Digital Delight Or Demise?
DC has now announced their collaboration with Amazon, releasing their stock, including an exclusive 100 graphic novels for release to users of the Kindle Fire. We are told, not to worry, these stories will be available for other Amazon customers eventually, and following that, DC are not sticking just with Amazon, but promising to look at other outlets, such as Barnes and Noble. All major outlets I notice, which is really to be expected. But where does that leave your local comics shop? Now I am personally in a quandary over this. Though I have yet to purchase a Kindle Fire, I adore my eReader. I love how it reduces Read more »
Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v 16
Hot geek threesomes (who’da thunk it?), French kiss (leave Meg Ryan out of this), Microsoft oopsies (not that a Microsoft mistake is newsworthy), Verizon being daft (when are they not?) and Amazon on the warpath (Amazon vs. Netflix will be more interesting than the entire catalog of either company’s on demand video). It’s a steamy week in geek, so let’s get to the good stuff. WIN: Chess, Algebra and Music It’s a triple threat this week! Jonathan W. Stokes, blogger and man clearly gifted with superior intelligence and entirely too much time on his hands, used algebra to turn famous chess games into piano music, which he then turned into Read more »
You Are Not A Gadget
I know I am not a gadget, do you? That statement is actually the title of a book by Jaron Lanier. The full title is “You Are Not A Gadget: A Manifesto.” I haven’t had the chance to read the book, but the reviews I have read make it seem interesting enough for me to try and get my hands on a copy. From what I have read, what Lanier does in his book is to philosophically analyze what we take for granted on a daily basis: online tools and other related technology. An old saying came to mind: “Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who Read more »
New York Times: Amazon Should Tax Shoppers
How often do you shop online? I bet that you won’t be able to survive the way you do now without shopping online. And what is the biggest online store on earth today? It might be open to argument, but Amazon definitely ranks at the top. One of the great things about Amazon is that they do not charge intrastate/interstate taxes. Naturally, consumers love this and end up buying more. If the stand of the New York Times is to be followed, though, everyone might have to pay more than they are paying now. They want Amazon to “spread its wealth” and start charging state taxes. How does it work? Read more »
Amazon Offers Songs At 29p!
When was the last time that you actually bought a CD? How about mp3s? If you have not bought music lately – for whatever reason, I don’t want to know – then here is a piece of news that just might entice you to go online and get a song or two. Read more »
Amazon's got game!
We all know that Amazon’s got downloadable and/or streamed online music and videos on sale, but what we probably missed is knowing that they’ve got video games too. The service is called Amazon Games downloads and right now it has over 600+ video game titles and each for less than US$10! Great eh? Makes me wonder if Yahoo will follow suit by lowering their Yahoo Games… really, at an average of US$29.99, too expensive games Yahoo. Amazon Games Downloads allows you to download the full versions, play it for thirty minutes then decide if you want to keep it. This is nice. I think I can just about know if Read more »
