture macros if you like — which would execute based on a specific set of touch inputs.

This is something that’s not really been well explored on mainstream devices. Even the iPhone has a relatively small set of gestures in the main user interface, though individual apps could always add to this.

Having this in Firefox is all very well. Now how about it rolled out across the operating system. Both Apple and Microsoft are totally capable of doing this.

How about support for gesture input on other surfaces, like this really cool video on scratch input:

At present the pitcher can only throw fast balls (well, 25mph balls), but researchers want to get it up to 93mph and vary the types of ball it can deliver.

The batter will be trained to consistently hit balls to the same target.

First, I want to say that I am not an artist, and my drawing talents are really very weak, but I enjoyed being able to use a drawing tablet on more than one occassion since receiving it.

The Adesso Z12 is a twelve inch by ten inch tablet with a ten inch by six and a quarter inch drawing area. The whole unit is very lightweight, and I found it to have a very solid build quality, especially for how thin it is.

While I probably won’t use over half of the features it includes, the Z12 has 1024 level pressure sensitivity and 2000 LPI resolution with twenty-eight programmable hot keys.

The Z12 comes with a software package for Windows XP and Vista users, but installing it on my Windows 7 computer was easy. I plugged it in via USB, and immediately it started working. Of course the hot keys weren’t functioning, but it was easy enough to install the drivers that came with the package.

Other items in the package included the stylus pen, AAA size battery for the pen, two extra pen tips, a solid rubber pen holder, and various disks including drivers, Adesso’s own software, and a copy Corel’s Ulead PhotoImpact 12 SE.

I decided to use Paint.NET, a free drawing application. The tablet worked well. It took me some time to get used to how a tablet functions as it is very different from a mouse. When I picked up the stylus from the tablet, and moved it to the right or left, and placed it back down, it was though I was drawing on a paper, and so the drawing would start in a new area, rather than where I “left” the mouse cursor. There was also a disconnect for me, as I continued to look down at my position, only to not have any real information without looking at what I was doing on the screen. I think this would change after some use, but for me, it was a strange feeling.

There is a toggle button on the pen that allowed me to stop it from drawing, so I could keep my strokes fairly consistent. I found the reaction time of the tablet to be amazing, and it didn’t show any signs of lagging behind or having any issues with my rapid strokes. I tried a few times to throw it off without issue.

I was also worried about the amount of pressure I could put on the pen. I have a fairly light touch when it comes to writing and drawing because I am left handed, and get annoyed when pencil or pen ink smears on the page. I wasn’t worrying about this with the tablet, and found myself having to remember to push a little harder than I am used to to create thicker lines. This pressure difference though makes controlling the thinness and thickness of lines much easier.

If you can draw, design, or otherwise create art, this tablet is a must have. If you enjoy taking notes by hand, or love to mock-up user interface sketches, this tablet is also a great accessory to have.

While I’ve only tried and tested a few other tablets before, I find myself being very impressed with the versatility, build quality and overall simplicity of this tablet. I wouldn’t go so far as to say the sensitivity and precision beats competition, but it is definitely equivalent. If you are interested in the Z12, it currently retails for $129.99.

Other products in the Adesso tablet line include: CyberTablet M14, with a larger drawing area, the CyberPad A4, made for handwritten note taking on the go, the CyberTablet 12000, a tablet that can also be portable, the CyberTablet 6400, a smaller tablet, and the CyberTablet M17, a 17″ LCD Graphic Tablet monitor.

When I heard that Sony was going to remove PS2 backwards compatibility on future Playstation 3 units, I decided that I was going to track down a unit that still had the Emotion Engine installed on it. I still have some PS2 games that I want to play and I wanted the option to play it on the PS3. Even though software emulated backwards compatibility was also made available on PS3 units released a year ago, I felt that having the actual hardware on my PS3 was the way to go.

Sony’s decision to remove this feature may have been borne out of the desire to save a few more dollars on production costs but I always felt that the company actually lost more because backwards compatibility is a major come-on for established PS2 gamers with an extensive games library to jump on the PS3 bandwagon. But based on a recent patent that Sony Computer Entertainment filed in the US patent Office, Sony may have a way to put backwards compatibility on PS3s once again.

Sony has apparently found a way to translate the instructions from the Emotion Engine into data that can be referenced by the PS3. The figures above are schematics on how the technology will actually work.

So the question is, will we see this new technology in play as a firmware upgrade in the near future?

British satellite broadcaster Sky is ready to welcome Australian friends to the UK with the introduction of an upside-down remote control.

Ahh, I’ve never grown tired of the notion that everyone who lives in Australia stands on their head because it’s on the other side of the world from Britain (not exactly, of course).

It’s all in celebration of The Ashes series which starts next month. Cricket is a sport that both Brits and Aussies understand but the former seldom does particularly well at.

Anyway, back to the remote control unit itself. You’ll notice that Sky hasn’t gone to the effort of rotating the entire design through 180 degrees, or even flipping every button, because some items like the central “play/pause” button have obviously not been fully rotated because of their odd shape.

I’m sure Sky could’ve gone much further with this – maybe sending a new version of the EPG to the set-top box without the user’s permission so that all the programme listings are upside-down as well. Or transmitting the programmes upside-down or played backwards. Yep, I think that’d be really good for business.

There’s no mention of how you can get your hands on one of these funky new RCUs. I bet with a Stanley knife and some glue you could easily make your own version (albeit one that doesn’t work when you reassemble it).

I wonder if the Australian Broadcasting Corporation will consider doing the same.

For those that haven’t quite worked it out, below is what the original Sky+HD remote looks like.

Why not? Everything in black looks good. Take a look at the PlayStation. It is not by accident that the default consoles have always been black. I have to admit, white does have its appeal. Then again, it doesn’t look as bad a** as black.

Anyhow, the ubiquitous white Wii now has a black brother. For the longest time, the clean sparkling white of the Wii was synonymous to group fun. Its sales have reached unprecedented heights as well. Why has Nintendo decided to suddenly change gears?

If sales figures are to be believed, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3 are fast catching up on the Wii. While many fanboys have been predicting this for the longest time (indeed, the PS3 has been called a turtle by a lot of people), Nintendo is not about to take things sitting down. Hence, they have come up with a darker – and hopefully more attractive – version of the Wii console.

For now, only the Japanese market will be able to purchase the black Wii. It is due to be released on the 1st of August. The price tag? They say it’s going to be 250,000 yen or $258. Naturally, the console will not be the sole item in the package. It will come with a black Wii-mote, a black Nunchuk, and a black classic controller pro. A bundled version will also be released, with the game Monster Hunter Tri by Capcom. This bundle will go for $341.

Again, it might be for naught to get excited over this piece of news if you are not in Japan. Then again, that has never stopped us from getting what we wanted in the past, has it?

Enter the TDD-9000 liquid cooling pad from Nexus Technology. It’s a soft velvet blanket filled with a patented gel-like liquid that has been designed to dissipate heat passively and noiselessly.

The company’s CEO, Michael van der Jagt, says that your lap will turn colder within ten seconds of putting the pad on to it. That’s the same effect it’ll have on your overheating notebook PC.

Independent tests found that a laptop rested on a regular surface reached 50?C after 40 minutes, whereas when placed on the cooling pad it reached just 36?C.

The cooling pad can be boosted by lifting it and shaking it every 20 minutes.

It’s arriving in the UK from mid-June, priced £23. Not only is that a pretty decent price but this solution doesn’t require any power from your laptop like many other products do. That means more battery life and performance for your laptop, too.

These are glass speakers with white and blue LEDs, and they can even be supplied with some stands that also have lights built in.

Trouble is, they cost close to $1,000 and yet they only offer 10W of output per channel, which is pretty pathetic.

They might look great, but as far as I’m concerned speakers have to perform. I’d rather have boring speakers that pump than underperforming fancy ones.

Nice try Kenwood but give me something I actually want to play my music through.

Say you’ve got a load of printed photographs that you’ve never scanned in to your computer. Get hold of the Memoir FS80 frame which has a built in scanner.

Yeah, I know most people’s photos now exist almost exclusively in the digital realm, but there’s sure to be a stack of shots gathering dust from back in the days of analog.

The Memoir FS80 with 8-inch display can scan prints up to 15 x 10 cm (about 5 x 4 inches) at 600dpi, has 1GB of internal storage, has a 5-in-1 card reader and USB ports for transferring digital prints to and from the frame, and even an ambient light sensor that adjusts the brightness of backlighting based on the light levels in the room.

It’s available priced around £178 ($220).

I’ve been passing by the Sony outlet store at Prime Outlets for several times now because I saw a lot of items below standard retail rates, discounts of about 15% or more! I held on my Benjamins tightly because I knew something worthwhile would be available this spring… well, it seems like a good idea after all.

The Sony HDR-TG5V is one definitely to crave for. I like how 6-hours of video can fit into this small “toy”. Oh I could almost imagine the comfort of not having to download to my Macbook every time I needed more space. And the comfort of slipping it into my jacket, or even my pant’s sidepockets too. It beats those clunky and huge handicams by several shots.

There is no firm word on pricing yet and I’m not even sure if this would be available at Prime Outlets too (though I’m keeping my fingers crossed for that). There are rumors that it will sell well around the US$1,000 mark.

Anyway, check out the Sony website for more details.

Great, so what does that mean practically? This lightweight 10.1-inch machine has a frameless, scratch-proof LED screen and pebble design keyboard. Not only that, but the case is durable and strong – pretty much a necessity when on the move – and Samsung has even been thoughtful enough to coat the keyboard with an anti-bacterial finish so that all the crud that drops into it during its lifetime won’t breed and then pass on some rare fungal infection or airborne virus to you. Good news.

As for the other tech: it uses an Intel Atom processor, up to five hours of battery life, has internal microphone, webcam, 3-in-1 card reader, three USB ports and optional Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. It’ll have Windows XP Home Edition preloaded as well, but you can soon kick that off if you want.

It’s coming in May to… pretty much everywhere, but the price hasn’t been confirmed yet.
