Here we are: on the cusp of 2011, waving tearfully at 2010 and wishing it bon voyage, or telling it not to let the door hit it in the arse…depending on the kind of year you’ve had. And here we are wrapping up another week in geek, just in time to gather with friends and family and partake in the yearly Twilight Zone marathon drinking game (one shot every time Roddy McDowall looks constipated, two shots every time someone jumps out a window, chug a pint whenever a tiny robot intimidates an old lady). No more time to waste, so let’s cut straight to action. WIN: Solar Pants While also Read more »

Is Apple iPhone losing its app advantage?
When Apple opened up the iPhone to developers and launched the App Store, it was a wake up call, and set a benchmark for other mobile phone manufacturers to aspire to. Yes, it’s a much more closed system than the likes of Android, for example, but an iPhone user’s experience of purchasing apps via iTunes, either from the phone or on a Mac or PC, has still been much better than many other systems. What has let the side down is the quality of apps available in the Store, made worse by the sheer quantity of them. New analysis from the Facebook mobile app store Mplayit has found that consumers Read more »
iPhone Pilot: Strap on some cardboard wings and let's fly!
Parrot’s forthcoming AR.Drone is an amazing use of the iPhone as a remote control for a model airplane, but if you can’t wait that long or have just 99c to invest in some silliness, take a look at iPhone Pilot First, buy and download the app, then go to the website and pick up one or more pairs of free wings that you can print onto cardboard and then stick to your iPhone. Finally, start up the app and then swoop, shoot and bomb your way around your house and neighbourhood. It’s truly daft, as you can see from these videos. A high-tech executive stress reliever. You’ll have to provide Read more »
Nokia UK announces Calling All Innovators winning mobile app developers
Nokia has revealed the winners of its latest Calling All Innovators contest to find a range of innovative new applications for its Ovi Store. The overall winner was the woZZon search engine application that gives access to a 60,000-strong database of geocoded venues and 90,000 unique events. When used with Ovi Maps, it makes it easy to find local events, whether they’re huge stadium gigs or small, local shows. The winning company wins £20,000, a place in the Ovi Store, plus ticket and travel to a Nokia developer event in Spring 2010 and one year’s membership to Forum Nokia Launchpad. Runner-up apps were Little Spender, which tracks spending behaviour; Live Read more »
MSN on iPhone? Use a generic IM app and keep Microsoft off your handset!
I hold my hands up and admit it: I don’t keep Microsoft software on my Mac. I succumbed for a short while and used a crappy outdated version of Microsoft Office on an old iBook I’d inherited, but other than that I’m MS free. I’m glad Microsoft shunned the Mac when it comes to browsers — the last version of Internet Explorer I used on a Mac was so appalling it made me cry. Depending on what mood I’m in when people send me Excel and Word documents, I’ll either tell them to send a PDF or I’ll just open it up in Google Docs. My Mac has no trace Read more »
iPhone worm maker lands app development job
Ashley Towns, the hacker who developed the Ikee worm which infected / rickrolled a number of unlocked iPhones, has got himself a job with iPhone application developer Mogeneration. Security firm Sophos has reacted negatively to the news, suggesting that it glamorises the writing of potentially malicious code (despite the fact that this worm, in particular, wasn’t malicious) and arguing that there are probably more talented, law-abiding coders who could have been given the job. There are a number of issues here. Firstly, anyone who jailbreaks their iPhone is opening themselves up to a greater risk of malware and other undesired software, particularly if they don’t bother to do basic housekeeping Read more »
