It’s that time of year again when anime fans from all over Japan get together to decide on the next moe (pronounced mo-eh) queen of the year. If this is your first time hearing of saimoe, it is basically a popularity contest between all of the female characters in every anime that has aired in the past year. Every year the people over at 2ch, a Japanese discussion board, hold a contest called the Anime Saimoe Tournament. The purpose of this tournament is to choose the most moe (pronounced mo-eh) female anime character of the past year. What is “moe” you ask? The term is commonly used in describing cute young girls, sort of like a replacement for “kawaii”, but it could be used to refer to any character that anyone has an interest in. We’re now into the first week of July and that means a new season of anime is coming out. Ignoring sequels and OVAs, the season’s titles can be grouped into three categories. Girls Anime with lots of pretty girls, or one super-pretty girl, have been around for ages and there’s always at least a few in every season.
