Inception has made its mark as one of the most thought provoking films ever made in recent history. What surprises me is that Inception’s IP isn’t being milked for what it’s worth. Call it respect for the franchise or something much deeper. I don’t know. Nonetheless, when I read about a card game based on INCEPTION from planet China, I was intrigued. Yes, that’s serious trademark stuff there. But that’s not stopping it from being way epic. The art is amazing. The gameplay — well I really have no idea how it plays but I can surmise that the game has the following components based on the subtexts and captions: Read more »

Andrew Lancaster’s Taxidermy Creations – the Weirdest Things You’ll See This Week
Have you been feeling a little bored lately with all that you find online? Are you up for a little bit of weirdness that might just bring that spark you are seeking from your daily browsing? If so, then I have the perfect set of photos to show you on this gloomy Monday. (I envy those of you who are enjoying the sunshine today.) Andrew Lancaster’s taxidermy creations are out of this world, and I really had to think long and hard if I should write about Lancaster’s work today. Basically, his idea is based on creating hybrids of creatures. He skins, preserves, and stuffs dead animals just like any Read more »
Dog Days – Review
Dog Days is a 13 episode anime produced by Aniplex and Seven Arcs, and aired during the Spring 2011 season. As you can probably guess from the title, Dog Days is an anime that involves dogs, but they’re not your ordinary dogs. The story is about a boy named Cinque who is dragged into the kingdom of Biscotti in the magical world of Fronyaldo. He was summoned by Princess Millhiore in order to act as the kingdom’s saviour in a war against the neighbouring kingdom of Galette. After his arrival, however, Cinque notices something strange: all of the citizens of Biscotti have dog ears and tails. Indeed, the main selling Read more »
Tortoss: Not quite Angry Birds but still sorta fun
Maybe I’m giving them too much credit but if it were not for the fact that Tortoss made it into Adult Swim’s lineup of obscure games, I wouldn’t have bothered. Yes, it’s a rushed version of Angry Birds but I do have to say it kept me entertained for a good 20 rounds. So there’s an apparent secret sub-civilization of tortoises with the bad guys intent on combining the perfect woman-beef patty hybrid. It’s your job as the tortoise warriors to stop these hybrids from being delivered. Just like Angry Birds, you have a full arsenal of tortioses at your disposal. What annoys me greatly is the challenge of not Read more »

Scribblenauts’ Creators Shake Up Shooter Genre
The company behind Scribblenauts — the Nintendo DS game where you solve puzzles by conjuring up any object you can think of — is known for introducing innovative new ways of playing video games. The next genre on 5th Cell‘s list of innovation domination: the third-person shooter. Hybrid is set after an asteroid has wiped out much of Earth’s population. When society breaks down, two factions — Paladins and Variants — rise in prominence and fight for control of the planet. The game pits players in a persistent online world where you become a member of one of these two factions, and shoot it out in 3-on-3 online battles. These battles aren’t intended Read more »
Mythological Characters Deconstructed
I have always been fascinated by mythology and fantasy. Greek, Roman, Norse, Filipino, etc. – various stories and character held me captive as a child. Even as an adult (supposed to be one, at least), I still find the magic that mythology offers irresistible. Now deconstruction may not be the best thing that you can do with mythological characters, but Roberto Osti’s work is perhaps the most interesting thing I have seen this month. Osti’s work spans illustrations, paintings, drawings, and more. It seems that he has studied art all his life, and he also got a degree in Anatomical/Surgical Drawing. (Who knew that such a degree program existed?) This Read more »
A Transformers Game That Won’t Suck?
As a rule, movie tie-in video games are abysmal. Made with too little time and not enough polish, they exist primarily to fleece more money out of the movie-going public, to experience the movie’s story a second time. (Toy Story 3 stands as an exception to this rule, as its game was, by all accounts, rather fantastic.) The first two Transformers games based on Michael Bay’s movies were just awful. But there may be cause to hope over the tie-in for the Transformers: Dark of the Moon game (I’m still hating that title). What’s the cause for this sudden optimism? Unlike the first two games, which were made by TT Read more »
‘Shadow Complex’ Dev Making iPhone/iPad Game
Remember that awesome Xbox Live Arcade game from last summer called Shadow Complex? It was a fantastic shooter that all but redefined the concept of side-scrolling. I was fortunate enough to be given an early preview of the game at Comic-Con last year, and then the good folks at Chair Entertainment, who built the game, even comped me with a review code to download the game. Sadly, the blog I was writing for went under shortly thereafter, and I never got to write my review of Shadow Complex. But it would have been glowing, I tell you. It was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I had all year Read more »
