Dutch designer Tomáš Gabzdil Libertiny created a sculpture of Jesus as martyred Christ ricing form chaos. The sculpture is made of a laser sintered framework. The sculpture was then placed in a case made of glass sheets on top of two wooden beehives which grants worker bees access to the sculpture.

About 40.000 worker bees then created a honeycomb skin over the sculpture and filled each cell with honey they produce. Then they removed the honey from the honeycomb to their beehive beneath the glass case.

The concept is pretty unique, using insects and nature to create art. Although I do wonder how they took care of the bees after the artwork was done. I suppose the beehives where built so that once the bees returned to it with their honey they could be moved back into the nature.

But as cool as this sculpture is it made me think about Candyman, the horror movie from ’92.

Watch the video of the bees working on the sculpture to get the full effect of this art piece.

It is due that 18 years later since the making of Candyman that horror movies have gotten really more horror then back then, otherwise this would be an unpleasant resemblance. But a movie like Candyman has last it’s horror genre status one could say.

But all joking and comments aside, this Bee Man sculpture goes into the books as awesome and unique.

The internet never bores, every week I discover something amazing I wouldn’t know about otherwise. This week it is the artwork of Peter Callesen who creates paper figures from a single A4 sheet. He only uses a plain A4 white paper, something to cut it and glue. Some of the pieces are so incredible detailed you have to admire his talent and patience to create them. Notice the detail of the skeletons face end how meticulous the the ribs are done?

The internet never bores, every week I discover something amazing I wouldn’t know about otherwise. This week it is the artwork of Peter Callesen who creates paper figures from a single A4 sheet. He only uses a plain A4 white paper, something to cut it and glue. Some of the pieces are so incredible detailed you have to admire his talent and patience to create them.

Notice the detail of the skeletons face end how meticulous the the ribs are done? And this is one of the more “simple” pieces.

I find the A4 sheet of paper interesting to work with, because it is probably the most common and consumed media and format for carrying information today, and in that sense it is something very loaded. This means that we rarely notice the actual materiality of the A4 paper. By removing all the information and starting from scratch using the blank white 80gsm A4 paper as a base for my creations, I feel that I have found a material which we all are able to relate to, and at the same time is non-loaded and neutral and therefore easier to fill with different meanings. The thin white paper also gives the paper sculptures a fragility which underlines the tragic and romantic theme of the works.

I can’t even cut an A4 sheet of paper in a strait line, let alone to create something with it. Not only Callesen’s skill is amazing but his creativity. It’s like making a sculpture out of bronze, you only have one item to craft and rely completely on use of shadows, relief and texture.

The above piece, “Resurrection”, is a good example of using relief and textures to an optimum. And other pieces are so precise and anatomically correct it just doesn’t cease to amaze.

Check out more of Peter Callesen’s A4 papercuts. He has created several different art objects from these A4 papercuts, to large framed papercuts and ice sculptures.

Michelangelo was 23 years old at that time. This masterpiece can be viewed in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City. The sculpture was named La Pietà, which means “pity”.

Five-hundred and eleven years later Polish artist Kordian Lewandowski takes inspiration from La Pietà and merges Renaissance art with the modern day video game culture. Kordian’s sculpture portrays Princess Peach holding a dying Mario. He aptly named his masterpiece “Game Over”.

This sculpture was carved out of a polystyrene foam block and sculpted up to details.

I’m not a video gamer, but one console I did own was the 8-bit NES with Super Mario Bros. game. I got the console when I was around six years old and played with it till it broke. Mario Bros. is for me video gaming. I still remember the game tunes in my head and always kept a favoritism for retro games that are pixelated. I can imagine any true Nintendo fan boy/girl would love to view this sculpture in real.

While La Pietà is based on a religious icon, it still is a masterpiece done by one of the biggest artist to have lived on earth. And Kordian’s piece reminded me that we live in a age where everything revolves around technology and the old art form is slowing dying out. Now a days we appreciate the art of an iPhone design or the new iPad, I never anymore come across a recent painting or sculpture that has potential to survive centuries.

When I walk by art galleries I wonder why I never save money for a nice painting instead of only saving to buy technology that won’t last more then three years. Artists should take “Game Over” as an inspiration and start creating paintings and sculptures that are classic and yet depict our modern day culture.
