Awesome Buildings at the World Architecture Festival

Architecture geeks, this post is for all of you. You have probably heard of the World Architecture Festival, an event which is held yearly to celebrate the world’s greatest buildings. Some of them are already completed, while others are in the planning stages. One thing is for sure: the entries are breathtaking. Some of them even have this out of this world look.

This year, the World Architecture Festival is going to be held in Barcelona, Spain. There are more than 700 entries coming from 59 countries. Obviously, we can’t feature all of them here, but take a look at some of the most eye catching man-made creations that have made it to the World Architecture Festival.

This building complex is a project planned in the city of Kolkota, India. The idea is to provide a revolutionary type of housing for the residents of the city. Of course, culture is not disregarded, with the housing units being provisioned for multi-generational households. What is truly exceptional about the planned complex is the overall design.

These images may only be concepts for now, but when the buildings are fully constructed, they will truly be breathtaking.

Taipei Nangang Office Tower

The Taipei Nangang Office Tower is also a concept for now, but knowing the propensity of the Taiwanese for groundbreaking edifices, it is very likely that the tower will be built. This shell-like building draws inspiration from river pebbles and the entire design is aimed to provide an efficient yet healthy and inspiring work place.

A House Awaiting Death

The name of the house alone will get the attention of anyone – and it certainly did get mine! At first I was thinking that the house was/is awaiting death, but apparently, the owner of the house believes he will die in 15 years and that he wants to await his death in this house.

In any case, given the unique style of the house and the magnificent view of the sea, I suppose even I wouldn’t mind awaiting death in this house. The house is located in the Mie Prefecture in Japan.

NLF Bursa

The NLF Bursa is located in the Nilüfer district of Bursa and is a luxury high rise residential project. I have no freakin’ idea how this building can be solid and safe with this design, but what do I know? It does look impressive, though.

The Most Creative Way to Recycle an Old Boeing 747

Where do airplanes go when they die? Do they have airplane heaven to look forward to? While most airplanes are dismantled and the separate parts are dealt with accordingly (scrap metal shops, recycling, etc.), here’s one airplane that has been re-purposed and turned into a house. Definitely not the kind of house you see everyday.

Take another look at that, and tell me that it isn’t a beauty!

The house uses parts of a decommissioned Boeing 747, with the guys of David Hertz Architects being the masterminds of the project. The house is located in Malibu, already one of the most strategic places in the area – strategic in terms of building to get some of the most stunning views. Of course, people who build in that area also have high standards to meet – that of having the most stunning house, the most unique house, or whatever “the most” you can think about. I guess that in the case of the “Wing House”, the owner has definitely reached those standards.

In building the main house, the fuselage, the wings, and the cockpit of the 707 were used. In true glam style, the “house” is not made of one single structure. There are also other structures which make use of the plane parts – guest quarters, a meditation pavilion, a barn, and an art studio.

The house is not all about style, though. It is also environment-friendly, utilizing solar power, natural ventilation, etc.

It’s a really cool house – there is no denying that, but here’s a question for you: Does this mean that the owner of this house doesn’t have to pay for an airplane ticket to become a member of the mile-high club?

I admit it, that title could be influenced by the early Friday morning whiskey after the iPad Bling, but still it is the first thing this abso-frakkin-lutely gorgeous house made me think of.

I bet I need to find some more Spongebob references for this post but to be honest, sometimes it’s just better when I shut up and let you enjoy the beauty of this Nautilius Shell house.

The house was built in 2006 by Arquitectura Orgánica for a couple from Mexico City, with two kids. Apparently they wanted to feel one with nature and live more in harmony, integrated in nature.
Whatever they were on, I want double!

I know this is old stuff, but hey give boy a ~~whiskey~~ break and go admire some more pictures of this house. And yes, I categorise this as Sci-fi. How’s that.

555Kubik has released a documentary around the theme “How would it be if a house was dreaming?”

The conception of this project consistently derives from its underlying architecture – the theoretic conception and visual pattern of the Hamburg Kunsthalle. The Basic idea of narration was to dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O. M. Ungers “Galerie der Gegenwart”. Resultant permeabilty of the solid facade uncovers different interpretations of conception, geometry and aesthetics expressed through graphics and movement. A situation of reflexivity evolves – describing the constitution and spacious perception of this location by means of the building itself.
